Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

A fun dive into the origins of Spider-Man, collecting the first five issues of "The Amazing Spider-Man" with Spidey's very first appearance (Amazing Fantasy #15) which is my favorite issue in this volume, followed by issue #4 (Sandman). It's quite amazing how every issue managed to introduce a major villain, let alone the omnipresence of J. Jonah Jameson; Spider-Man's greatest enemy. My ultimate favorite bits were Jameson's obsession with Spider-Man and Spider-Man's obsession with money.

Good stories and drawings. The dialogue is a little dated.

I really enjoyed this! I have had a soft spot for Spider-Man for a long time--I grew up reading some Spider-Man comics, really loved the old Spider-Man cartoon from the 1990s, thought the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon was great, and have faithfully watched all of the movies--and I love the Japanese Spider-Man, too!

So finally, finally, I read the original ten comics--even going back to read the first ten comics in Fantastic Four to give myself context because they had a lot of crossover in the early days. I thought it was interesting that Spidey tried to join FF early on, since eventually he actually did join that group.

I enjoyed seeing how Spidey's smart mouth developed over time--he wasn't very prone to it at first.

I thought it was funny that one issue his name randomly changed to Peter Palmer!

I enjoyed seeing how Spidey's spider-sense was originally much more flexible. Pete could use the power to track down baddies, and he could baddies could develop machines that somehow send MESSAGES through his spider-sense (because apparently it's a scientific thing).

Oh! And Uncle Ben never says "With great power comes great responsibility"!!!! That was just a line by the narrator! That surprised me, too.

Who was the first supervillain Spidey faced? Chameleon, of all things! (The FF faced the Skrulls I think in their second issue, so similar.) Also we get the origins of the Vulture, Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, a random robot computer, Sandman, Electro, and a group called the Enforcers! Plus he fights the Human Torch and Doctor Doom.

The baddies definitely had less... depth to them at this early date, but it was still tons of fun to read. For some reason I also didn't realize that briefly Pete dated Betty Brant.

Anyway, I want to read more! Thinking about reading the vast array of SM comics is kind of overwhelming, but it would be fun to at least read a few more volumes. Excelsior!

It was such a fun to read the first stories of Spider-man, which really exceeded my expectations. A real amusement.

Interesting to read the first ever stories of the Amazing Spider-Man. Also of note, that for about two or three issues, they called his alter-ego Peter Palmer.

It’s amazing how well these comics have held up. And how much of the Spider-Man mythos was introduced in the first handful of issues.

Totalmente recomendado.

This is the first volume of a new editions that will give us all the great Marvel works. It was only four Euros and I could not resist buying it. Although it is a German translation. And this a problem.

Right on the first page a guy says about Peter that the bookworm wouldn’t know a Cha-Cha from a Waltz. The translator gives us „Der Bücherwurm kann sicher nicht einmal tanzen“. Meaning the bookworm can’t dance. At least Bookworm is translated correctly. On the next page we get Eierkopf (egghead) instead of bookworm. Then “Get our regards to the Atom-Smashers” becomes “Grüss mir die Atome” which is not even the same sense. Is it important? I think it is. Especially since on the Editorial page they rave about the prose of Stan Lee. One final example:

“A Spider whom fate has given a starring, if brief, role to play in the Drama called life.” You do not have to like it, but this is Lee prose. (This spider plays a brief but important role in our story.)

The guy responsible for the “translation” is Michael Strittmatter.

The printing is fine the background information at least acceptable. The stories themselves are, to tell the truth, only great because of what they once meant for us, when we were kids. I have no problem with a man who can climb up walls or an old guy with wings who can fly. (In fact the vulture is great.) But some stupid aliens who give up their conquering attempt just because a Spider-Man comes across? Well.

I would love to reread the first adventures in Hardcover. But not with this translation.

This is a nice collection of the first Spider-man comics. The art is classic Marvel, buildings rising in perspective as human figures contort and tumble in action poses. The dialogue is corny at times; this is the place to hear Spider-man say, "End of the line for you, commie!"

Along with the first Spider-man story, there are a bunch of first appearances here, such as Vulture, Dr. Octopus, Chameleon, Sandman, Tinkerer, and a face-off with Dr. Doom. Many of the plots are contrived but they are fun to read. The 3 page extra on how Stan Lee and Steve Ditko worked together is a blast to read. Recommended for those who want some good 'ol silver age action.
