Parents with teens— a must read — for you AND them
Beautifully written and deeply moving, Escaping Sailor Byrd proves that healing from a broken heart is possible, especially when we let the people who love us in.
Dorothy Deene writes with such grace and honesty, shedding light on topics we often avoid: grief, trauma, and the quiet ache of losing not only someone you love, but pieces of yourself along the way. Writing about these things isn’t easy, but Deene does it with bravery, clarity, and compassion.
Sailor Byrd’s journey through grief is tender and raw. At seventeen, she isn’t just mourning the loss of her sister—she’s mourning who she used to be. The story captures that familiar in-between space—the blurry line between childhood and adulthood—when we’re desperate to have our freedom, to blaze our own path, convinced that the magic number eighteen will unlock all the answers… only to learn that life doesn’t work that way.
Escaping Sailor Byrd wasn’t just another book to check off my TBR list. I felt something—truly felt it in the most literal sense.
4/5 STARS! This book manages to capture grief perfectly! It’s emotional and very relatable to older teens. It deals with a lot of serious issues & is very relatable. Not only does it capture grieving a sibling, but it also deals with outgrowing friends, turning to drugs, & exploring sexuality too. Very good read! Sailor is a character that could be your friend which makes it even more meaningful.
This story was heart wrenching. Sailor’s journey through a terrible loss and sadness and grief had me wanting to be there for her! Deene’s realism and imagery is spot on and deep. This story is so emotionally gripping and still manages to offer hope. Would highly recommend.
