When four women in their forties meet – two divorced, one widowed, the other dumped—and go to lunch, I figured the sparks would fly, though not so much at each other. From that segment on, I curled up in my chair and prepared to be wholly entertained. On that front, Romes did not disappoint. The dialogues she scripted between Elaina, Tawny, Steph, and Grace as they aired their stories relative to the men that had been in their lives was clever, witty, and moving.

The poignancy embedded in this quirky, funny story came to light when three of the ladies moved into Elaina’s house. At that point, I expected that comfort zones would be stretched and bad habits revealed; they would be rubbing off each other’s rough edges. The author did a marvelous job in showcasing the human aspects in these friends, their relationship with each other.

The gems in this story, however, came to light through Romes’ skillful insertions of the ladies’ personal revelations that were often triggered by remarks to each other that seemed careless, unkind. As much as I enjoyed the comedic quips and antics interspersed throughout the story, it was the raw honesty that ensued from hurtful encounters with each other that moved me. Another aspect of the story with which I resonated dealt with those segments involving a character’s self-reflective thoughts; they were insightfully written.

To add a flair of romance to her story, Romes created some well-grounded men. I enjoyed the balance she crafted between the ladies’ hesitations regarding dating and their emerging confidence. Be prepared to laugh uproariously, openly commiserate, and revel aloud from beginning to end.

No Sweat Pants Allowed - Wine Club by Jan Romes

Elaina Samuels, divorced and newly single meets three women (Tawny Westerfield, Stephanie Mathews, and Grace Cordray), at a cash-for-gold event. They soon become friends and stare the "No Sweat Pants Allowed - Wine Club".

All four women are "man free" and trying to get on with their lives and find true happiness. They are all very likable in their own way. Each one is flawed in and trying to cope with their "single" status.

The ladies all have different personalities and approaches on life events, which makes them real. Despite their differences they become good friends and are there for each other through good and bad times.

Masterfully written each character is well developed and have real life problems. There are laugh out loud moments, self discovery, conflict, love and friendship. Watching the ladies interact was enjoyable, I felt as if I were part of the group. I could relate to what each woman was going through. Grab a glass of your favorite wine and curl up with a fantastic read!

This book just wasn't for me. I picked it up hoping for a light and funny read as a break from my usual crime/mystery novels. I also picked it because I like books that have more mature characters and the women in this book were between 40 -47 years of age. Now, I don't like giving negative reviews, but this book was a true struggle to finish and did not hold my interest at all!

The basic plot is four women with varying relationship woes, meet and decide to move in together. Normally, with this type of book you would say they met, became friends, and moved in together. But, it was like the book skipped an entire step and they went from meeting to moving in together in what seemed like 1 - 2 weeks! For me this book went into the unbelievable, not in a million years realm from the first couple of chapters. The book begins with the main character encountering a crying women at a place where you can sell your old gold (wouldn't have been my choice for a meeting location, but ok). Two other women join in and try to help the crying woman and they all leave the gold exchange place and go have drinks together...WHAT?? Seriously, does this even sound plausible? Four complete strangers decide to grab drinks and share their relationship histories after a brief encounter that lasted minutes? On pg. 17 of the book they are already referring to themselves as the four musketeers! This while they are at the bar having just met maybe an hour ago.

I can't even wrap my mind around this, but I kept reading. Then they moved in together after forming a wine club, which appeared to only have one meeting before they moved in together and which seemed to have occurred only a couple of weeks after they met. Who invites 4 strangers that you met a week ago to live in your home? Did I mention that these women are supposed to be in their 40's, each and everyone of them? I can't imagine anyone in their 40's making this type of decision.

These women acted as if they were maybe, MAYBE 21 and in saying that I feel like I'm insulting 21 year olds! For instance, they go out to dinner and see one of their exes and they ask the waitress to do something to his food in order to get back at him and the waitress agrees...sigh! Not only that, but another restaurant scene later in the book, one of their son's takes an interest in the same waitress and asks her and another waitress to join them at their table for dinner....and the waitresses do! I'm stunned! How can a waitress who is clearly on duty and actually taking orders one moment, just sit down and join a table for dinner? UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE!!

I'm almost done with my rant. I actually highlighted various parts of this book just so that I could include them in this review, lol. Here is one line that I can't imagine a 4o something woman saying:

"I didn't mean to get up in your grill, Steph."

Last thing, they decide to get revenge on another ex by essentially attempting to vandalize his property in the middle of the night with a get-away driver...have I mentioned that these women are 40+!!

The book was just so unbelievable and so childish that it just fell really flat. Based on the other reviews some people loved this book, but it just didn't work for me.

No Sweat Pants Allowed – Wine Club was a quick, fun, and relatable read. Four women in their forties, who are all single for different reasons, meet one another on the same day and form a bond — and a club. Not too much time passes before they’re all living together in divorcée-to-be Elaina’s very large house.

Although Elaina, Steph, Tawny, and Grace find much in common and have lots of uproarious fun, but put any four women together and differences, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings are likely to surface.

Jan Romes writes in a quick, witty, and snappy style that gives the reader a lot to smile about. With four women who are all very interested in men, but for their own reasons, not ready to dive into a relationship, the bonds as well as the conflicts are powerful and identifiable.

I really enjoyed the read and am happy to hear the author is planning a sequel.

If you are in the mood for some fun, light-hearted reading, then Jan Rome’s ‘No Sweat Pants Allowed – Wine Club’ is just the ticket. It’s the first book in this popular series.

The ‘girlie’ bond that develops between Elaina, Tawny, Grace and Steph and the acerbic wit they share are synonymous with the chic lit genre, though here the female friends are a more mature group who, in their forties, suddenly find themselves alone and abandoned; Grace is recently widowed and the others victims of failed relationships. Despite their misfortunes, they still retain a healthy interest in men, but each is wary of rushing into a new relationship.
Drawn together by a common thread, their chance meeting swiftly evolves into a close friendship and Elaina makes a hasty decision to let them move into her spacious home. It is here that the No Sweat Pants Allowed wine club is conceived.

As they lick their wounds and struggle to move on with their lives, living in such close proximity makes it inevitable that tensions will arise. Jan Romes deals with the complexities of hurt feelings, bruised self-esteem and misunderstandings in an insightful way that will resonate with many readers, especially those who understand how it feels to suffer loss and rejection.

The wit and funny incidents are uplifting and the men they encounter a pleasing contrast to the exes who have wreaked havoc in their lives. The introduction of Stoney, Tawny’s beloved dog, adds a heart-warming touch to the story. It was interesting to see how Elaina would cope with all the disruption he caused in her meticulously tidy palatial pad.

Jan Romes writes in a lively style and tempers the real life situations in this story with a blend of humour that makes for a fun, relaxing read. I look forward to sampling more of her work. 5*

No Sweat Pants Allowed - Wine Club (Wine and Sweat Pants Series Book 1) had languished too long in the depths of my kindle and I’m delighted I finally decided to read it. Author Jan Romes has written a witty and snappy tale of 4 ladies, 1 dog, 1 cat, and various gentlemen. As Elaina the instigator of the Wine Club is fond of saying, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Welcome to the big top!

Elaina, Steph, Tawny and Grace meet each other for the first time at a cash for gold event because they each have some rings to sell. All in their 40’s, they learn that they are all coping -with divorce, being dumped, and sadly a death. They regroup at a nearby bar and console themselves with wine. The author gives us some fun reading as the ladies get to know each other while they share spicy banter and a few tears. They realize that starting over at 40 makes them feel like they are teenagers again. “They were still dealing with body image, jobs, eating disorders and guys.” They decide to join forces and they vow to deal with their lives by ditching their sweat pants as they focus on being their best selves.

Soon Elaina, who is living along in a large and opulent house invites her new friends to move in. “Four women living together. What could go wrong?” Send in the clowns! Through sharing and caring by the pool with wine, or in the hot tub with wine, or eating out with wine they begin to move forward. Or do they?

This book feature entertaining escapades and I’m sure many women will laugh and cry along with the wine club gals. Each of the four has a vibrant and colorful personality. Turns out there are now five books in the series! I no longer drink alcohol, but I raise my glass of sparkling water to these brave women and their wine club.

We need people in this world; we are not designed to function in isolation. And this is truer at certain times more than others. And sometimes were need to be with our same sex friends. As much as I like women; there are times when I need to be with the guys.
Books, even light fiction, speak to our various needs in this world. In No Sweatpants Allowed, Jan Romes has crafted a book about four women who find each other – over wine – after the loss of major relationships: three breakups and one death.
While the tone varies throughout the book; the prose is fun and breezy. Their connection with each other deepens and, like wine, becomes more complex. Elaina, Tawny, Stephanie, and Grace are engaging characters in this first book of three in the series. You could do worse than to settle in and enjoy their company for a few hours.
Jan Romes is a dedicated and prolific author. If you enjoy her work there are plenty more of here books to explore.
Highly recommended as a light escape over a glass of Merlot.

No Sweat Pants Allowed
WINE CLUB

Jan Romes

Review by Author Roy Murry

Putting two women into a conspiracy against men would raise hell. In WINE CLUB, Ms. Romes has interwoven the stories of four women and their personalities, living under one roof, into a play of disasters and triumphs.

These women, led by wealthy Elaina, owner of a large house they all move into, come together because of marital problems, i.e., divorces. How each marriage ended brings up various questions as to why they lived with those men in the first place.

The solutions to the ladies' endeavors evolve into conflicts between themselves. Some are sad, and some are funny.

However, the story as a whole does work and keeps the reader wondering a will come next right up to the end---an enjoyable, Good Read.

A B Movie in book form

You know how you watch a B Movie, and it's bad, but you get sucked in and have to keep watching? That's how I felt as I thumbed through this book.

The story was not realistic. I mean, who gets drunk with strangers and the next morning, hungover over coffee, invites them to move in?

The lead character was interesting, at the same time both psycho and kind. The other characters were OK enough to pique your interest.

Some parts stood out as either lazy wrist my or editing, or both. All in all, like Sharknado, I'll prob give the sequel a shot if I'm need of brain candy.

NO SWEAT PANTS ALLOWED is a fun dive into the lives of four women, Elaina, Tawny, Stephanie, and Grace. They form a bond of friendship and support. To strengthen that bond, they decide to live together.

Needless to say, four emotionally struggling women under one roof proves to be more of a challenge than any of them imagined. The arrangement also proves to be an opportunity. All of the four women learn more about themselves, the way they view themselves, and how they handle relationships. Sometimes the learning process involves laughter, sometimes tears. But the glue that holds them together is a desire to help each other. I enjoyed reading this well-written, thoughtful, fun book!

Divorcee Elaina is the female lead in No Sweat Pants Allowed. Gaining her freedom, a boat load of cash, and a mini-mansion from her control freak ex-husband, Elaina is waiting in line at a jewelry sale when she meets three very different woman. Like herself, each is in her forties and struggling to adjust to a new chapter in her life. Over several bottles of wine, the women form a bond that leads to Elaina inviting the 3 to move in with her. But all is not as perfect as Elaina imagined. Sure they're united in wreaking havoc on their ex's, and in favor of letting a big fur ball of a Husky room with them, but 4 different personalities leads to disagreements and bottled up anxieties. As a fan of women's fiction, No Sweat Pants Allowed kept me entertained from beginning to end.

Wine club works

I found this book to be really chock full of humor. It's hard to believe that four women who were strangers to each other found a way to connect with each other over their love life in a bar drinking wine. But that is exactly what happened. Thus, the book will make you feel lonely, ugly, useless, and happy and funny at the same time.
