SSG Cull Dempsey returns to the town he grew up in ostensibly to help get one of his men settled after a career ending injury, but he’s at a crossroads himself. Code of Service is about a hero who is willing to put his life on the line for those he cares about. He's a hero who is learning to cope with life after dedicating it to the military. This is a story of self redemption more than a love story of two people finding their place in the world.
The story itself was enjoyable; however, there were moments in which I struggled with it. The first quarter part of the book, there was various third persons POV. I understand the essential to introduce all the characters, or set the ground for possible future books, but in the infancy of a story, taking the focus away from the main characters distracts you for the story itself. It was difficult to connect with the main character when everyone else is having a perceptive within the story. This was a huge struggle for me. Some of those POV could have been omitted because it did nothing for the story. A small inconvenience was some of the military acronyms. When writing a military story, please don't assume your readers know what some of those terms means. Abbreviate after you state what it is.
The other part I struggled with was the heroine. The author introduced her a little passed a quarter in, and unfortunately her POV was only alternating half of the time. For me, this where the story actually begins. It's an insta-love romance between two broken people, piecing themselves together. Their coupling was sexy, however, it could have used a little more spice in detailing. I was hoping (expecting) for a little more fire between them.
As stated in the beginning this is about a man who is a hero. A man overcoming his past, getting a grip of his present, and paving a way for his future. In overall, the story itself was good for someone debuting in writing. It could use some assistance in the area of content, where it has a better flow, less fluff. Some areas were overly elaborated making it longer to get to the point. The characters get their HEA which is great, but the story itself ends in somewhat of a cliffhanger. But the next book is in progress.

JR Bryce's debut book is so good! I love a burly, tough guy who has a heart of gold, especially when it comes to the woman he loves. And that is exactly how Cull Dempsey is. But he's also trying to come to terms with things from his past that he feels endangers anyone he comes to love. But Megan is equally as stubborn and the perfect match for him. The Jameson family has adopted Cull as one of their own when he comes to the aid of their son, Josh. And I am very excited that we will get to know them much better in the future! If you get a chance check this book out! I definitely recommend it! :)
