Another book I wouldn't have bought because of the cover - and even so I hesitated to read it. But once I started reading, I soon realized this wasn't what I feared or expected at all - considering this is by Nagira Yuu, I shouldn't be surprised by that, however.
Kazuya is a 22 year old good-for-nothing. He isn't quite a criminal yet, but he works as a guard in a hostess club where most of the women have been tricked into working there by the yakuza responsible for the area. One day, though, the prospective new worker is being followed and protected by someone Kazuya knows all to well - Narita Natsuki was a teacher in training when Kazuya was still in high school five years ago - and Kazuya was in love with him. However, after Kazuya kissed him one evening, Natsuki pushed him away and then disappeared. Seeing him again, Kazuya's first urge is still to help him - and that results in him secretly shouldering the debts the woman - Natsuki's future sister in law - had amassed. He tells Natsuki he managed to talk the yakuza into lowering the debts - and in return for doing that forces Natsuki to sleep with him.
Now that sounds worse than it is - basically that "force" in this case is what Natsuki needs in order to pretend he doesn't want it - he's been in love with Kazuya from the start, but because he doesn't want to disappoint his parents, he has always pretend he isn't gay. And the more time the two of them spend together, the more his pretense fades away.
The problem is, though, that Kazuya has to return quite a lot of money, which leads to him working for a rival yakuza boss who has for some reason taking a liking to him. While that job pays well, it comes with some high risk...
As I mentioned in my status updates, this was the first time I was really scared while reading a novel involving yakuza. Kazuya's way down the slippery slope from a normal life was also really well depicted, and the irony of Kazuya and Natsuki being mutually in love but still not being able to simply enjoy that was wonderfully painful. In that Nagira Yuu way. While she definitely is writing romance novels, and sometimes the situations the characters find themselves in aren't that realistic, the characters' feelings and actions feel real.
This was also a case of a really well-written seme POV. It helps that Kazuya, despite his faults, has a purity to him that makes one hurt for him all the more.
The less said about the art though the better..
In her afterword she mentioned she was planning to write a spin-off involving the rival yakuza, but since it's been years and she doesn't seem to be publishing with Shy Novels anymore I guess that's not happening.. which is too bad, I would have loved to read that.
