My primary interest is historical, either fiction or non fiction, but I can enjoy most anything from Jane Austin to Kipling to J K Rowling. I have been very quiet on this site, but I think I might be a bit more active now. I also enjoy the stimulation of meeting people and finding out about them.
I have followed Tulloch and the Lothians from the desert sands of North Africa to Sicily, the beaches of Normandy, over canals and rivers of the Netherlands to Germany. I have enjoyed their journey from the safety of my comfortable chair only imagining the depredations of the soul, the fear, the deprivations of the body, and the incredible tiredness of fighting, and living with constant anxiety. Book 6 closes this chapter of Tulloch and the Lothians and it is unknown and unlikely that there will be a next. (I will leave the reader to ponder the basis for my conclusion.
Mr. Archibald kept up his fast pace of storytelling. Familiar characters provided connections (Hogg, CMS Drysdale, Kilner, Hood, the steady hand of Dr. Macquarie, and the unseen but felt presence of Amanda for example) for whatever time and place they have in the story. New characters such as the enigmatic Lennox add a new storyline.
The writing is crisp and clear. Tulloch is finely drawn, with a core that is challenged and grows with nuance and complexity but remains steady. I will miss the Lothians --"Dinnae mess with the Lothians!" Hogg shouted. "Shabash the gunners!"
