The Art and Science of Aromatherapy contains an impressive plethora of detailed, yet accessible and interesting, information. Those who are interested in the field will find this to be an excellent reference book, containing fascinating recipes and excellent instruction on blending essential oils, as well as safety information and quite a thorough section on essential oil profiles, plus a bonus appendix containing profiles of oils, butters, and other ingredients. Profiles are quite comprehensive, covering everything from storage instructions, descriptions of the scent and price, and viable substitutions to very technical information such as specific gravity, flash point, and refractive index (including an entire section that explains what those are and how to use them, for those who are looking to take their aromatherapy practice a step further into the more chemical world). Those who, like me, have less experience in the aromatherapy world but still have a healthy curiosity, will be neither overwhelmed nor put off. The author kindly prefaces this book with her own story of her venture into aromatherapy, reminding us that nobody becomes an expert at birth nor overnight, and her tale is quite interesting (and impresses the power of aromatherapy and essential oils on one rather powerfully). The next chapter is a comprehensive history lesson on the origins of aromatherapy, and every bit as interesting as the author's personal story; this is followed up by another chapter explaining the science of aromatherapy. By the time the first three chapters had been read, my curiosity was piqued and I was eager to delve through the rest of the book. I firmly believe that this book is highly multifunctional and will excel as both a reference book for the more skilled and an introductory book meant to grow with the knowledge of the newcomers. The Art and Science of Aromatherapy will certainly stay on my shelves to receive plenty of use, and I can already think of a few people in my life who will be receiving copies from me for Christmas.
The Art & Science of Aromatherapy is chockful of interesting facts and history of aromatherapy. I bought the book thinking I'd just dip my toes into the water a little bit. Before I knew it.. I was deeply immersed and just amazed at the history. I love that the author included recipes that go back eons. Not just centuries.. eons! The author is so knowledgeable. She imparts fascinating tidbits that just make you sit back and say, "WOW!" I loved finding out the "recipes" that are found in the bible. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in aromatherapy. An easy to follow, how-to guide for anyone!
