Pykett conducts a useful overview of the genre of sensation and its antecedents. She's especially skillful at connecting sensation to its melodramatic descendants in our current age, alluding to Radway's study of romance novels and their readers.

To be fair, this was more of a "skim until I come upon something I need to use for my paper." I did think it's a good introduction to the genre.
