Quick Review:

This was my first book by Jamey, and I had a really good time with it. The characters stood out to me right away; they both felt emotionally mature and thoughtfully written. I especially liked how Jamey developed their relationship; it felt very natural, and their dynamic made them easy to root for as a couple.

The only thing that didn’t fully work for me was how early they got together. It wasn’t insta-love, but I personally would’ve loved a slower build. Once they became a couple, the pacing started to drag a bit, and since there wasn’t much conflict or many surprises left, I occasionally felt like the story lost some momentum.

Even so, I still enjoyed the overall journey, and the epilogue was incredibly satisfying; it was such a lovely way to wrap up their story.

I felt like I was watching the game for real with the beautiful description of what happened in the games. But the gorgeous slow burn between Ariana and Nicole, and the heat when they got together was scorching! I LOVE this slow burn, age gap love story! I highly recommend this book! 5 stars!!

Nicole is a commentator for the WNBA, travelling around the US with her friend and commentating partner Shealyn, calling the highest profile women’s basketball games in the country. Both women live in New York, Nicole having her apartment with a basketball court on the roof, and Shealyn living nearby with her husband and two young kids.
Ariana is point guard for New York, and with her best friend, roommate, and fellow player Cameron they are a formidable duo on the court. Ariana’s rule is no dating during playing season, and even in off season, she doesn’t really do steady dating.
When during a game Ariana jumps to reach a stray ball, she falls across the courtside commentating table, landing in Nicole’s lap with Nicole’s quick thinking saving her from a bad injury, caught on national tv. This is the beginning of their illicit relationship. Nicole is expected to be neutral, not favouring any team above another, and dating a player is totally taboo. They have to creep around quietly to avoid Nicole’s network bosses finding out, and even keeping this from their best friends. However when Shealyn tries to set Nicole up with Maggie, a match official, and Nicole rejects her, Maggie becomes suspicious.
I loved both main characters here, both are lovely, thoughtful and intelligent women. Also the rest of the cast are really good too. I thought Maggie would end up being a horrible person, but she showed her decency by not outing them when it mattered.
This is a wonderfully warm, sweet, and yet strongly spicy story from the Queen of Sweet, Jamey Moody!

A special thank you to author Jamey Moody for this wonderful ARC opportunity. I am happy to share my honest review.

I was stoked to read Jamey Moody’s latest creation and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I believe this is Moody’s first foray into the world of sports themed sapphic love stories and she hit it out of the park…or I should probably say it was a slam dunk since this is a basketball book afterall. I love a good forbidden romance and the forbidden aspect of this story was done quite well as both women had so much at stake. Take The Shot is a high stakes, higher reward sapphic love story with high emotion, action forward basketball and a tender love story that had me glued to every page. I am a basketball fan but really don't know the exact rules per se lol but no need to worry! Moody does an excellent job of highlighting the fun, competitive and collaborative parts of the sport without being overly technical. Honestly, even if you’ve never watched a moment of basketball in your life, you’d still appreciate the sport in the way Moody has written it. I felt like this was a sports romance that was even more unique in that it discusses the pressures and sacrifices women must make in professional sports or just professionally in general. I very much enjoyed this book!

We are thrust into the action right away and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! I love when we get to the good stuff sort of immediately without having too much of the angsty stuff. We meet WNBA superstar, Ariana who has worked her butt off to become a premier point guard. She is a badass whose skills and divisive nature has made her a force to be reckoned with out on the court. Ariana eats, sleeps and breathes basketball which is why she’s the best but is also why she doesn't have much of a romantic life. Okay so she does have a bit of a crush on the smoking hot broadcaster that covers most of her games along with most of the WNBA but that’s just a crush that wont amount to anything…right? Nicole is ambitious and controlled. She has worked tirelessly in the pursuit of her career. She prides herself on objectivity in her broadcasting analysis and has finally reached top broadcaster status. Nicole doesn't have time for love because her sole focus is her professional career…it’s become her entire identity actually.

The chemistry with Nicole and Ariana is just jumping off of the pages! We learn that Ariana has a huge crush on Nicole and I could see Nicole was every bit as intrigued by Ariana before the big collision! Ariana is playing her heart out in her team's opening day game and in a spectacular move to keep the ball from going out of bounds and flies over the media table right into the lap of a very shocked Nicole! This moment was so exciting and was the catalyst for everything. Time stood still as the women felt an undeniable spark that reached their hearts and made them both feel something they’d never experienced. Big time swoon from me! From here on out we get a gradual and realistic journey of two women who find something special in one another and can't deny it.

There is so much at stake here as Nicole’s role as a top tier WNBA broadcaster creates a real ethical conflict and Ariana can be seen as having some sort of unfair insight or advantage. Bottom line it’s messy and unfair that they can't just fall in love, be in love and live happily ever after. But nothing in life that is worth having ever comes easy and that is what we discover along the journey between Ariana and Nicole. There are so many obstacles, road blocks and land mines but what Ari and Nicole have is real. The inevitable split was gut wrenching for me but it was necessary in the moment. I loved the way they found their way back to one another and chose each other unapologetically. They are so good together and they refuse to let the noise in and let their precious love be a casualty of a system that is always more unfair for women. I was so happy and even teared up a bit when they got out of their own way and embraced their love. In typical Jamey Moody fashion, Ariana and Nicole embody everything we all fantasize for love to be. They were amazing women in their own rights but together they are an incredible partnership that is everything any of us could ever wish for!

The pacing in this book is on point! Not too much angst but enough push and pull to make the final payout worth it Moody’s use of the dual pov helped me to really get to know both Nicole and Ariana. I feel like I was able to connect to both of them and it really made me root for them as a couple. Moody does an incredible job of creating characters that I grow to truly care about and even think about long after I've finished the book. The writing is full of emotion and riddled with tension. Moody writes with intention and her writing is evocative and yet controlled. I never lost the action and competitiveness that the basketball aspect brought to the story but the love story was definitely front and center.

Take The Shot is really great and I will definitely be adding to my re-read list. This story is a sweet, electric, high stakes sapphic love story with a very satisfying emotional reward. We get two badass women who refuse to shrink to appease the cynics and despite some real obstacles, choose themselves and each other full on. I have so much respect for both of them and was rooting for them all along. This book has everything, drama, angst, spice, action packed sport, tender love and a happy ever after! I very much recommend to all fans of sapphic romance that features ambitious, strong, fully developed women who fight for what they deserve! Take The Shot is a wonderfully entertaining, sexy and swoon worthy forbidden sapphic romance that will nestle in your heart and linger in your mind long after the last page.

Jamey Moody has a way of creating characters that you wish you were friends with. Take The Shot has two such characters. Adriana “Ari”, a WNBA powerhouse and Nicole “Nic”, a WNBA commentator. A relationship between the two is forbidden because there would be a conflict of interest…tell that to their hearts. In a game Nic is calling, Ariana makes a play for the ball and goes flying through the air right into Nic’s lap! Their eyes meet and an undeniable connection is made.

Then there is a children’s basketball event that, unbeknownst to either of them, they both volunteer at. As they talk, they come to realize that basketball is all they live for. Ariana studies videos of games and figures out ways to make herself better against other teams. Nicole spends hours researching the next team and players she will be commentating.

The more time they spend together, whether playing one-on-one on Nic’s rooftop basketball court, watching films of games and sharing information they both see or sharing a meal, the more they fall for each other, and the more they have to be careful. Can they make a relationship work that is strictly against contract rules?

The research Jamey does for her books is extraordinary! She makes it so her descriptions take you right inside the action, like you’re court side and can actually hear Nic calling the game!

If you love sapphic sport stories and age-gap stories, you are going to love this book. If you are unfamiliar with Jamey’s books, this is a great one to start with, but be warned…you are going to want to dive into all of Jamey’s books afterwards! Enjoy!

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review. I honestly love this book!

Jamey Moody never lets you down with her books and Take the Shot is no exception. In this book, she introduces us to a professional basketball and the commentators that call the game.

We have Ariana, who is the star basketball player on the New York team who makes quite an impression on the commentator covering their game, Nicola, after she makes a flying leap! Both her and Nicola feel a very strong connection, which presents a problem for Nicola. Nicola has gone from commentating college games and has moved up to commentating on WNBA games. She’s great with statistics and well respected in her profession, but it also under a contract with strict guidelines.

As they get to know one another, and spend time together, Nicola gives Arianna tips on how she can improve her game and tips on other teams to look for and suggestions on how to play to overcome the challenges. And how to get around those points when she plays them. As they shoot baskets on Nicola’s basketball court on the roof of her apartment, they develop a friendship and much more! The secondary characters are supportive and full of advice. Will Ariana and Nicole take a chance on more?

This book is well written with accurate details on both basketball and the commentators. I strongly suggest you pick up and copy and immerse yourself in the story between Ariana and Nicola and an enjoyable read by an author you love.

Take the Shot is Jamey Moody’s latest successful sapphic matchup. In the winning basketball-themed story, WNBA player Ariana Villa, 29, dives headfirst into the life of her favorite courtside color commentator, Nicole Neal, 42.

They each exchange a look that electrifies the other, and their dynamic meet-cute is complete.

Ariana and Nicole soon meet again, unexpectedly, as they both volunteer at a children’s basketball event. They realize they share an all-consuming devotion to the sport, spending little time doing anything else.

When she’s not at the mike, Nicole, previously a college basketball player and a respected women’s basketball broadcaster, puts in countless hours to research the teams and players she’ll be commentating on.

Similarly, Ariana, heralded as the WNBA’s best point guard, spends her time off the court watching game films to analyze how she can best prevail against her opponents.

Their shared love of the game evolves into a love for each other, but Nicole’s contract prohibits relationships with players to avoid any conflict of interest.

They’re forced, then, to decide if their work or their relationship is paramount.

Moody’s main characters are women you’ll root for, and you’ll be engaged with their interactions with each other and their respective circle of friends.

I very much enjoyed Jamey Moody's latest F/F romance called "Take the Shot", which had the sport of Basketball as its background; so it was well named.

The two main characters were attracted to each other, but especially after Ariana landed in Nicole's lap during a game. Nicole was a game broadcaster, while Ariana was an important member of her New York team. My favourite character was Nicole, the elder of the two, who had so much to lose if things got out of hand; having said that, I don't mean to detract from Ariana in any way. Of course there had to be an issue to keep the readers on their toes, and this was quite a serious worry for both women.

Jamey has a knack for introducing appealing minor/supporting characters and these always add to my enjoyment of the story. The minor character I best related to was Cameron, a fellow team member and the best friend of Ariana. They shared accommodation.

Thank you Jamey, for the great, easy read and well- flowing book.

A Winning Shot On and Off the Court

Take the Shot by Jamey Moody is a heartfelt, engaging romance that perfectly blends sports, vulnerability, and emotional growth. From the first chapter, the story pulls you in with authentic characters who feel real—flawed, determined, and deeply human. The basketball backdrop adds energy and tension, but it’s the emotional stakes and personal journeys that truly make this book shine.

Moody does an excellent job balancing slow-burn chemistry with meaningful character development. The romance unfolds naturally, built on trust, quiet moments, and genuine connection rather than rushed drama. I especially loved how themes of self-doubt, courage, and taking risks—on and off the court—were woven into the story. By the end, the payoff feels earned and deeply satisfying. If you enjoy sapphic sports romance with strong emotional depth and lovable characters, Take the Shot is absolutely worth the read.

Nicole, an ace broadcaster for the WNBA and Ariana, the NY basketball team's superstar, try desperately to fight their attraction. As in all her books, there is little to no confrontation, but plenty of loving kindness.

Jamey certainly did a lot of research as the depiction of action makes the reader feel as if she were in the arena and the commentators truly felt authentic.

I loved the main characters' interactions on the rooftop going over skills and with the children's basketball event. They had so much in common which made it much more difficult to stay away from each other, but Jamey didn't rush anything which made the longing even more appealing.

This book is a very engaging and heartfelt romance which Jamey Moody does beautifully. If you haven't read any of her other books, "take the shot!" It's a winner!

A Wonderfully Sweet & Sexy Sports Romance 💕

An uplifting story about women’s basketball. One half of a WNBA top broadcasting team, ex ball player and overall good person and the top point guard super star of the WNBA know about each other but when a defensive play puts both women in a compromising position, a moment shared has them both taking back. There is an age difference, and it’s forbidden, a commentator and player but there is a spark that has them both questioning. Could they be friends? Not to cross the line or are they doomed before they start. But things start to play out for them, slow and easy and keeping secrets is getting hard to do. Two very hot characters with a sexy cast. Jamey Moody has once again written a story that has grit, humor, loyalty, love and my favorite sport. This book can only generate Five Star reviews. Read it! I loved it 🥰

Ariana Villa likes listening to Nicole Neal, the commentator on their games. Her coach is encouraging Ari to shoot more rather than defend, and she very much catches the broadcaster's eye.
Then stopping a wild ball Ari ends up going over the commentator table into Nicole's lap. Whom is totally okay with that!

The probable villain seems very blatant. Unless it ends up as a fake out, at least.

Ari and Nicold start out as friends, but eventually start dating. But Nicole insists on them being a secret.

(Which makes me go huh? a bit. I mean, a player dating a coach or manager, yes that'd be bad. A announcer tho?)

Eventually it gets serious enough they tell Nicole's bosses, and get caught a few times.

Interestingly the character i thought would be the villain didn't do anything.

Wrap up...

4 stars. Good story, good characters, no third act breakup too.

I always love Jamey’s books - low angst and a happily ever after. Jamey didn’t disappoint with this one! Although this one did have a bit more angst than past books it still gave me that warm fuzzy feeling and the feeling that love wins!

Jamey always has well developed characters that you can relate to. Ariana and Nicole do not disappoint. Ariana the young basketball star and Nicole the knowledgeable sports commentator. They both have focused on building their careers and don’t have time for love. But as they connect and start to build their relationship they realize that they can have the best of both worlds.

If you want a feel good love story read this book.

Ms Moody never disappoints, but in this book her writing takes on another level. I’m not a basketball fan as I am in England and its football (soccer) most of the time in my household. BUT, I really enjoyed the technical aspects of basketball, played out with an age gap friendship and then a secret romance between a sports commentator and a player - this is not allowed apparently!

You know what you are going to get with Ms Moody, low aghast, good romance and a HEA. This book is all that and more. A little more real with some conflict and meaty bits to get into. A must read for all sports/romance fans out there - you will not regret it.

This is one of my favorites of Moody's books. I've watched a few WNBA games in my day and the writing put me right in the middle of the action. There's some angst in this sports romance due to the positions of the main characters. The way the relationship between Nicole and Ariana develops is truly natural and realistic. I really like this new writing direction Moody has taken with this book. I look forward to reading a lot more in the future.

Nothing but net!

I’m not the biggest fan of basketball, or sports in general really. This book however has opened my eyes to possibly watching in the future. If JM has managed to make that happen in the space of one book, it shows how great it is.
I’m a huge fan of this author. No matter which book you decide to read you know to expect an exceptional story, great characters that actually talk through problems! And a HEA that makes you swoon.
So, even if sports isn’t your thing, give this a try and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

In this sports romance, a basketball player and a sports commentator become friends off the court and as attraction blooms between them, they fall in love and have to keep it a secret.
The romantic vibes are turned on high, as is the norm for Moody's books. The settings however, bring something else out of her writing. The sports descriptions and some technical details embedded within the story, as well as very credible commentating sequences, bring authenticity and realism to the story.
I am not saying that to disparage her previous books, far from it. I am trying to point out a new direction of style in her writing. Moody writes romance with very little angst, low hurdles, and easy-to-solve conflicts. Her MCs are kind, generous, and lovable. Reading her books is almost like watching a comforting hallmark love story, like eating a whole bowl of mom's best comfort food. This new book, in contrast, doesn't stick to the norm.
Now, don't come in expecting angst and suffering 🙃 oh no. The angst is still on the low side. The MCs are still kind and lovable, and the story still provides the comfort we've learned to expect from a Moody book.
But this book takes it up a notch and elevates the story by bringing it to the real world, closer to the readers.
The conflict is real and is not easily resolved. It requires real sacrifice. There is a side character with negative vibes that triggers the plot in relevant turning points (Yes! Moody has written a character with an evil side! Go read it if you don't believe me).

This new direction evokes a higher level of writing by Moody and I am here for it! I love this and I hope she amps it up in her next books!

This is a great sports romance story. I like the behind the scenes view of a commentator and a basketball player. There is a connection between Nicole and Ariana and having to hide their feelings make for tension and wondering if their secret will be exposed. I always enjoy the love that radiates through Jamey’s stories.

Yes, I finished this in a day. No it was not the best but the last half carried hard. I honestly was skeptical about this book until halfway bc the dialogue was clunky and the characters didn't seem to fit well as live interests. All in all it was an okay to good book. Could be 3 stars idk.

If you love the sappy love stories with a basketball theme you have found the perfect book for just that. In this forbidden love story you have the commentator who should be neutral with her opinions and the player who is stealing her heart. Full of sappy love and some spice to go with it.

Jamey Moody has done it again! This was an incredible story of two women who had, among other things, a love of basketball. It was this love that started to show them how much they really loved each other. It did get a bit dicey due to their professions, but in the end, love finds a way! This was an easy reading story with some steamy scenes (pun intended as there is a shower scene!) Thanks Jamey for another winning book!
