First off - this is the same book as 租来的人生. I think when they went for publication in mainland, they changed the title and actually I really do think that 没有在一起,也好 is a more apt, more poignant choice for this work.
Loved this book, and I wasn't expecting to - I don't often love fiction. But this work was amazing - the sort of book that really struck a chord with me, at least, and had me mulling over the content and the characters and their parallels with people and situations I know of in real life. I can't speak to the quality of the actual writing as I'm not that well versed in Chinese, but as to the topics, the statements that the author makes, and their resonance with what I at least encounter in real life - it's spot on.
At the heart of it, this book is about love and covers it from the viewpoint of 4 different people with different situations in life, different maturity levels, different preferences as to what they want and expect out of a romantic relationship. The title sums it up: sometimes it's ok that you don't end up together.
The heart of it for me, personally, is in the relationship between 李云僧 and 郭素素, and the way that the author was able to so painfully convey the push and pull between duty and desire, the sense of being trapped, the helplessness and hopelessness and desire for denial that colors their whole relationship. That was what really hooked me, because it's so real. It's an Asian thing.
