Shades of Onyx

Rate this book
Medusa’s story didn’t end. It went on, and on and on… Now her time is up.

The gorgon of mythical infamy now goes by Onyx; the latest in a long line of reincarnations. She gets by, avoiding attachments that make immortality more unbearable. She wouldn’t have chosen this life. But gods have never cared what she wanted, not even the ones who saved her from Athena’s wrath. Now, sinister whispers about the vengeful goddess and a sudden change in circumstances have Onyx spooked. Perhaps, if she tracks down something Athena wants, she can earn a reprieve.

Blake Mihara’s research skills are important, but so is the way they look at Onyx. She should be focused on the task at hand, not how they make her feel after centuries of loneliness. When they both end up stuck in the Underworld, Onyx’s choices narrow to almost nothing. The Goddess of War wants to kill her, and now the Lord of the Dead wants to keep her. But with Blake stubbornly at her side, hope isn’t entirely lost. Maybe there’s a way out of this hell.

The question is, which one? The one inflicted on Onyx, or the one she inflicted on herself?

Shades of Onyx is a single POV, sapphic romance containing reimagined elements of various Greek and Roman mythologies—it is not a retelling. There are content warnings in the book and at the author's website.

Shades of Onyx by TJ Williams is a queer telling of Medusa as you've never read before. This amalgamation of mythology begins in contemporary London but doesn't stop there. The story features flashbacks to Medusa's youth, and magical travels around the world, including the Underworld.
TJ Williams spins a well-thought-out, complex, and especially creative tale that delves deep into complex trauma. Onyx and Blake are strong, brave, and layered characters who balance one another well.
I love the writing style. It is approachable and intelligent, with great imagery but not overly flowery. I was immediately engaged. The pace felt a bit slow in the middle, but the plot was suspenseful and exciting, and it kept me reading.
Onyx is a woman of color and a plus-sized, part-time model and barista. She has been reincarnated for 3,000 years and is holding onto multiple lifetimes of trauma. The gods re-enter her life just as she meets Blake, who surprisingly chips away at her protective walls.
Blake, a non-binary anthropology student, finds themself thrown into an impossible situation with their new friend Onyx as they experience an immediate attraction and overwhelming need to care for her. Having worked through their own mental health issues, they are in a strong, stable emotional state to provide much-needed support for Onyx as Onyx's world implodes.

Quoteworthy:
"...her pain demanded to be felt. It hadn’t had a name until recently, and in this century, it was called trauma."

"It lived on in her bones, in her soul."

Several well-done steamy scenes featuring explicit consent, clear communication, and mutual respect. They demonstrate the growing closeness and vulnerability between Onyx and Blake, as well as the relationship dynamics, including their sub/domme inclinations.
This was a very good read, particularly because it helped me better understand the experiences of women of color and non-binary individuals. The mix of mythological tales and the variety of gods and goddesses was also quite fun.
Heed trigger warnings, as this can be quite dark.

This is my second TJ Williams book and it will not be my last! There is something so captivating about the way that TJ writes their characters; there is a depth and relatability that drew me in from the start. I instantly felt for the nuanced and complex feelings that Onyx was carrying and I think the opener was a really visceral introduction to a lot of Onyx’s feelings. As the story builds and we uncover more and more about Onyx’s history and how/why Medusa is still alive, there is a real true-to-form Greek tragedy aspect to the story that I was excited to explore. There is a conversation here about connection and community that we are all drawn to and seeing Onyx really confront her issues and past was so rewarding. Especially when it came to her relationship with Blake. Blake was a really cool character to add to the narrative, with their own draw to history as well as their confidence and acceptance of self, Blake was such an important character to the story.
The relationship between Onyx and Blake was a bright light in this novel. Seeing them navigate such complicated circumstances and work through communication and interpersonal issues as well as coming to really understand and respect one another was such a highlight. Their dynamic–and even how they approach and navigate their sexual relationship–was written with so much care and intention.

While written within a fantasy/paranormal setting, this book is very human and grounded. And TJ does a really good job navigating the main plot (running from Athena) with the character and relational depth and development. There is also an interesting layer to the story that involves the relationship with Greek gods and how unknowable and unpredictable they (and their choices) can be. With that said, there were a few subplots that I expected to get a more complete resolution. And while part of me understands that the way that we perceive time and experiences varies a lot from the gods, I was surprised with some of the more simple resolutions and wanted to see them built out more (as well as a more rounded emotional response).

At its heart, this story really feels like it is having a conversation about the value and importance of connection and relationships. While addressing loss and trauma woven within a fantastical story, I think the overall approach to this is really well done. There is something so real about these characters and seeing them interact, grow, learn and heal throughout the book made this such a rewarding reading experience that I think many people can and will enjoy.

This is not your average retelling, in fact it's not really a retelling, more of a new viewpoint that borrows characters from old Greek and Roman mythology.

Medusa is not really dead, she's reincarnated throughout time and doing her best to hide from the gods who damned her. She's a bit of a lothario. She tends to love them and leave them, not to get too attached.

This epic tale weaves in an adventure that takes you through time and across Europe. The gods show their disdain for humanity, her they can't help but interact and occasionally help but mostly make trouble.

I really enjoyed this take, Medusa/ Onyx, is given more of a backstory and you empathize with her plight. As she looks to solve her problem, Onyx meets up with Blake. They are the perfect nonbinary studious counterpart. Blake is patient and kind and helps to guide Onyx with a firm hand. Their attraction is immediate but their falling for each other's is revealed throughout this epic journey quest that they're on. I enjoyed this tale, it's smart and different and really fun.

Tropes and triggers: Roman and Greek mythology, revenge, touch her and ☠️, found family, ancient magic, murder mystery, vengeance, retelling.

4.25/5 stars ✨ t.j. delivers a beautifully and skillfully written singular pov medusa reimagining that both infuriated me (because men and gods alike deserve ✨nothing✨) and felt like a warm, queer hug. i adored the writing, the descriptiveness of onyx/medusa's past, present, emotional state(s), the scenery and literally everything else. i really loved how though this was a single POV, i was never left wondering about blake's feelings or emotions. i did want a bit more from the conflict with athena, but aside from that, i loved all of this! blake has definitely gone down as a book bae. ✍🏽🙂‍↕️ the epilogue? 🥵🌶️

Oh my goodness! When I started this book, I was immediately pulled in by the writing. I loved everything about this book. I loved the world building, the reimagining of Medusa, I loved how the author chose to manifest the powers of the Hellenic Gods. The way Onyx reincarnate too was so clever. I loved the little glimpses into the magic system, they were PERFECT.

I loved Onyx and Blake’s relationship. I love how determined Blake was to be there for Onyx, despite Onyx’s determination to push them away to protect them. Blake was just an incredible character, we all need a Blake in our lives.

I also loved Athena’s characterisation in this whole book, it was so excellent pulled off.

I wish I could erase this book from my brain and just start over, so I can appreciate it all over again.

New to me author but one I have seen talked about in so many spaces, so I was so excited to receive this ARC copy!

I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more by the author soon.

Super important to note this is a myth reimagining so many of the characters we know from Greek mythology and the world it self is not how it is brought to life in the book. Scroll back and read the author’s note that gives insight into this. I personally liked the changes made (I’m no expert of the original story) and it made perfect sense for the world Onyx lives in.

The romance side of this one also hit perfectly for me. I had no idea the love interest was part Japanese until I started reading which got me very excited. Asian representation in Sapphic books is still very uncommon so seeing my ethnicity featured out in the wild warmed my heart. Their relationship is more of a slow burn and the intimacy is built throughout in small moments of connection that build up naturally. The communication between the two when it comes to intimacy was also very exciting to see built into a fantasy leaning story.

I was left wanting more, I hope to see more books like this as I really enjoyed it.

- Myth of Medusa reimagined
- Rep: pansexual, non-binary trans masc love interest who is mixed race black/asian(asian side mentioned as Japanese and also ethnic), endometriosis experience as an NB, open door 🌶️ with consent talk about expectations/needs in the bedroom
- paranormal setting in London and the underworld
- CW: it is a reimagining of the myth so if you come in with a deep understanding of Greek mythology it may surprise you, make sure to read the author’s note before diving in. Very real on the topics of struggles as humans, medical, mental, homophobia in general over the years both from humans and mythical beings. The pansexual side is shared in detail with a toxic ex boyfriend dynamic. Homophobic/set in their minds Asian families on the love interest side.

Shades of Onyx is a Medusa/ Olympian/ Greek mythology inspired story that reimagines Medusa as a still alive reincarnating somewhat listless being. She is so guarded because of past trauma that she is stuck in the rut of life.

This book started off a bit slow for me, largely due to me not realizing I didn’t know as much about Medusa/ Olympian/ Greek mythology as I thought I did.

The criticisms of the cruelty and fickleness of the Gods was great.

I loved that this romance book hit on a lot of more important topics (check triggers warnings!) while still keeping it light and not going too in depth.

Speaking of, the romance in this? YUM. The spice especially was phenomenal and hot as hell, once we got to it. I loved the care and chemistry these characters had for each other, and felt invested in their journey.

This is one of the first books I’ve read where as I thought “we have time for this?” the main character acknowledges the same thing LOL, which was a plus for me.

My biggest critique of this work would be that it needed some editing that I think would’ve aided the plot and storyline. There was a little too many plot points and story elements going on that got repetitive, especially in the beginning. All that being said, this is also an independently published book that I still throughly enjoyed.

I can’t wait to read more of Williams’ work.

The last time I saw an ARC application for a book by T.J. Williams, I had missed the closing date by one day so when I saw the application for Shades of Onyx go live and read the overview of the book, I knew I’d do just about anything to obtain it and I don’t regret it one bit.

My mom is a huge mythology geek so I’ve grown up listening to the stories but the spin that T.J. Williams put on the story of Medusa, whom I’ve always felt connected to, was incredible. To have Medusa, know as Onyx on her current life, reincarnate forever and to, unfortunately, keep to herself because she learned from her original life that you can’t trust anyone and you can’t hurt if you’re alone, broke my heart in a million pieces. Even spared from her fate in the underworld, she was living in constant torture. Once again, a woman paying dearly for the mistakes of a man. Then in comes Blake, someone who understands Onyx on a deep level, without even needing words to communicate, it felt like soulmates meeting. They were willing to face everything and anything for Onyx and I fear that may have made me fall in love with them.

“If there’s one thing women can bond over, it’s the downfall of men.”
That line alone should make you want to give this reimagining of the story of Medusa a chance. You won’t regret it.

Thank you to T.J. Williams for providing me with an eARC.

hello! I am leaving an honest review for this book after receiving an advanced reader copy

So I decided to read this book and give it a chance as TJ Williams is a lovely person and I wanted to support them

I am DNFing this book due to personal conflicting feelings around how the author decided to depict the Hellenic Gods about half way through chapter two

The decision to have Aphrodite CHOOSE to depict herself with Nordic beauty standards of blonde hair and blue eyes bothered me. Aphrodite has origins in the middle east stemming with the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar. this feels incredibly ahistorical. The choice to also depict Aphrodite as catty and concerned about a war goddess' wrath coming for her "pretty little neck" BOTHERED me. Aphrodite is a war goddess in her own right and her domain over 'love' is as brutal as it is lovely. She is a verifiable threat

also calling Athena 'deranged' was... interesting. ATHENA??? the grey-eyed goddess of war and wisdom? okay 😭

but the deities aside, TJ Williams made a very lovely main character. I really liked Onyx from the moment she was introduced. I liked her frankness and that she was plus sized and a model who was comfortable in her own skin and her own sexuality

the pacing was kinda fast imo but was fun and the writing was very smooth!! I am very sure if I wasnt as sensitive to depictions of Greek Mythology as I am, I would love this book. unfortunately its just not for me

This book is so enthralling. I just finished it at 7:15 AM because I just couldn’t put it down until I finished. I love a good Medusa retailing, but the addition of her being a fat black woman with a little well-earned mental instability made this so much more impactful. I couldn’t help but root for Onyx from the very beginning and particularly loved the flashbacks that were interwoven throughout the regular chapters. This book is Black. It’s neurodivergent. It’s inclusive. It’s queer. It’s intense. And it is unapologetic. This is a must read for any lover of Greek mythology and/or black culture alike. I received this book directly from the author (whom I found on Threads and now adore!) and this is my honest review. 4.75 stars!

Thanks to the author for the ARC!

What if Medusa didn't die? Shades of Onyx introduces us to a Medusa who now goes by Onyx and has repeatedly been reincarnated over the last few millennia. Athena discovers Onyx (i.e. Medusa) is still alive and the book follows Onyx trying to deal with this and save herself. This isn't a Medusa retelling, instead taking elements from various iterations of Medusa and the other gods and goddesses to put together a present day story with a black, queer, plus-sized Medusa going by a different name.

I loved this book! I've read a couple of amazing Medusa retellings and was intrigued by this book while also knowing it wasn't intended as a proper retelling. It was fun to recognise various elements of the story, different gods/goddesses while seeing them in a new and original story. It was also so cool to see her as a black, queer, plus-sized woman! Along with these elements of representation, the book also contained chronic illness and non-binary representation. All of this made me incredibly happy and I really felt it was done so well. I'm queer, non-binary and disabled/chronically ill so I'm always excited when any of those elements are done well, let alone multiples in the one book! While elements of the story at times might have been a little predictable, there wasn't anything wrong with that in my opinion. I still thoroughly enjoyed reading it and struggled to put it down as I wanted to see how it all played out! And there were definitely some parts of the story I didn't see coming so loved and was surprised by that! It was a fun read while also tackling some more serious topics with respect and care.

Seeing Medusa as Onyx was so fascinating. Onyx was such a layered character, she had so much depth. Her character really did feel so believable if you were going to envision a repeatedly reincarnated version of Medusa in this context. We watch her grapple with the aftermath of her trauma and the scars she was left with. Anyone who's been through trauma will probably find some element of Onyx will resonate with them. Blake was such a beautiful character, I absolutely adored them. There were some surprising parts of their character that I thoroughly enjoyed and I loved their version of non-binary. The few others in Onyx's life came across as loveable and endearing and I also really enjoyed the iterations of the various gods and goddesses. The author did a great job at building their story using logical/believable gods and goddesses and fitting them into relevant roles that contextually made sense.

Overall, I genuinely really enjoyed reading Shades of Onyx and will definitely be recommending it to others whenever I get the chance!

Shades of Onyx is a sapphic paranormal romance influenced by Medusa mythology and the reading experience is like wading into a cold pool of water on a hot and humid day. Onyx is the FMC healing from trauma and Blake is the cinnamon roll XMC, and there are light sub/dom dynamics. Onyx navigates trauma and I describe her pain, panic, and past to the ever-present heaviness of heat and humidity, while the way she discusses and finds her way through her insecurities, her panic, is like cool, soothing water.

The story is set in the modern day, so there’s a balance of life in the city and the mythological elements.

I love how Blake and Onyx slowly get to know each other, and Blake’s sincerity as a friend who is also clearly attracted to Onyx, and their deeper development. The representation of BIPOC and queer leads and one of them being genderqueer is amazing in this story. It makes me so happy just as I appreciate the representation in Williams’s first book, Tethered.

Remember to check the content warnings as the story discusses grooming and I admire the conversations about this in the book. The plot is well-paced and we see a solid amount of one setting before moving to the next. I love that we go on a journey with Onyx and Blake and watching them support each other. The scenes in which Onyx goes through difficulties relating to her past feel realistic and my heart warms knowing readers will treasure this story, and tenfold if they experience things like Onyx has.

This story wonderfully hits the mark of paranormal romance. I’m grateful that TJ Williams brings thoughtful perspective to Medusa mythology with great care, shows what it’s like to deal with panic and trauma, and writes a delightfully sweet relationship.

I’m familiar with Medusa’s story and after I finished the book, there is a contentment that washes over me. If you know her mythology, you probably get angry at the injustice and harm done to Medusa, and the book goes above and beyond to show how there is remarkable strength in not just surviving, but living and enjoying the little moments, and how Onyx built herself up, how she is always worthy of being loved no matter how weak she feels. I admire how we see her moments of rain and sunshine.

You need this sapphic paranormal romance.

These are my words and opinions of an ARC that I was gifted. This is not a Medusa retelling but rather a re-imagining. I really do appreciate that the author explained what their readers would be reading and expecting because they want you to prioritize your mental health.

Medusa is a gorgon that has been living her immortal life through re-incarnation. All while avoiding love and connecting with others as she suffers through anxiety and flashbacks of her trauma filled past. Medusa’s current re-incarnated self goes by Onyx and she aspires to be a coffee barista and a part time model. However, a sudden visit from Aphrodite brings news that something or other someone has changed all that for Onyx because she is no longer immortal. Racing to find something to appease Athena, Onyx finally realizes she is no longer attached to endless meaningless life and can actually live and experience real life and death for the first and last time! And then Onyx meets Blake Mihara, and she can’t deny her feelings any longer. All while they find themselves stuck in the Underworld with a Goddess wanting to kill Onyx.

I was not able to read this book in one setting. The anxiety, the flashbacks, and raw feelings due to the traumatic grooming felt very real and I needed some mental breaks. However, the author did a fantastic job showing readers how grooming can take place with different types of people who have an influences on your life. Also, how powerful people can take advantage of others because they know they won’t be held responsible for their actions. Yes I did I continue reading, and for me this was truly a unique re-imagining that absolutely needed to be told. I loved this story and its originality overall! It had easily digestible world building with a plot I didn’t see coming and spice that was just right. I didn’t have to be heavy on the knowledge of Greek mythology and I really appreciated that the author had queer, disabled, and BIPOC rep in this story because I need all my stories like this. This was an easy 5 star read for me and I am looking forward to more books by this author!

Medusa has been reincarnated so many times and after awhile she stated detaching herself from people as to protect herself from being hurt. She will get reincarnated but her friends, family, lovers will not. Everything changes when someone has cut Medusa thread and this life, will be her last life. However, Athena is after her.

This story didn't grip me in immediately during the story setup, but once we got to see Onyx meetup with her friend Willow the story starts to become more compelling. When Onyx meets Blake whose going to help her research Athena, I was very happy. Blake was great, I love their character and how it progressed the story. Blake was a wonderful addition and the person Onyx really needed, despite her not wanting to build attachments.

I loved the Underworld, the fact they actually went and the journey that got them to Hades. It was super interesting and one of my favorite parts. I liked the way that section of the journey went and the learning of how much time had passed was done so well because it allowed Blake and Onyx to build that relationship!

𝑰'𝒎 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒎𝒚𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑰 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒆, 𝑰 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕'𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒐 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆. 𝑰 𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒑𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒇𝒇, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚.

I totally get why Onyx wants to keep Blake safe and doesn't want to build those attachments but after awhile reading those thoughts became a bit repetitive, for me.

The conclusion was nice. I don't know how Onyx didn't figure out that twist herself lol but it all resolved well and the epilogue was very nice!

⚠️ This is an ARC review of “Shades of Onyx” by TJ Williams.

First I want to thank TJ Williams for the wonderful opportunity to receive the advance reader copy of “Shades of Onyx”.

What if Medusa never died? What if Medusa lived…again and again and again? In this fantastic mythology reimagining, Medusa is reincarnated throughout many lifetimes as she outruns a past that feels as though it has inevitably begun to catch up to her. In this reincarnation we meet Onyx, our main character for this book, as she navigates new romance with Blake, a Black and Asian, pansexual, nonbinary, as a Black, queer, and plus-sized woman all the while past becomes present.

TJ Williams does an incredible job of not only handling sensitive topics with the kind of care it deserves but also uplifting diverse voices in a beautiful mythological world where all the rules are bent. These characters are flawed, perfect in their imperfection, and in that I felt truly seen. For many reasons, there were parts of this that felt uncomfortable to read but truly in the best way possible. It made me sit and think. There were times I stepped away from this book to really analyze why scenes made me feel the way I did and there is nothing quite like a book that really gets its claws into you like that. It’s magic.

While the mythology of this book remains a major plot point, the romance between Blake (our lovely nonbinary romantic prospect) and Onyx is blended in seamlessly to create a perfect slow burn that hooks you from the very moment the two characters meet. The conversations between both characters were wonderfully respectful and incredibly sexy. Hello? The kiss? I LOVE YOU BLAKE!

🐍 Black FMC x Black/Asian XMC
🖤 Reincarnation
🐍 Lesbian femme x nonbinary pansexual
🖤 Myth reimagining
🐍 Paranormal romance
🖤 Light kink dynamics (dom/sub)

All this to say…another five star read written by TJ Williams yet again. (Just take my credit card).

I received Shades of Onyx as a free review copy from the author, TJ Williams.
I want to start off by saying I really enjoyed this! I’ve always found mythology interesting so it was a cool aspect of the story that I enjoyed and it was refreshing to read of Medusa being reincarnated into a person of color. I found the physical manifestation of Aphrodite (or any of the gods/titans/etc.) intriguing and vivid; including the physical effects from being in her presence. Williams does a good job of making the gods almost insufferable too, they pissed me off multiple times.
And oh the gender fuckery of it all. Love love love the bipoc nonbinary representation as someone who identifies as such. When Blake said “…but it turned out I’m a pansexual with gender envy,” I felt that. I connected to all the descriptions of juxtaposition in Blake, in the sense that an integral aspect of my nonbinary identity is being multifaceted and as Williams says of Blake: Always a study of opposites.
Also I appreciate the acknowledgment of platonic love being just as important, if not more, than romantic love. Even though it is a brief mention, I think it says a lot that it was mentioned at all because you can’t always expect that from a story of romance. Onyx and Blake are gonna be characters I will think back on fondly and this book makes me want to read about what other adventures they could go on together.
Overall it was compelling, relatable and my kinda spicy.

I need Book 2 immediately! Shades of Onyx grabbed me from the very beginning and completely locked me in. I knew early on this was a definitive 5-star read.

The take on the Medusa myth is incredibly fresh, creative, and deeply empowering. The plot is fantastic and keeps you entirely hooked, constantly wondering how the main characters are going to survive the absolute chaos the gods throw at them.

Speaking of the characters—they are phenomenally well-developed. Blake has this magnetic, protective, dominant energy that completely steals the show (Blake literally deserves the world, period). Onyx is a wonderfully complex protagonist; she has a lot of trauma to untangle, which makes her actions and her growth feel incredibly raw and real.

You will get so fiercely invested in these characters that you will want to scream at the pages.

My only real critique is that I felt a bit perturbed by a specific comment hades made regarding Jesus, as well as how frequently Jesus's name was used throughout the book. Even in fiction, I think there is a way to maintain the story's world-building while being inclusive and respectful of other people's religious beliefs.

Such a brilliant ARC. I am completely obsessed and need the next book right now!

🌟2.5🌟 my rating for this book isn’t indicative of the book being bad, but rather my personal inability to truly connect with it due to its narrative and content.

unfortunately, from my perspective, i believe that to really connect with the story you’d have to know at least a bit about Greek mythology in order to understand the characters and what’s going on - although the author does provide some context as to some characters’ identities and backstory. i know virtually nothing about mythology, so i was rather confused about who the characters were as well as their relationships with one another and the general narrative at hand.

the romance aspect between the MCs was quite sweet, and in true lesbian/sapphic fashion it moved incredibly quickly which made me question how strong their relationship was despite all they’d been through in the story - it felt more like they were bonded with one another via their shared trauma of the story’s events rather than any true love for each other. however, this doesn’t take away from the generally sweet nature of their dynamic as well as the tender care they provided one another.

as much as this wasn’t my favourite Williams read, i still did enjoy it in terms of the romance between the MCs and i’d definitely recommend it to those who enjoy fantasy and magical books.

How Medusa got her groove back but make it GAY!

You will absolutely fall in love with this reimagining of the Medusa mythology. The characters are so relatable and accessible it sucks you into her world from the first chapter.

The curiosity Tj evokes about this world, how it works, and where this adventure is headed will have you turning pages with a ferocity that Athena herself would be proud of.

Blake is possibly the SEXIEST nonbinary person I've gotten to read about yet . Their style, the way they carry themselves, the unwavering kindness, their stoic strength, and the spice...well that is just a chefs kiss all on its own.

Witnessing the unfolding of Onyx’s traumas and history, as the story progresses will have you staunchly on team Blanyx (Blake+Onyx). While leaving you in a love hate relationship with the rest of the pantheon.

I’m not sure i’ll be able to properly convey what it means to see a plus sized main character who knows she’s beautiful and sexy. It felt natural that Onyx be a dark skinned Black woman in this circumstance as well, as Black women own their sexuality and beauty like no other.

TJ’s writing whimsically enrapturing, the use and twisting of the mythos will have you pulling out all your Greek mythology books. I look forward to reading more of Tj’s work and whatever they have coming next!

This is a really unique twist on Greek mythology, Williams makes it crystal clear in the authors note at the beginning of the book that this isn't going to be lore accurate. This is their take of a fantasy with their interpretation and wants for their own characters. I'm a follower of Hekate, I have an alter to her and wear her sigil 24/7, but I also have the ability to know that this book is a fictional fantasy and could still enjoy Williams interpretation of both Hekate and the Greek Gods.

Going into the book, knowing this made this an enjoyable read. The characters are well thought out and come with nuance and depth. Onyx is very relatable even if she is thousands of years old and a gorgon 😂 I was extremely invested in both her and Blakes relationship.

I loved the humour that came in the writing, Hermes calling Blake boy/girl caused me to cackle. He was actually one of my favourite gods, and his personality fit my idea of him to a tee. The idea of Hades wearing jeans was also really amusing to me. I loved how the humour balanced alongside the darker themes and heavy topics well. Again, it helped with the depth that Williams conveyed throughout the whole book.

Thank you for the ARC, I wish Williams so much success and suggest you all add this to your tbrs!

The ultimate test of true love? Drag your partner through hell and back, and see if they stick around.

Shades of Onyx was a fun reimagination set in the modern world with some of the most beloved/detested Greek gods.

As a Medusa reincarnate, Onyx carries the burdens of her past, which led her to keep people out. This one started a little slow, with Onyx's messy life taking the center stage. The only character I felt for in the initial chapters was her hapless roommate, Terri.

But give it time, and Shades of Onyx will overdeliver, with a vibrant Underworld, mysterious and oftentimes humorous side characters, and gods who bring depth to the story and more.

Blake, the love interest who gets dragged through the Underworld, is the ultimate green flag. Through their initial chemistry, which felt a little shaky, Blake brings an interesting dynamic, constantly forcing Onyx out of her comfort zone.

I like how the author had the gods struggling to gender label Blake instead of positioning them as all-knowing, and the responses from both Blake and Onyx were apt too.

Overall, if you're looking for a positive, character-led, spicy paranormal romance with strong representation and emotional healing, add Shades of Onyx to your TBR!

4.5 stars! What a fascinating story that T.J Williams has woven. Onyx has lived millennia: many lives, many bodies, many minds, but always the memories of the original life that was hers. The life that caused her to enter this cycle and a name that she no longee goes by, Medusa. Not the story as we know it now, but the one of a greedy man twisting the love of a young Gorgon girl, punished by an Olympian God, and now being hunted for being hidden by those that had taken pity on her.

Onyx is a mess and I loved her for it. She is terrified to let anyone in, least the Gods find her and punish anyone she loves. She has millennia of memories in her head, memories of her previous lives that would drive most people insane, yet she compartmentalizes them like a pro. Now that her thread has been snipped and the Olympian that cursed her is hunting her, can she find the courage to live her life for the first time, rather than just existing.
Such a beautiful, complicated, wonderful story the author wove for me to read. I loved the depth of characters and the suffering she endures, but also of acceptance and understanding in those around Onyx when given a chance.

If you are looking for a slow burn, sapphic paranormal romance then this may be for you!

-Greek mythology; Aphrodite, Poseidon, Athena, Hades, etc
-1 POV
-reincarnation
-lesbian, thick bodied fem FMC
-blasian, nonbinary XMC
-healing from trauma
-light dom/sub dynamics
-cinnamon roll XMC
-vivid, blush worthy spice
-found family
-endometriosis representation
-written in British English
-beautifully written
-solid conclusion
-under 400 pages

There was a lot to enjoy with this.
The nonbinary love interest, Blake, was easily my favorite character. They were lovable, relatable, honest & unwavering in a way that balanced the storylines heavier topics effortlessly.

This was unapologetically Black and queer. The concept was solid and executed in a way that kept me engaged. Reading this felt like binge watching a TV show. Every time I picked this book back up I was watching a brand new episode.

I do not think that you need to know about the Gods/Goddesses prior to reading. But, if you are already a lover of Medusa & adjacent people then, this is definitely up your alley.

This was my 1st book from the author and it won’t be my last.

Greek mythology nerds UNITE because this sapphic mythology inspired tale is SO GOOD. (but make sure you read the author's note because it's not gonna be 100% true to what you know).

I adored TJ's debut was so was so excited to get my grubby lil hands on this one and it was everything I wanted and more. Onyx was just such a FANTASTIC main character. I'm usually someone who likes to spend time in multiple people's heads in my books, but Onyx was so rich of a character that I felt like I did not need to see it from any one else's POV to get the whole story.

Because it's not a "traditional" greek mythology retelling, TJ was able to provide so much just extremely lush worldbuilding that kept me flipping pages wanting to know what was coming next (and which familiar page would pop up). There were times when I laughed out loud, and like I'm me, so I did shed tears (lol), and there were times where I NEEDED to know what was coming. I loved Blake too. They were such a great counterpart to Onyx. The way they worked together and wove their lives together was just beautiful and amazing and AH I loved this story!

This book is really something special. I’m always excited to read fantasy full of diverse characters and William’s writing shines bright.

This book is fun and kinky and gloriously queer but it’s also deep and difficult and it challenges so many real life notions through these fantastical gods and the people whose lives they mess with. I cried and I laughed and I kicked my feet with giddiness.

Onyx is incredible. To have made a woman of such mythical renown (Medusa) into this lovable, fallible, human who you want to strangle and also hug so tight, you put her back together, is a testament to the author’s skill.

Blake is either my dream partner or my dream version of myself? I can’t tell from one page to the other. They are wonderful. Seeing a non-binary love interest and the way everyone around them validated them, even gods, was so heart warming and healing.

This story will be in my heart and on my mind for a long, long time.

Thank you to the author for the honor of receiving an ARC.

I’m a Book Girlie who loves to read great fiction. I’m not a professional book reviewer, I only play one on the internet. I received Shades of Onyx as a free review copy from the author. This is my honest review.

I have to begin by writing that TJ Williams is my new favorite author. Such a talented writer and storyteller! Shades of Onyx is a reimagined telling of Greek mythology, but you don’t have to know anything about Greek mythology to enjoy this book. Don’t skip the author notes in the beginning to ensure you are prepared for the story. It was enjoyable to have a main character Onyx who is Black, plus size, who knows she is sexy and desirable. The slow burn relationship between her and Blake had the right amount of tension and the spicy parts were hot. Onyx’s world was unapologetically Queer, Black, and diverse without over-explaining. I appreciated that mirror of my real life.

I recommend this book to everyone, especially if you love sapphic romance, sly humor, diverse representation devoid of tokenism, examples of the healing power of romantic and platonic love.

Thank you to author TJ Williams for giving me the opportunity to read her book in exchange for an honest review!
I want to start of by saying that this book was not bad by any means, I just think it wasn't for me. I loved the endo rep, body diversity, enby rep, and it was really cool to read a fantasy with a black main character. That being said, I think I would have enjoyed the story a bit better had I known more about Greek mythology going in, so if that's your thing you will totally love this! My only complaint was that the story only really focused on her lives as Onyx and Medusa, which was fine, but in a reincarnation story I kind've expected to learn a bit about her other lives as well given that she's been reincarnated so many times between now and then.
Anyways, if you love greek mythology and sapphic romance with a black mc I think you would really enjoy this!

An exploration of the paranormal possibility of Medusa reincarnating after her brutal demise, Shades of Onyx is a captivating sapphic romance that keeps the reader engrossed with a layered plot and a black cat x golden retriever dynamic.

From found family and supportive friendships, representation including gender expansive identities and disabilities, to grief and loss, author TJ Williams has written a solid standalone deserving of praise.

Artistic liberty surrounding the portrayal of the gods helped shape the story in a unique way and offered social commentary. Escaping a vengeful god, navigating the underworld, and facing mortality paired with vivid world-building and cinematic magic scenes made this an unforgettable read.

I recieved this as an ARC and absolutely loved it. I look forward to reading what Williams writes next!

I received an advance copy of this book and I just wanna start off by saying it was sooo well written!!!

It did take me a little while to get into it solely because I’ve never been into Greek Mythology, but I wanted to give this book a chance and I’m sooo glad I did.
As someone who had almost no prior knowledge of Greek Mythology I thought I was going to be completely lost going into this book, but I thought the main points were explained pretty well. I will say, I needed to keep looking up the relationships between the characters because… forgetful🫣 but again, this is coming from someone who’s never studied or read Greek Mythology.

The relationship between our MCs…. 🤌🏽
I absolutely loved them together! Blake just wanted to be there and Onyx just “wanted” to be alone… until she didn’t. This is a couple that can and will handle anything that life (or death) throws at them 🫶🏽

I love Blake. Truly, truly love them. Is love the cure for all ills? Of course not. But if Blake loves you, you’re in a good spot.

The Gods are always fickle, and when you retell the story of Medusa, you know Athena is going to hold a grudge. This was such an interesting new take on the story, and I genuinely enjoyed it.

I love how the story was modernized and how the focus wasn’t solely on the original Medusa lore. Williams created a rich new history while still incorporating pieces of the legend in a way that felt natural and compelling. I became so invested in Onyx and Blake, and I was genuinely happy with how their story ended. And that debauched public sex scene at the end was a phenomenal climax.

Thank you to T. J. Williams for the free review copy.
