Every six months a siren blares in Bryniard. Another victim. Another death.
No one knows why people die, aging to death in twenty-four hours. All they know is that this mysterious illness that’s been claiming their lives for generations acts with no mercy or warning.
Unlike the rest of Bryniard, Alissa Kriegen had learned to live not only with the terrible tragedies that devastated her people, but with a secret she had kept for all of her life: the ability to predict who the next victim will be.
When Alissa's worst fear comes to life and her own daughter is marked for death, she has only one choice: cross the walls protecting her town from the monsters outside in hopes to save her child.
Caught in a new world where everything she knows to be true is questioned, Alissa will learn the price of saving a life would be to sacrifice her own principles. While running against time itself, she will have to confront the ultimate How far will she go to save the life of her daughter?
What would you do if you knew your child would be dying in few months? Would you rather spend the remaining time with them or risk everything to look for a cure?
Alissa Kriegen is such a mother and she will do anything to save her daughter. ANYTHING. Even risk her own moral code. Unlike the rest of Bryniard, Alissa knows who the next victim of Senectus will be, leaving her with a six month deadline to find a cure.
On her journey, she is accompanied by her best friend Freyah and Eldric. Freyah is the best friend everyone needs in their life. She is loyal with a kind heart and puts others before her even if it means facing her deepest fears. Eldric van Myr is not your regular grey MMC we usually find in romantic fantasies. He is caring, observant, responsible and loyal with a deep sense of right and wrong. And he shows it. He will do anything to protect the people he cares for even when he knows it will cost him his life.
I don't think I've ever read a fantasy book about a mother as the MC. And this book was like the sneak peek into the world of mothers which I realize was very much needed. The sacrifice, the constant worry for your child's well-being, the determination to protect them and most of all, the boundless love of a mother for her child. I'm very thankful for this new perspective (God knows I can be pretty ungrateful at times).
It's just that everything was happening so fast I didn't get to connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. But the writing is not clunky or too descriptive but easy to read and understand. I think I would read this again.
(P.s: If my review hasn't convinced you yet, then let me say it. PLEASE READ IT! Okay, bye.)
Thank you to the author for this eARC! This had me immediately hooked. The premise reminded me loosely of The Village by M. Night Shyamalan in the best way. A village surrounded by walls with tales of monsters lurking on the outside, with a plague killing an innocent every 6 months on the inside, and a mother realizing her daughter is next so she sets off to figure out how to save her life?? Seriously, HOOKED.
The emotional stakes were high, the tension was there, but things were happening so fast, one thing after another, and I didn’t always get the chance to fully settle into the world or connect with the characters the way I wanted to. I was ready to feel everything and emotionally spiral with the characters, but I just needed a bit more depth and buildup to really get there.
What I did really appreciate about this story was the message at its core- the love between a mother and her daughter. It highlights the fierce, unwavering love and the lengths a mother will go to, along with the sacrifices she’s willing to make. There’s also a quiet reminder woven in about how precious time is and the importance of cherishing the moments we have, which will stay with me. 🫶🏼
Alissa Kriegen has always carried a dangerous secret: she can predict who will die next. But when her own daughter is marked, everything changes. Desperate to save her, Alissa ventures beyond the town’s walls into a world filled with monsters and unsettling truths. As time runs out, she’s forced to question everything she believes—and how far she’s willing to go to save her child.
This story completely pulled me in and didn’t let go. As a mother, I felt such a deep connection to Alissa—her fear, her determination, and the impossible choices she’s forced to face hit hard on an emotional level. It’s one of those books that makes you pause and think, what would I do in her place?
Alissa is an incredibly strong and admirable character. Her journey is intense, layered, and filled with moments that really showcase her resilience and love. Watching her step outside everything she’s ever known to fight for her daughter was both heartbreaking and inspiring. I also really loved the romantic subplot—it added just the right amount of warmth and tension without taking away from the main story. The pacing and twists, all kept me hooked. This is definitely a story that stays with you. Highly recommend!
I was able to read this book as an Arc, and I’m so grateful that the author reached out to me! This story had me right from the very beginning. It was mysterious and exciting. It gave me The Village vibes at first. Think a mix of fantasy and dystopian. You follow Alissa on a journey, desperate to save her daughter’s life thats on the line as she has been chosen as the next victim of “Senectus Subita” a mysterious ailment. It’s a story full of Love and Sadness, excitement and anger. It has a lovely lesson on how time is fleeting, theres only so much time in our lives and we should never take it for granted. Enjoy EVERY moment of our lives. As a parent I felt every single feeling in this story. It has been left open for a continuation and I cannot wait to see what happens next! This story is unique, and I loved every second of it. Thank you for this exciting tale.
Just wow! I have never read a book like this before and it had me gasping and sitting at the edge of my seat.
Plot: This novel has a very strong plot. With the basis being a single-mom trying to save her daughter, it’s - a unique story in the fantasy setting. Things get started right away with Alissa needing to find an answer to why her daughter is picked next to die, and progresses in an expected way (in the best way possible) up until unexpected situations arise and leave you wondering- how are they going to make this happen???? Everything brought up in this book is intentional and plays a role to explain a point. I LOVE that in a book!
Characters: Alissa is a really good FMC. And i love that in the beginning, she describes herself as an ‘okay’ mom, often being hard on Dhalia or dismissing her. That made her character arc that much more meaningful. Alissa experiences so much heartbreak (you did us SO DIRTY with that one crazy twist, iykyk😭) but her focus and goals remain constant. Eldric is the absolute sweetest and i love him. Great MMC. And then of course Freyah. The best friend is always an important role. I loved how the author really made the characters interact and showed us how they play into each other’s stories. Even the minor characters had important roles to play.
Magic system: The concept of threads of life & death, and other forms of magic was really fascinating to learn about. I would have really loved even more information into the magic system and the history of magic in this world. But that’s always something I want more of in my fantasy novels! I sometimes felt like Alissa’s role in magic was a bit quick and rushed.
Writing-style: The writing was very poetic, emotional and smooth to read. Many quotes really hit you in the feels. The only thing that would sometimes confuse me is the POV switches. I know it’s written in 3rd POV but sometimes we’d be discussing Alissa’s emotions/experience and the next paragraph would jump into Eldric’s emotions/thoughts, and then the next paragraph or two a different character and I would get confused. I almost wish it would’ve been distinct chapters of POV or honestly even first person.
OVERALL: I’ve never read a book like this before and it truly amazed me. The themes in this book are so universal; sacrifice (so much sacrifice), unconditional love, acceptance, fate, justice. Everything came around full circle in unexpected ways and it was true poetic justice. I highly recommend this book!
What would you risk to save someone you love? Would you leave them behind knowing you only have 6 months to save them?
Alissa has grown up behind the safety of thick walls, protected from the monsters beyond; but like clockwork every 6 months another life is claimed; another soul gone forever to a mysterious illness that no one understands. Alissa is cursed with being able to predict who will be next and for years has had to deal with the horror of looking that person in the eye, knowing there was no way to stop it. But when her 5 year old daughter is next she will risk her life to buy her more time.
This story is so beautiful showing the lengths a mother would go to protect her child. Alissa is not alone, she is joined by her dearest friend Freyah (whom leaves the safety of their village without even understanding how Alissa knows her daughter is next). Making their way they met Eldric, a soldier who agrees to help the women on their travels.
This story does have a romance subplot but not at the expense of Alissa’s main goal. What surprised me was the multiple povs, which could get confusing but don’t in this story, if anything it adds to who’s thinking/feeling what. As a mother myself it was a powerful message of life is too short and don’t take anything for granted
This book is for women who want to feel a mother's love for her daughter carried out to its full conclusion.
When it comes down to life and death, Alissa will do anything to save her daughter. This one hit hard, so make sure you're ready. The intensity is balanced out by the warmth of friendship and the unexpected spark of romance.
When a mysterious illness marks her daughter for death, Alissa must leave her walled down behind in search of answers. She only has six months. Joined by her best friend and a disgruntled soldier, the trio trio face unexpected dangers, betrayal, and heartbreak. This book is an incredible journey across a wide, wild kingdom, full of ancient secrets and magic, but the cost might be higher than Alissa ever planned. Still, she carries forward and does what must be done. Full of heart, transformation, and triumph, you won't want to miss this!
Every six months, a siren sounds in Bryniard — and someone is marked to die within twenty-four hours ⏳💀. Alissa has always known who the next victim will be… until her own daughter is chosen, forcing her beyond the walls into danger, monsters, and impossible choices 🏹🌑.
The premise instantly hooked me with its eerie mystery and fierce mama-bear energy 🖤🔥. The emotional stakes and moral dilemmas kept me turning pages.
The world-building unfolds in intriguing ways that constantly challenge what’s real and who can be trusted 🌫️✨. Dark, emotional, and thought-provoking — this story explores sacrifice, destiny, and how far someone will go to save the person they love most. I’m giving this one 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book caught my attention from the first page. The writing is very captivating, the descriptions made me feel Alicia’s emotions and got me cheering for her journey. Every step of her way got me thinking about what I would do if I was in her place.
Also, the book beautifully highlights different forms of love: friendship, motherhood, and romantic love. The romantic aspect, in particular, carries an intriguing and captivating tone, yet it never overshadows the true focus of the story: Alicia’s journey to save her daughter.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I easily fell in love with the FMC alissa and the way she’s so protective of her family and those she meets I really connected with. The final 25% of the book hits you with the craziest plot twist ever.
This brand new debut novel by Giovanna Montagneri is about city called Bryniard that is doomed with a plague where one person dies suddenly every 6 months. No one knows who will be next to succumb to this disease until 24 hours before they pass — they suddenly become ill and age drastically within a day. However, the FMC Alissa, has a gift that enables her to be able to see who will be the next person to die because she sees these black and white threads surrounding that person. These threads appear surrounding them soon as the previous person is buried. One day, after a funeral of an older man who was taken by the plague, Alissa saw that her young daughter had the threads surrounding her; and it became her mission to find out the cure to the disease to save her daughter and the rest of the city.
This book is packed with adventure, monsters, love, and tragedy … and will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen!
First of all, thank you to the author for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the blurb for this book. A woman on a quest to save her daughter's life is such a unique and heartfelt premise, unlike the thousands of similar plots we see in fantasy books these days.
The book read really quickly. Before I knew it, I was 25% in, and hungry for more. The only thing I had a hard time with, is that the continuous switching of POVs within the same chapter made it confusing sometimes. The characters would also be reffered to as 'the little girl' or 'the soldier', which is possible since it was in third person perspective, but it felt a bit odd.
We also got chapters from completely new characters, which I love. Seeing what the enemy is doing and having knowledge the protagonists don't, does enhance the experience for me. However, I did think it was a bit strange that we get information about the protagonists while in a different character's chapter, when they haven't even met each other. I had to read it multiple times to realise this person was not thinking about the other characters, and this was more of an information dump -- even though the reader could have easily reached this same conclusion with the information they had. I don't really like being spoon-fed information this way, I like it when we have to think a bit more. This felt like in a movies, the scene would pause and a narrator would tell the viewer how to interpret the info and what would happen next, before continuing on with the scene.
The book was really well-written, especially since English is not this author's first language. It sounded serious and sometimes even flowery, except dialogue sometimes came across a bit childish. ("I'm sick of this supid potion. It tasted like vomit."; "That was a huge mistake.") There just seemed to be a big difference between the dialogue and narration to me. Also the banter between Eldric and Alissa in the early stages of their relationship felt more like siblings picking on each other, than sexual tension, but luckily that got better over time.
There were a couple of inconsistencies (it took ages to tell Eldric the truth, yet she tells Breno about it instantly) and small plotholes where a quick and easy solution was given (nobody has gone beyond the wall in hundreds of years, yet Alissa coincidentally finds a way within a day; Dahlia's father was never seen again) and I honeslty thought Alissa was a bit petulant at times (though I realised she was only 23 so that's not so strange, and Freya was my favorite character anyway), but like I said, the writing was good, the mystery surrounding the isolation was intriguing and made me want to keep reading. And as a mother of two little girls myself, Lissa's heartbreak really tugged at my heartstrings and I did shed a couple of tears for the predicament.
AUTHORS DEDICATION: To every extraordinary woman, To every devoted mother, If you ever forget the depths of your strength, let this book be your reminder: There is no greater force in this world than that of a woman.
This Stand-Alone novel was a refreshing change from my recent reads! It features a town encircled by a towering wall, isolated from the outside world. At the heart of the story is a mother cursed to foresee when people will die. One day, when she gazes at her daughter, her worst fear becomes a reality: her daughter is marked for death. This book beautifully shows a mother’s love for her child and her unyielding determination to protect her at all costs. The story portrays profound love, fierce strength, and relentless resolve, making you feel as though you are right there alongside this mother on her journey to save her child.
As the story unfolds and time begins to run out, you find yourself on the edge of your seat, anxiously wondering if she will make it back to her baby in time. The emotional rollercoaster you experience will leave you breathless by the end. I truly enjoyed this read and deeply appreciate its portrayal of motherhood, especially as a mother myself. I cannot wait to see what stems from this storyi. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this! I would wholeheartedly recommend it to all mothers!
💛Mother Fight for Daughter ⏳️Cursed Town 💛Hidden Magic ⏳️Fight Against Time 💛Best Friend loyalty ⏳️Found Family 💛Slow-burn Romance ⏳️Close Door Romance
I picked this story because of the central conflict: A mother fights to save her daughter's life.
In a city surrounded by walls to keep supposed monsters at bay, Alissa struggles to support herself and her daughter. Every six months a citizen succumbs to a mysterious disease that ages them within 24 hours, ending in death. Alissa is the only one who can see who the next victim is before it happens. Tragic, but resigned, Alissa tries not to overthink it - until the next victim chosen is her daughter.
With a six month window, Alissa embarks on a journey beyond the wall for answers that seem impossible. She finds friends, foes, a kingdom of lies, and a Canyon of Truth. She finds love in unexpected places and she finds the inner strength she has always possessed rise to the surface.
I enjoyed Alissa's journey and her devotion to her best friend, who accompanies her, as well as the devotion to saving her daughter. At the beginning of the chapters/chapter breaks, the author has a countdown until the death date of her daughter, creating a wonderful sense of urgency. The magic system presented here is delightfully original. The story itself finishes neatly, but does leave room for more stories in the future.
I audibly gasped at two key parts of the story. I whipped through the last 15% of the eBook copy of my ARC - I had to know if the FMC made it to her daughter in time and how it would play out!
GUYS!! Threads of Life and Death by G. Montagneri is such a wonderfully written and beautiful book. I read this as an ARC🙏
“Every six months a siren blares in Bryniard: Another victim. Another death.”
I was instantly intrigued and brought into the book at the very beginning. The village/kingdom atmosphere drew me in and all of the characters introduced were complex and explored as individuals. I was attached to so many of the people in this book, they felt like friends (or enemies). The immersive world building was done to where I felt like I was taken on a journey right along with the main character Alissa. The plot was unique and mysterious kept me guessing the whole time.
There were so many shocking twists where I audibly gasped and said NOOOOOOO, but then I was giggling and tearing up in other parts!
This is a romantic fantasy novel that follows the jorney of Alissa, who, after predicting the death of her daughter, must race against time to save her. It’s a story about time, love and sacrifices. All of that in a world full of magic and mysteries. ⚔️Strong female characters (THEY ARE SO COOL AND STRONG) 🖤Romantic subplot (EEEE🥰🫣) 🥀No spice 🔮Magic systems (very intriguing and eerie) 🏰Mysteries (political intrigue along with the magic system)
An amazing tale of loyalty, magic, fate and what it takes to protect those you love.
⭐️ Rating: 5/5 🩷 Genre: Fantasy 🏹 Tropes: strong female characters, lost magic, unique magic aystem, romantic sub plot, mysteries, political intrigue, world building
It's always such a privilege being trusted to read an ARC for a debut author, and I absolutely loved this book! The main character Alissa must uncover the secrets of the mysterious curse that plagues her town in order to save what is most precious to her, her daughter. As she embarks on her journey she is joined by her best friend and an unlikely hero, who together solve a centuries old secret. Full of lost magic, a unique world, loyalty and betrayal, Threads of Life and Death is a fantastic fantasy read.
I loved the characters and all of their quirks and motivations. The descriptions and prose are beautifully written so that you can clearly picture the scenes as you read. Although I would have loved to have learned more about the history and stories of the world, and had more unique character POV to view the story from just their perspective, espeically the "villain" Ranier.
I can't wait to read the next installment in this series, and cannot recommend it enough for fans of fantasy.
From the very first page, this book had me completely hooked.
The writing style is absolutely gorgeous — descriptive, emotional, and immersive in a way that makes you feel everything alongside the characters. Reading this didn’t just feel like following a story, it felt like an experience.
What stood out the most to me was the portrayal of a mother’s love. This book truly shows that a mother would do anything for her child, no matter the cost. That theme is at the heart of the story, and it was handled so beautifully and powerfully. It was, without a doubt, one of the strongest and most emotional aspects of the book.
I also really loved the romance. It didn’t take away from the main plot (which I appreciated) but at the same time, it still felt meaningful and important. It added another emotional layer without overshadowing the core story.
There were moments where this book had me in an absolute chokehold. The plot is dynamic, intense, and at times completely unpredictable. I genuinely didn’t know where the story was going next, which made it even more gripping.
Overall, I really loved this book. It’s emotional, beautifully written, and incredibly engaging. I can’t wait to read more from this author, because if this is their debut, then it’s honestly the kind of debut every author dreams of.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Alright, this one is for sure the next book you need to add to your TBR. A gripping new romantasy novel, this story blends elements of a classic dystopian story into this read. Not only does the story hook you from page one and each chapter encourage you to keep reading, the story is just absolutely one of a kind. The magic system and the world building are so unique and I simply could not put this book down. Also, the characters? HELLO AND WELCOME! Alissa is such a new romantasy FMC as we rarely meet a young mother as the lead of a story. Not only that, but she’s racing against time to save her daughter as well. We also get the beautiful character of Freyah, who is one of my favorite best friend characters that I’ve read. And we can’t forget about Eldric, our dreamy MMC who never failed me make me giggle with that lil wink when he’s fighting another man. This is quite possibly one of the best new books out there and I want to give my sincerest gratitude to Giovanna for reaching out to me with this ARC. If you haven’t added Threads of Life and Death to your TBR, run (don’t walk) and add it now!
Threads of Life and Death is a 5-star strong debut and one that really stood out to me.
What I appreciated most was the writing style. It reminded me a lot of Rachel Gillig—more atmospheric and layered than your typical fantasy. A lot of fantasy can feel a little fluffy at times, but this one had real depth and intention behind it, which made it that much more engaging to read.
Without revealing too much, at its core, this story is about a mother and what she’s willing to do to save her child. And as a mom, that part really hit. The sacrifices, the impossible choices, and the emotional weight of it all felt very real and relatable. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be left wanting to know more.
This is one of those stories that balances a fascinating world with strong emotional stakes and political intrigue. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
Many thanks to G. Montagneri for the ARC to review!
Thank you so much G.Montagneri for the ARC! I was entranced the entire time.
Did you not get used to enduring the pain by now?
I need to preface this review that at the time of reading, I had a 6 year old and 4 month old... Both girls so the premise of this story was already hitting quite close to home.
A mother who has 6 months to try and save her daughter's life? To what lengths will she go to and who will stand with her along the way?
To say that this story didn't have me in tears multiple times would be an understatement. Let's just say, I am glad for my heart's sake that this story was a standalone.
This is probably the first book in a long time where there's a very real sense of "how much time does it take to get point A to point B? Oh Months?" To me? That was very realistic HOWEVER that also means I was PANICKING A LOT.
10/10 story 10/10 characters 10/10 twists
Indie authors really know how to twist knives into my heart
this book delves into the lengths a mother would go to save her child. Alissa, the fmc, lives in a world where someone dies every six months from a mystery disease. Alissa secretly is able to tell who the next person will be. When the most recent person falls victim to this disease, she realizes with horror that her young daughter is slated to die next.
I found Threads of Life and Death to be poignant and thought provoking! As a mother I felt Alissa’s emotions deep down into my bones throughout the story. There are some especially lovable characters in here (looking at you Freya), an intriguing mystery, and a sense of urgency that left me biting my nails.
it was really refreshing to read about a fantasy mother as a main character, despite the fact that it was heartbreaking at times (in the best way)
I think this was a really impressive read especially as it was the author’s debut! I do recommend. 🤍
A gripping and emotional read built around a powerful premise—a mother racing against time to save her daughter from a fate she can already see coming. The story balances tension and heart really well, with a steady sense of urgency that keeps you turning pages.
The world unfolds in interesting ways as the journey moves beyond the city walls, adding mystery and depth without losing focus on the core relationship. What stands out most is the emotional drive behind the story, which feels genuine and impactful throughout.
Fast-paced, engaging, and heartfelt, this is one that’s hard to put down—especially toward the end.
This is one of the most original books I've ever read!
The fact that the main character is a mom makes the whole experience more mature and empathetic. I just loooooooved the main male character, he is wholesome and loving.
I love how the world is built and how we can see Alyssa's journey unfolding and evolving. I couldn't stop reading until the last page, and it was so worth it. I can't believe this is a debut novel!
Oh, and props to Freya as well. My favorite female character—I could see myself in her, and I believe anyone who reads it will find a piece of themselves in the characters.
G. Montagneri crafted a unique world with believably flawed characters I couldn't help rooting for (or hating). As a mother, I related deeply to the FMC and the stakes underlying her journey throughout the book. I laughed, I cried, I yelled angrily at my kindle. What more could you ask for?
I’m not usually a fan of fiction, but this book completely changed my perspective on the genre. I finished it in just a couple of days because I couldn’t put it down.
I definitely recommend it! It would also make a great Mother’s Day gift, as Alissa truly represents the strength and the lengths a mother will go to for her children.
The love of a mother knows no bounds. I was emotionally invested since the beginning. I was not expecting the heartbreaking plot twist but they were amazingly done. The story was beautifully written.
Love this quote: “You may find that the impossible is more often a product of our own convictions rather than truth set in stone, my child.”
As a mom of girls, I knew this book was going to wreck me. Montagneri does an excellent job of portraying the lengths a mother will go to in order to help their child. We second guess our choices, but at the end of the day, we just want them to thrive.
This book is about a mothers’ adventure to save her daughter from a curse. She finds herself in a foreign land, and learns who she is as a person again. She might even find love along the way. Only to find that, in the end, a mothers’ sacrifice is what saves her baby.
Excellent book, but make sure to grab some tissues
