Flowers recounts the birth of his passion for bear hunting and then with a matter-of-fact style walks the reader through his daily education in bear hunting. The book covers quite a few years beginning during his early sport hunting and then transitioning into his role as a professional bear hunter for the forest industry
More of a hunter's diary than a continuous storyline. Extremely niche. Yet, there were moments of interesting and entertaining stories of bear hunting.
The title, is truly representive of the story line. Not anything like l was expecting. Bought this book when l was a youngman and intended on learning more about bear hunting. Didn't read it until l was in my forties. It's a wonderfully written journey about a man's change, from killer to conservationist. Found the book so moving that l searched out the author's life, and found that he had passed not to many years prior. Ended up writing his wife, telling her how much l had enjoyed her husband book and how l felt as though l was traveling the similar journey, moving from hunter to observationist of nature. She wrote a nice letter thanking me for my note, (said, she actually framed it for her grandchildren), which l still have amongst the pages.
