A decent first book for the authors. Some of the dialog and actions of the characters didn't quite seem quite right, BUT it was an interesting story, with good pacing, and action. Looking past the flaws, it was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to what they write next.
I enjoyed TMA, and it kept my interest. It has some twists and I found myself alternating between cheering on the main characters and saying "turn around!". The story brings some of New Orleans front and center and you'll run into a character or two that you'll swear is based on somebody you know. It's a long book, but it makes the read worthwhile. A favorite character of mine is the older man who was Eric's first partner on NOPD. And the story effectively moves between those early days when Eric became a cop - vs more current times - when Eric's experience both saves him, and yet limits him, somehow. If you enjoy a suspenseful book with personable characters, you should read TMA. I've given 5 stars only a few times - ever, but this one came real close to that. Great job. I'm looking forward to Projekt, too.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I think this was an interesting story with fun concepts, but it felt like there were a lot of loose ends (or maybe too many ideas packed into one book?) and I was slightly disappointed with the final reveal. However, I thought this was a great debut novel for the authors and I found it immersive and hard to put down. The pacing and the dual timelines flowed well together and I enjoyed reviewing and “analyzing” the various clues.
After finishing the book and looking back, I realize I spent too much time trying to keep up with all the characters/ victims and the details of the murders. I enjoyed the relationship Eric and his partners had and I liked how Eric’s anxiety and PTSD were written. I was left with a ton of questions after the twists/reveals and some of the ideas felt disjointed in a way, as if an idea was there and touched upon and then it was forgotten about without being fully developed or explained, or there was an attempt to wrap it all up at the very end of the book. Regardless, BookSirens indicated this book was the first in a series, so I look forward to seeing what’s next.
*Gentle reminder that these are my opinions. In no way do I think these should prevent a prospective reader from reading this book at all. 😊
