Circle of Six: Slaine Part One of Six Some spells are made to be broken.
Urban Fantasy Paranormal Romance Laney Bristlings is destined for great things…or so she’s been told by the demon who killed her. So far that greatness includes an unclear future, the responsibility of four power-wielding half-sisters abandoned by a deadbeat father, and a manufacturing job in Kansas. Not exactly the life prophecies are made of. Danger threatens and she’ll protect her family at all costs, but when a handsome stranger comes to steal her away who is going to save Laney?
Slaine is a six part serial. This is not a standalone title. For a detailed release schedule or more information, visit the author's page.
This series started out with a bang...death, taking in half sisters, being kidnapped. It makes one wonder what's going to happen next. Especially with more 16 year old sisters on the way.
So being told by a stranger on your sixteenth birthday that you have half sisters that will find you when you are reborn you would naturally just think they are nuts. Turns out not so much. Reborn in the whole put on a choking necklace, quite literally, and dying to be reborn sort of thing. But before the whole choking situation being reminded of her deadbeat dad who left when Laney was six and that each six years from now her half sisters would find her, compelled to do so without knowing why.
Great set up into the world for present day. Seems the half sister thing was true and each six years a set of twins shows up. Each of them having some form of paranormal ability — seemingly immortal, healer, fire starter, and so on. Though none really know what they are meant to be doing with their gifts. They don't know if they are meant for good or evil but the whole 666 comes into play with the dates of their births. They know other paranormals are out there — daemons — but try to keep to themselves unless provoked to protect themselves.
Seems the sisters are part of a bigger prophecy but don't know all the facts. This is where Nicholas comes in. Laney felt a darkness outside their home and found herself faced with a strange beast dog and someone who knows more about her life — and the prophecy — than she does. He needs answers as much as she does but doesn't just ask, no he kidnaps her. He might seem like a protector but I think thats only for his people. He watched Laney for years trying to figure her out and let's just say temptation was too strong. Bit uncomfortable to read and I have a feeling when Laney is more aware of things a punch in the face is going to be needed.
Interesting set up for the world, what paranormal daemons are around and what the prophecy could mean. The sisters all feel very unique even though we don't learn too much about them. Nicholas will be tricky to get a feel for with how it ends but it’s more of a set up for the rest of the series. Not bad for a free read.
Love it when I get a unique paranormal world and an author can make me curious with a good mystery, too.
This first part of a serial story begins on a surprising prologue to introduce the heroine, Slaine, who thought she was an average teen girl until an old guy gave her a story that she was part of some prophecy, that she had to die to fulfill her potential and that half-sisters would come along every six years to find her. Weird, right? Slaine thought until it happened.
She and her sisters are now figuring their supernatural status out as they go in a world full of many unhuman races. Oh, and someone is tracking them. Slaine is tired of protecting and not knowing things. Then one night a mysterious being takes her captive.
Nicholas knows the prophecy about Slaine and her sisters. They are bred to do evil, but they haven't acted. They've practically lived as humans. He needs Slaine's help, but he is fearful that she is evil. Now she's his captive. Or is it the other way around?
This first part ended on a hot passionate note of suspense. I am definitely intrigued by the unique supernaturals that Slaine, her sisters and Nicholas are. I can't wait to see what happens next. I like Slaine and her narrative voice. Her sisters seem fun in all their quirky ways. Yep, need to get the next installment.
This is a really great story. It is the beginning of a series, but I liked where it ended. Most of the story is getting to know the heroine's personality and history and I really liked her as a person. She is one of seven half-sisters who are murdered by someone who claims to be their grandfather when they each reach the age of 16. Horrible! But, then then live on, and find each other (they didn't grow up together). They have powers, but don't use them much. They are very close and trying to live as normal a life as possible, even though supernatural beings sometimes try to kill them. Up until the time of the story they have mostly had a live and let live attitude, unless something is trying to hurt them, at which point they work together to take them out and then move their lives to another city to seek anonymity again. They are lovely, warm and likeable. Towards the end of the story we meet the hero, who is an unusual and cool supernatural being I have never heard about before. He knows more about the girls than they know. He is also good looking, and seems quite likeable, but the heroine sure is going to be mad at him when she wakes up.
Review to come: I just wanted to get my numbers for the year updated but fighting the flu and not in my right mind. Lol, anyway review to come!
This was a quick read but it did not have a lot of substance to it. We were just getting basically some background. Hardly anything happened in the story probably won't read more.
I didn't like this book at all but it wasn't because it was a bad story. It's because it just wasn't my kind of reading. The author is talented and the story line is strong with apparently good characters.
