As a newly graduated lawyer, this book felt like it was written with readers like me in mind. Sweetening the Deal blends legal drama, workplace tension, and slow building emotional stakes into a story that’s both addictive and surprisingly heartfelt.

Somer is an incredibly relatable heroine — ambitious, smart, and driven, yet still unsure of her own abilities. Watching her navigate the high pressure world of Blackwell & Blackwell while trying to prove herself felt so authentic. Her internal tug of war between confidence and self doubt is one of the book’s strongest threads, and it makes her easy to root for from page one.

Her boss, Ted, is a standout in his own right. He’s warm, steady, and genuinely invested in Somer’s success… sometimes a little too invested. His overprotectiveness adds a layer of tension that feels both endearing and complicated, especially as Somer begins to step into her own power.
And then there’s the attorney they’re trying to recruit — charismatic, sharp, and wrapped in just enough mystery to keep you guessing. Every scene with him crackles with energy. He’s the kind of character who makes you lean in, wondering what he’s hiding and how he’ll shake up Somer’s world.

The pacing is one of the book’s biggest strengths. It moves with purpose — never dragging, never rushing — and the legal elements feel grounded without ever becoming heavy. The stakes rise naturally as Somer gets deeper into the deal she’s been tasked with, and the emotional payoff at the end is incredibly satisfying.

I received an advance review copy of this book from the author. Opinions are my own.

Reid writes a novel with heart and stakes. Calixto is a confident and respectful mmc, perfectly balancing Somer. She is a strong and confident fmc but allows herself to be supported and protected. I felt this was a refreshing dynamic, and truly appreciated it. While spicy, the scenes do not overwhelm the plot and generally play a role in it. The courtroom plot added a layer to the story that had you invested in more than just the romance. The 3 pov's were interesting and added depth and originality. The other characters in the book were fleshed out and believable. The main characters' motivations and reactions were as well, and were clear and natural. The reader understands why the characters act the way they do without having to be have it spelled out, showing that Reid wrote three dimensional characters.

I was chosen to be part of the ARC team for this book in return for an honest review. ARC Review (4/5 stars)

This book had me HOOKED at the beginning. I immediately fell in love with Somer, and the lawyers at Blackwell and Blackwell. I was so into the book I finished it in ONE day. The pacing was great and I never felt a lull. I did feel like the Somer and Calixto romance could have build up more, but I loved how their attraction worked. I liked the murder case subplot. I don’t read a lot of murder mysteries so this was the perfect amount for an amateur mystery reader. The only reason this is not a five starts for me is because the nickname Calixto used gave me a MAJOR ICK so much it would take me out of the intimate scenes.

I did receive this book as an ARC, but the opinions below are all mine.

Somer is an amazing paralegal, but she aspires to be an Attorney. What's holding her back is money and courage. That is, until the named partners at her firm offer her an opportunity that is too good to pass up. Woo an up-and-coming attorney to join their firm and they'll pay for her law school tuition. Somer, being a smart girl, says yes! But then things go from professional to personal with Calixto, the hopeful new hire. If that wasn't bad enough, Teddy, her long-time boss and office friend, starts making a move on her too.

All of this while Teddy, Somer, and Calixto are supposed to be defending a close friend accused of murder. Things begin not to add up, and lines are blurred. Toss in some lust, drinking, and not everyone being who they say they are, and you have the makings of a 5 star read.

This story hooked me in right away. I read the first 1/3 of the book in one sitting (totally not normal for me), but then the pace did slow down a bit. Not bad, just not the breakneck speed of the beginning. While law is not always a sexy topic, the author did a great job of making it an important part of the story without being boring about it. This is definitely a romance book, but there is some mystery! I can confidently say I did not see this twist coming and loved both the romance and the mystery story lines

Somer is such a great character. Strong when she needs to be, but vulnerable enough to seem realistic. Teddy's character was confusing at first. There were parts of the story where I wondered if there would be a love triangle or why choose. However, once the twist finished twisting it all made sense and I completely understood his motives. I won't say I agreed with them, but I could understand where they came from. Then there's Calixto. I will say, for the first half of the book, I honestly thought he was a little 1-dimensional. THEN HE ARRIVED! The 2nd half of the book, he was great. And of course looking back, I can see why we needed to see him as a 1-dimensional character so that the rest of the book could be as impactful as it was.

And the spice... hot damn. That club scene.... Let's just say, that's my husband's favorite scene as well! The spice is perfectly laid out. Not too much, not too little, and the right amount of steamy.

If you enjoy workplace romances, powerful no-nonsense FMCs, some mystery, and spice, this one is for you! It was definitely giving Ana Haung and Lyla Sage vibes in all the best ways.

Happy Reading!!

Can I say woof because WOOF! For her very first, debut novel Samuela Owens Reid knocked this out of the park!

We have a complex group of characters, that, while small they all make a big impact on the story. From the office staff and attorneys to the one offs Reid gives us fleshed out characters. While I will say some of the one offs arnt completely needed and add some drama that doesnt fit narratively everyone has their role to play.
I enjoyed the closer look of the judicial system from the POV of the people working there, and yes I can confirm court house security guards as just as board/mean in person haha. It was refreshing to see a chnage from the usual, "small town" or "farm to save" scenery.

The spice was SPICY, while we didn't get every other chapter knocking boots (which i do enjoy just as much plot as sex) we did get intricately detailed and very passionate encounters. I do however wish we had more public play! That little taste made me want so much more!!

Now the reason for the .5 missing score. I almost feel like the ending was rushed. We get the big revel, our leading lady mopes then suddenly its over. Barely anything post get back together besides the little time leap we got as a bonus. I almost craved more stakes, more begging more Cal doing horribly nasty things to her in public >:3 and what happened to him anyways? He doesnt end up with Blackwell and Blackwell but it isnt stated he goes and works for Somer either? Reid im begging continue their story!
Alas for such a small fault it won't prevent from telling literally all of you to go, go read it immediately on release I am BEGGING you to love this strong ass woman story and enjoy it as much as I did!

Read as a member of the ARC Team. Book provided by author.

Sweetening the Deal was a beautiful read! This was a great first novel for Reid, and makes me excited to see what’s next.

I don’t typically read legal mystery type of books, but I’m glad I read this. It’s enough legal mixed romance and spice that I was hooked (and hoping for more). I watch a lot of legal shows (not sure why I don’t read more in this genre), and I could picture the courtroom scene so clearly. I was so hooked on it and didn’t skip pages ahead to get past it. 😬

I loved the characters. Reid fleshed them out so well and made them very believable. We get to know their reasons and intentions which make every move they make feel believable. Somer is a fierce FMC! I loved her vulnerability and strength. Calixto was an interesting, mysterious MMC who finally stole my heart also. Teddy seemed to be a man in control as one of the MMC; in control with his own secrets. I have to shout out Mr. Blackwell as he was one of my favorite side characters!

The character building helped make the 3 POVs strong. I love books that switch POV because I always want to know what the other characters are thinking, and this flow was great and kept the story moving. The plot moved at the perfect pace. It wasn’t too slow or too fast, and didn’t have spots where I lost interest. I wanted to devour every word.

The spice was 🥵 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. Spaced well out so it didn’t become a main character of its own, but felt realistic to how life goes.

It’s a 5⭐️read for me! Highly recommend if you want a read that will suck you in and leave you feeling good!

Sweetening the Deal — ARC Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.25/5)

I absolutely loved this book. I finished it in a single day because I *needed* to know how everything would unfold. The story gave me strong Suits vibes — but with a much spicier, romance-driven twist that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Somer and Calixto were incredible characters. Their chemistry, tension, and connection made the story so engaging, and they were both easy to root for from the start. I’ll admit there were a few moments where I was secretly hoping the story might turn into a why-choose situation, but I ended up just as satisfied with how their journey played out. Their relationship development felt natural, emotional, and deeply compelling.

The writing flowed beautifully, and the characters were very easy to connect with. While I would have loved to see more focus on her deal rather than the trial as the story progressed, the direction the plot took still delivered an excellent twist that genuinely surprised me.

This is a fantastic recommendation for anyone who enjoys workplace romance with strong characters, engaging tension, and satisfying emotional payoffs. I’m already looking forward to adding a physical copy to my bookshelf.

Many thanks to Samuela Ried for the opportunity to read this advanced copy!

I absolutely enjoyed this book. I was hooked to the point, I finished it in less than 24 hours.

A little murder mystery trial and a love story that takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Reid provides 3 point of views, which adds depth to the plot line that I find important as you read the book. The book isn’t fast or slow paced, it’s just perfect. There’s a wonderful balance of independence, protectiveness, drama, action, mystery, spice, emotional intelligence, and plot twists throughout the book.

Somer is THAT girl, who gives her all to things and people she cares and loves. A proposition is given, will Somer risk it all to chase her dreams? Teddy’s life is perfect or so it seems, as you delve further into the book you’ll discover his life is spiraling. Will Teddy find his footing once more? Calixto an air of mystery but ever so captivating. What is his end game, is he real or just putting up a front and hiding secrets? The way each character is written by Reid has you connecting to each one. Overall, the book was absolutely exhilarating. One of those books that I would re-read.

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 🌶️
There’s just a handful of descriptive intimate scenes. They’re spaced out nicely and aren’t thrown into every chapter.

Sweetening the Deal is a charming and enjoyable romance that blends heartfelt moments with a developing relationship that feels both warm and engaging.

What stood out most to me was the dynamic between the characters. Their interactions bring a sense of authenticity to the story, and watching their connection grow adds an emotional layer that keeps the narrative interesting.

The story moves at a comfortable pace, allowing the characters and their relationship to develop naturally. Along the way, the emotional moments help give the romance more depth and make the characters easy to root for.

For me, this earns 4 ⭐ because the story was enjoyable and well-paced, though there were a few moments where I would have liked to see certain scenes explored a little further.

Overall, it’s a sweet and satisfying romance that fans of character-driven love stories will likely appreciate.

This is a 4 ⭐ for me because:

• the characters felt relatable and easy to connect with
• the romance develops in a natural way
• the emotional moments add warmth to the story
• the pacing keeps the story moving smoothly

Sweet. Warm. Enjoyable.

Read this book if you like:

• contemporary romance
• character-focused love stories
• emotional relationship development
• light and heartfelt romantic reads

ARC Review 4.5 Stars

From the beginning of Sweetening the Deal, I was wrapped in Reid's cozy workplace romance-driven novel. The characters and the world invite the reader to care deeply about the story's stakes.

The balance of romance, plot, and spice is perfect. There's an entire subplot about a murder trial. Although the twist didn't catch me off guard, it is eloquently woven throughout the novel. The reader isn't just getting a fun, endearing romance but a compelling courtroom drama.

This is what I'll say about Reid's prose: it made me go back and rework some of my own. The narrative seamlessly transitions between Somer, Calixto, and Teddy’s perspectives, offering distinct tonal shifts that fit each character’s unique voice. Somer and Calixto’s connection, in particular, radiates off the page. The emotional payoffs, in general, are satisfying. However, Somer starts as a likable, capable character, leaving little room for growth.

This is an easy recommendation for fans of workplace romance or anyone looking for a "cozy" read with a bit of a bite. I’ll finish by saying this: I’d join the team at Blackwell & Blackwell in a heartbeat.

Somer is a paralegal at Blackwell & Blackwell, but dreams of becoming an attorney. Those dreams seem far off, but Blackwell & Blackwell has been the best to gain knowledge and support and now she just needs to gain the confidence (and money) to get there. Never to turn a gift away, Mr. Blackwell offers her law school tuition and a place to work after graduation...if she can help them lure in a new attorney who would be an asset to the company. Make a good impression on him and show him the close, family-like feel of the office. Seems easy peasy, right?

Unfortunately, said attorney is the guy who just spilled coffee on Somer. How can she help woo him? And there's something about him that's familiar, but she can't put her finger on it. Not to mention, they are in the midst of a murder trial defending Mr. Blackwell's best friend. Could things get more complicated?

I was super excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. It had the perfect level of romance/spice and intrigue and now I'm invested and can't wait to read more.

Sweetening the Deal blends romance, legal drama, and a touch of mystery in an engaging way. The premise is unique, a paralegal tasked with charming a lawyer to secure her law school tuition and it quickly becomes more complicated when professional boundaries start turning personal.

Somer is an ambitious and relatable main character, and the dynamic between her, Calixto, and Teddy adds layers of tension and intrigue. I especially enjoyed how the story mixed romance with legal drama and a murder case, which kept things interesting.

At times the middle of the book felt like it dragged a little, and the pacing slowed more than I would have liked. However, the twists toward the end were excellent and really pulled the story together.

Overall, if you enjoy romance with a legal backdrop, a bit of spice, and a suspenseful twist, this is a fun read.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sweetening the Deal was such an enjoyable read from start to finish. I really loved the dynamic of the Blackwell & Blackwell law offices, it added a fun, grounded backdrop that made the story feel fuller and more immersive.

Somer was an especially strong MC for me. She felt incredibly relatable in the way she navigated her emotions, her work, and her sense of self. I found myself genuinely rooting for her and connecting to her internal experience throughout the book.

And the chemistry between Somer and Calixto? Sooo good. The romantic build was paced perfectly, and the tension between them had me fully locked in. The heat felt natural and earned, which made their connection even more satisfying to read.

A solid 5-star read for me, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to more from this author!

An easy read with the perfect combination of sexy and sweet, and, romance and mystery. The author Samuela does a great job of creating the foundation for the story, building up anticipation and setting the stage for a few plot twists.

The story demonstrates the balancing act of sexuality and empowerment through themes of feminism and character development. Told through the point of view from the trio of main characters, Sommer, Teddy and Calixto, readers can enjoy a unique perspective (three sides to every story am I right?!), that keeps the story moving with just the right amount of guessing.

Modern day girl boss romance -I could totally see this on a streaming service as a limited series or more! Honored to be chosen as an ARC reader and cannot wait to see more from this author!

I was able to read this book as an ARC reader and it was an amazing book! 4.5/5 ⭐️ 2.5-3/5 🌶️
It gives smutty scenes, romance, he falls hard, and found family. 💙
The book starts with Somer helping her boss Teddy with a murder trial. Gabe is one of Teddys good friend and is being tried for his wife’s murder. All while prepping for this murder trial, where all evidence points towards Gabe being guilty enters Calixto… Teddys company is trying to hire Calixto and tells Somer she must do whatever it takes to get him hired; and in return they will help her pay for her dream of becoming a lawyer.
Little do they know… Calixto is already entrapped by Somer and will do anything for her. 💙💙
The ending is wild and crazy! I definitely did not predict who Calixtos father was… or who the real killer was…

If you love romance with a hint of mystery/thriller I recommend this book!!

As a paralegal, I always find it interesting when legal professionals show up in romance novels, so I was excited to read this. The story centers around an arrangement between two characters that gradually becomes more complicated as emotions start to get involved, which creates a lot of tension throughout the book.

I enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters. Their personalities contrast in a way that makes their interactions engaging and sometimes a little intense. The emotional development is also strong, and the characters feel more layered as the story progresses.

The writing style is easy to follow and focuses heavily on dialogue and character dynamics, which works well for a romance like this. Even though it includes some familiar romance tropes, the premise and character interactions help keep it interesting.

Thank you Samuela Owens Reid for providing the opportunity to read and review this eARC!!

I loved the complicated characters in this multi-POV romance. Reading each perspective as their relationships develop, change and grow, was enjoyable. Each character showing empathy, reflecting, and growing was great to see.

Somer is a relatable FMC, finding her way in life and career. Finally identifying a path with Blackwell & Blackwell, her current supportive employer, yet feeling doubts and finding all the hurdles/excuses.

Teddy is working a tough murder case to defend his best friend and finds himself leaning more on Somer for support.

Calixto is the hot lawyer recruit, searching for a way to escape a company merger.

I loved the legal drama entwined with this romance and had fun yelling “called it!” with some of the twists (confusing hubby 😂)

This was my first book by Samuela and I look forward to reading more 😍

The writing of this book was very fluid making it easy to follow and struggle to put down! I have never read a legal romance before and after this I don't know why it took me so long! I didn't know which way the love triangle was going, I was rooting for Teddy up until he played victim (still love him though). I actually didn't see Calixto's secret coming, I thought it might have something to do with his intentions were with his potential employer, I've never been so far off with a plot twist before, I LOVED IT!!
The court hearing, wowee!! The whole time I was reading this I couldn't look away, I didn't see any of this coming!
I appreciated the way the author delivered the sensitivity of some topics in the book.

Lil bit of spice, probably wouldn't recommend reading this in the same room as family :)

This was such a fun, sweet book! I loved the MFC Somer. She is a hardworking paralegal who has dreams of becoming a lawyer. I liked her hardworking attitude, and her ability to think quickly on her feet. I also liked her relationship with Calixto. They were both able to communicate very effectively and it was so nice reading about a relationship that was so nontoxic. Seeing Calixto support her dreams of law school was so fun to read. I also liked that we saw Ted’s pov. It was fun reading from a perspective that wasn’t one of the main characters. While the ending wasn’t a huge shock, I did enjoy seeing them solve the case.

I really enjoyed this book, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you to the author for providing me this ARC for review!

As someone involved in a legal profession, I really connected with this book. I could see the law firm and court and the overall atmosphere. The author did very well describing the setting and characters.

This book had the romance (there is plenty of spice without it overtaking the plot) and a bit of a mystery in it. I enjoyed reading the three perspectives and I wasn't sure how it was going to lean, but I found the ending was satisfying.

I would recommend this to those who love legal workplace dramas and romance.

Ms. Reid definitely knocked it out of the ballpark with this one. There were some parts that were predictable, which I love because who doesn't want to be right some times. But there were twists I did NOT see coming at all. The sub plot of the case/trial also had me interested. Even the supporting characters had me wanting to know more because they were amazing. There was comedy. There was romance. There was SPICE🔥🌶️. I can not wait to see where Reid takes the characters next!!

Congratulations Reid! The book was incredible.

Sweetening the Deal is such an amazing ride through three different characters POV's. Each sounding so distinct and rich that it feels like you are in their heads.
Samuela Owens Reid has a way to bring out environments and emotions in a myriad of ways that speak to her love of literature.
There were twists and turns and spice that was oh-so-good. Legal terminology and tension were wonderfully done, and taught me a few things as well.
This was definitely a five star read, the plot is highly engaging and the characters are easy to fall in love with.

I enjoyed this author's debut novel. I'm not familiar with the environment, however, I never felt that the story was beyond my comprehension. Somer is a paralegal and understands the reality of a women working in this field. Her character was strong, sassy, and confident enough in her knowledge and experience to not let anyone push her down. I was unsure of Calixto at first, but he grew on me. The supporting characters certainly added to the story and there was enough spice to keep it interesting on that level. Overall, enjoyable to read.

I really liked this story. My first legal jargon book.
Somer is a paralegal who wants to be an attorney but cant truly afford law school but her bosses came up with an idea/plan.
Calixto is an attorney looking for a new firm to join bc he doesn't want to do the merger with the other firm.
Somer is tasked with recruiting Calixto and things end up getting spicy.
Through trials (literally) and turbulence Somer discovers herself and love.
This is a good book and even had me laughing out loud esp when Somer tells Calixto to make himself at home in her house.

It has a strong-ass FMC. It has murder mystery. It was such a good read and I found myself not wanting it to end! Loved this book! I picked this up and didn’t stop until I finished. I loved the banter, the sass, the correctness of the legal parts (many books are wrong), the spice the mystery, and oh I just loved it all! The writing was fantastic! Sweetening the Deal by Samuela Owens Reid was a solid 4⭐ read for me. The chemistry between Somer and Calixto was super fun and at times serious. Overall I enjoyed the storyline and twists.

Did not enjoy: the strong language that was used a few times. I’m glad it wasn’t used more but I find it unnecessary.
