Rate this book
When newly-single Milly Somerville decides to move to Madrid, she is dreaming of a glamorous lifestyle in the Spanish capital. But when strange things start happening in the apartment she is renting, her dream turns into a nightmare. In an unfamiliar environment, with no friends and without the language skills to tell anyone what is happening to her, Milly becomes increasingly disturbed by events she can’t explain and is powerless to stop. Will she uncover the apartment’s dark secrets before it’s too late? Or has her fate already been sealed? A compelling page-turner, Emma Warhurst’s debut novella will stay with you long after the final page.

While I understand why it’s written in the first person, that style of story is not very forgiving. It’s harder to do well.

It definitely read as a first foray into writing. I honestly got so sick of all the references to “oh if only I had just left, I won’t be dying.” If it was meant to be foreshadowing, it was very ham-handed.

I’ve noticed with less-experiences writers that often they rely too heavily on showing and not telling. Additionally, the character was not built very well. I didn’t care about her, she was just a snooty rich kid with little to no character development. Stuff happened to her in this story.

Near the end, I did enjoy the creepy mood that was created, but it was a pretty bland story arch. Julian felt like a plot device. He came out of nowhere, and I didn’t believe him.

Anyway, I hope Emma keeps writing and learning. I can’t say I could’ve done a better job myself because writing a novel or novella is HARD.
