Rate this book
She escaped her past.
Now it’s hunting her.

Special Agent Elena Rossi built her life on discipline, control, and survival. A brilliant FBI profiler and devoted single mother, she’s learned that trust is a luxury—and love is a risk she can’t afford.

Her partner, Special Agent Zayd Hassan, is everything she refuses to want: calm, relentless, dangerously perceptive… and far too capable of seeing past her carefully constructed walls.

When a string of calculated abductions pulls them into a deadly investigation, Elena and Zayd are forced closer than either is prepared for. Each clue uncovers darker truths, each encounter tightening the tension between duty and desire. But as the case deepens, Elena’s buried past begins to resurface, threatening not only the mission—but the fragile life she’s fought so hard to protect.

In a world where predators hide in plain sight, survival demands more than skill. It demands trust. And trust may cost Elena everything.

A gripping romantic suspense thriller filled with emotional depth, slow-burn tension, high-stakes investigations, and unforgettable chemistry—perfect for fans of FBI crime fiction, strong female leads, and intense slow-burn romance.

Special Agent Elena Rossi has built her life on discipline, control, and survival. As a brilliant FBI profiler and a devoted single mother, she’s learned that trust is a luxury—and love is a risk she can’t afford. Her carefully constructed walls have kept her safe, and she’s determined to maintain them no matter what.

Her partner, Special Agent Zayd Hassan, is everything Elena tells herself she doesn’t want. Calm, relentless, and dangerously perceptive, he has an uncanny ability to see past the barriers she’s spent her life building. From the start, it’s clear that tension—and attraction—will be inevitable.

When a series of calculated abductions draws them into a deadly investigation, Elena and Zayd are forced into close quarters, both professionally and emotionally. Each clue uncovers darker truths, each encounter heightens the tension, and the stakes become as personal as they are dangerous. But while the premise sounded thrilling, I found myself struggling to fully connect with the story.

I was really excited for this book—especially because I’m currently obsessed with Criminal Minds, and the idea of pairing my love for crime procedural stories with a slow-burn romance was so appealing. Unfortunately, it fell a bit flat for me. Both Elena and Zayd are compelling characters individually, and the chemistry between them is evident, but it often felt like the best parts of their dynamic—the slow burn, the tension, the push-and-pull—had already happened off-page before the story even began. Because of that, it was difficult for me to fully engage with their romance as it unfolded in the book.

Another issue I had was the heavy focus on internal monologues, especially in the first third of the story. While it was interesting to get into Elena’s head, I found myself craving more actual interaction between her and Zayd. Dialogue is what really makes a romance feel alive, and with so much reflection and introspection, it sometimes slowed the pacing and diluted the tension I was hoping for.

In the end, while this book had some strong elements—the characters are well-drawn, the premise is solid, and the stakes are high—it just wasn’t the right fit for me. I can see why other readers might enjoy the slow-burn romance and the crime procedural angle, but for me, the pacing and focus on internal monologue kept it from fully landing.

I received an ARC of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

I was intrigued by the premise, but unfortunately the writing style didn’t work for me. The very short sentences made the flow feel quite choppy, and I had trouble getting immersed in the story. I also felt the relationship between the characters was introduced as very established early on, which made it harder for me to connect. I ended up stopping after the first couple of chapters. This may simply come down to personal preference, but it wasn’t the right fit for me.

I really struggled with the writing style of this book. The sentences were extremely short and choppy, many of them only a couple of words long. Instead of pulling me into the story, the constant stop-and-start rhythm made it hard to connect with the characters or the plot. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me and I ended up not finishing the book.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
