In the world of ranching and horse racing, wealth and power flow from one source. All roads lead to Black Diamond Ranch—and once you're in, there’s no way out.
Truth, when whispered, is a fragile thing. Especially when you're desperate for it to be a lie.
After my mother’s death, I was thrown into a world I never asked to be part of—one built on bloodlines, legacies, and a father I’ve never met. I didn’t come here looking for answers, but the ones I’ve found threaten to unravel everything. There are secrets buried deep in the soil of Black Diamond, and I should be afraid of what they’ll cost me.
But I’m not. Not when he’s watching.
Colter Shaw. The heir to a southern empire. Arrogant, magnetic, and cold as the bourbon in his glass. He’s the kind of man who keeps people at arm’s length—and yet looks at me like I’m the only thing worth touching. We’re from two different worlds, raised on opposite sides of privilege and pain.
He says I don’t belong here. Maybe he’s right. But that hasn’t stopped him from acting like I do. Like I will.
They warned me that Black Diamond would change me. What they didn’t tell me is how much I’d want it to.

I went into this expecting a gritty cowboy romance and got something close, but not quite all the way there.
Peyton being dropped into the Shaw family, a secret-heavy world had me hooked right away. She is grieving, overwhelmed, and suddenly surrounded by power, loyalty, and danger, and that emotional whiplash really worked for me. Colter’s focus on her is immediate and intense, the kind of protective, obsessive energy that defines him and anchors the romance.
Peyton was the strongest part of this story. Watching her grow from broken and lost into someone who slowly finds her footing and her place within the Shaw family was genuinely satisfying. The found family dynamic added emotional weight, especially the way everyone closes ranks around her. The mystery tied to her mother’s past and John’s guarded behavior kept the tension simmering, and while the buildup was slower at times, the emotional payoff still landed.
While this did not fully reach the heights I hoped for, it still delivered a compelling storyline with strong moments throughout. Some sections moved more slowly, but the plot kept me turning pages, the twists were solid, and the world itself has a lot going for it.
It may not have completely swept me away, but it kept me engaged and curious enough to continue the series.

Grateful to Kinsey Hunt and The Smuthood for the Advanced Reader Copy. All views expressed are solely my own. ✨
4.5 ⭐️ This is a cowboy mafia style romance that I throughly enjoyed! Peyton moves to Black Diamond Ranch with the man she never knew was her father after her mother passes. Colter is the next in line to take over the ’family’. The chemistry between them is 🥵. Colter and her father, John, try to protect Peyton from what they think is the truth regarding her mother, but so they know the full story? I loved the twists that this book had and look forward to reading more from the author
I was presented with an e-book ARC of this book from The Smuthood. My review is entirely my own.
4 stars-
I enjoyed reading from both perspectives, yet still felt kept in the dark as to certain plot lines. Didn’t get much of a breadcrumb from either perspective or the internal strife of withholding secrets. The first half felt relatively slow with a major ending crescendo and a twist I wasn’t expecting. The timeline felt difficult to follow towards the end. Had no idea how much time passed or even what season it was, especially in the epilogue. Didn’t really feel finished. The Yellowstone-esque vibe mixed in with Walker Texas Ranger and Sons of Anarchy violence and action was what really kept me intrigued. Needed some additional editing but was easy to figure out what was being meant. This genre needs more books as nothing sounds sexier than a violent cowboy that emulates Rip AND Beth from Yellowstone.
Not sure I really liked this one at all. First off thanks to the smuthood and author for the ARC copy. Dark Cowboy romance ? Hell yeah.
This book started off okay, then turned a bit weird and totally lost me when the MMC got a bl** J** from another person infront of the FMC and still acted like king tut and the fmc still acted like he was all that in a bag of chips.
I did read until the end but didn't enjoy it. doesn't mean you wont!
I really liked Leather and Lace! The whole Yellowstone/mafia vibes was a unique combination that had me intrigued from the start, and Kinsley Hunt did it exceptionally well.
What really stood out to me was that Hunt does an amazing job of making you feel immersed in the story. I became so absorbed in Peyton’s new life at Black Diamond Ranch to the point where I couldn’t put the book down. Also, the characters’ emotions, especially Peyton’s, were incredibly resonant.
It was the mystery and suspense elements, though, that really added to the story for me and made this an unputdownable read. The twists in this book landed sharply and were ones that I did not expect.
Leather and Lace is a breath of fresh air for cowboy romance lovers like me. I finished it in one sitting, so you know it has to be good!
P.S. Kinsley Hunt I would love to read a prequel about how John and Sutton ended up together!

⚠️The author provides a list of content/trigger warnings, so be sure to check those before you read. They are located at the beginning of the book.
Did I enjoy the storyline? Yes. However as previous reviewers have noted, there were so many editing mistakes it was hard to see past. While I liked Peyton as Character, Colter needed more to him. I understand there is a sense of mystery to him, but he was very repetitive and he had the potential to be so much more.
I kept reading because the plot was gripping and I really wanted to know what happened and how the story was going to unfold.
I WILL be reading Paces story! I’m very excited to see what else this author can bring into this world she’s creating. I just hope there’s a bit more story building and some serious edits next time!
FINISHED IN ONE SITTING! Colter is a man of mystery and charm. But has the look that he doesn't tolerate anything when it comes to the woman sitting across from him.
Colter and his father Hudson came to pick up Peyton after they found her mom deceased. They have alot hate when it comes to the the things Sadie did.
Will they make Peyton pay for those things or will the truth come out. That is what Peyton is out for the truth. Because since she arrived at her father's house in Texas no one has told her to the truth about anything.
I really liked the story and the tension in the book.
I had trouble with everybody being vague to Peyton the whole time. I feel like half of the book was everybody dodging questions she asked, not wanting to give her answers.
The other half of the book was really good, they "mafia" pieces were really good
This review is based of an ARC, not completely finalized.
Only reason I am giving 3 out of 5 stars is because of 2 things: 1 - a couple of plot issues I see 2 - emphasis on a secret that shouldn’t have been a secret
Overall spice, and world / characters are great. Plot has possibility to become 5 / 5 stars!!!
***spoilers ⚠️ Colter is the heir to the ranch empire and “secret” mafia / family organization. His father, Hudson, is all but retired and Colter runs the show. Colter’s brother Jackson also helps but is less involved in the dark side of the organization. Peyton is tracked down after her mother, Sadie’s death by her real father, John Denver, who works closely with Colter and his family. Peyton is financially forced to live with John because Sadie was an addict and they had no money. Sadie was in debt for a lot of money, and put Peyton’s name as co-signer. Peyton often gave as good as she got but also backed down a lot. John takes her in out of obligation and pays her debt off. He references her staying as only a “visit”. Peyton becomes part of ranch life, joining in chores and duties. Pace and Lee are her half brothers. Sutton is her step mother, but not the boys’ mother. Emma was who passed years ago. Peyton constantly gets looks and murmurs around her about how her mother is a disgrace and the devil herself. No one will tell Peyton what’s going on. She can infer her mother did something horrible, and she wasn’t the best mother, but Sadie was all Peyton had. Colter claims Peyton and always says he is responsible for her out loud and internally, but then he has (minor) relations with this chick Melanie (who you later find out was someone he was supposed to Marty - contract from birth - but was voided when he was 15). Melanie is obsessed with Colter, even though he is open and honest he only wants a good time, not a long time. Peyton catches Colter with Melanie and runs. Colter acts like (externally) it isn’t a big deal, but internally he admits he knows he messed up. When it seems “official” between them, he still decides to comfort Melanie, in order to “keep the peace” than with making sure Peyton is comforted. Peyton decides to get answers from her grandparents who vehemently have voiced they want nothing to do with Peyton. They talk in vague responses and riddles, only giving bread crumbs, not answers. When Peyton goes back, she is confronted basically saying she can’t handle the truth, even though she begs and demands the truth. Background plot is someone is trying to get to Peyton. Eventually Peyton gets kidnapped and everything comes to light. Laurel, her grandmother aspired to climb the social ladder in the organization. In order to do so she manipulated her daughter, Sadie to do things she didn’t want to and roofie John in order to get pregnant. Laurel also arranged for the car accident that unalived Emma, John’s first wife. But put blame on Sadie. Henry, who was an abusive staple in Peyton’s life and attributed to a lot of residual trauma, the addiction and ultimate death of Sadie, was actually Laurel’s lackey. Colter finds her and everyone now knows the truth. Sadi wasn’t at fault and was manipulated.
Plot Issues 1 - Peyton’s personality and morals were wishy washy. She’d have a back bone one second and retreat in the next. 2 - John was immediately dismissive of Peyton upon fist meeting her and when she arrived, they he is warm towards her. 3 - Colter seems more occupied with keeping the peace of all than with keeping his woman’s peace, seems out of character for “touch her and d!e” / obsessed vibes 4 - no groveling.

I am giving Leather and Lace 3 stars because as much as I was pulled in by the plot, I was absolutely filled with rage due to the sheer lack of editing and continuity throughout this book. Every page seemed to be filled with misspellings, missing or erroneously added punctuation, or the entirely wrong words used. On multiple occasions sentences were copied and adjusted like editing was attempted but not actually finished. The wrong names were used or names were changed within the same chapter at times. This read painfully like a first draft and it was so irritating. I thought, "Okay, maybe it's because it's an ARC and there still needs to be editing done." But no, I was actually emailed the ARC on January 4th, and the book released on Kindle Unlimited on January 2nd. So I downloaded the Kindle version because surely that has more editing than the ARC I received. Jokes on all of us, the 'published' version was the exact same thing.
I know that professional editing is expensive. I know that indie authors usually struggle with the funds to publish their novels. However, this lack of editing was nigh on inexcusable. There wasn't a single friend that could have given it a read through to check? The author didn't read through and check?
All that aside, I really did like the story. I think that's what makes me so made. More time could have been put into this to clean it up and make it great. Instead, it felt half finished. I really liked the characters (for the most part). Peyton was very well written. I liked her a lot. Colter, on the other hand, was so hot and cold about Peyton that the author could have told us he had DID and it would have made sense. The chemistry between the two didn't fit well. There seemed to be very little interaction before Colter was obsessed (though, not too obsessed to turn down a basically public blow job from a regular lay of his.)
I wanted to like this so much more than I did. I got hung up on the poor writing and random OWD to add drama. Everything about this felt just a bit too flat and a bit too unfinished. If more time and care had been spent on getting it cleaned up and properly edited (not just for grammar but also for content and continuity), it really would have been a fantastic book.
Thank you to The Smuthood and Kinsley Hunt for the ARC.
*M/F *Contemporary Romance *Dual-1st-PoV *Cowboy Romance *Organised Crime *Small Town *Family Drama *Minor OW drama *Insta Attraction *Mid/Slow Burn *Standalone *Interconnected Series Mainly good! So the basis of this book is good, it’s needed some fine tuning for me 🙂 excluding the editorial issues (which I believe are an update issue not necessarily the writing) it felt a tad repetitive with the everyone is hiding something from the FMC aspect (her father, Colter, her family) and it came up numerous times throughout the book which stalled it a little bit for me. Although they had great chemistry between the characters the 🌶️🥵 scenes were similar and didn’t quite have the detail I was looking for. The characterisation of Peyton and Colter needed firming up: Colter had some good characteristics (sweet to her vs ajar to everyone else; touch her and 💀); Peyton was endearing and had some fire but it was realistic when she employed this or backed down. I wouldn’t clad this as dark but I enjoyed the plot as well with the mystery surrounding her mother I found that really intriguing 😀 I would read the next book in the series as I feel invested enough in the characters and would be willing to see if the forth develops 👍
I just love cowboy small town romances, but it really levels up when you add an unhinged morally grey mmc and some dark crime business. I was hooked onto this, the plot was amazing, and the characters were so fun too. Peytons new to this ranch and is stuck with her biological father, after her alcoholic mom (and supposedly only family) passed away. She’s thrust into a new cowboy world and it’s tense but with some cute elements. She meets her new half brothers and they grow to adore her, although we can’t say the same for their dad, and she grows into ranch life. But she doesn’t realise that their world is dangerous, almost as dangerous as the man who’s obsessed with her. Cause Colter causes her so much trouble, and the hate to love was brilliant. This book also has some murder mystery elements that I love, as Peyton starts to uncover secrets about her mother’s past even as everyone tries to stop her. There were some really great twists too, I was just shook from the revelation, and it needed really sweet too. As for characters, I admit, there’s a lot of fmcs I like better than Peyton, but I do love Colter. He’s unhinged and one look at her and he’s obsessed. He’s supposed to just be protecting her at first like a glorified crime boss bodyguard but then he stakes a claim on her, and damn if I’m not one to love son “she’s mine” action. He’s also oh so wrapped around her tiny little finger it’s adorable. There’s one great spicy scenes to go along with the plot and I loved Peyton and Colters chemistry! I give this book a 4/5
Really 3.5 stars but didn’t want to give it 3 star marking!
Now don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book but the grammar and spelling mistakes were throwing me off a being dyslexic I struggled though some paragraphs having to reread them! Unsure if author has a Beta team, if not would strongly advise for one as these guys help find the little mistakes you may not notice!
Moving on, the plot was plotting and I loved it. The whole mystery of it all and what the big secret was. I do wish we had some more on Johns background, I felt it lead up to that and then we didn’t get much of an detailed, like Sadie slept with him whilst he was grieving his first wife? I just got slightly confused then.
I was getting irritated for Peyton when everyone was avoiding her questions and “it’s not my story to tell”, it got boring fast.
I loved Paces relationship with Peyton and him being the best big brother to her.
Now Calter, I was utterly obsessed but the fact we get no POV of him telling Melanie where to go or anything? Like you made Peyton out to be a mug. I’m sorry I said it. Ain’t no way you would have gotten round me so easily regardless if it was “test”.
I really enjoyed the book, the storyline had me hooked from the very first page until the end.
It had good pace and going throughout the book
I enjoyed the tension and the chemistry in the book
The book was a perfect combination of cowboy /dark romance with mafia aspects weaved through it. The spice and heat we got was amazing and made me hot under the collar
I finished the arc in 1.5 days and I was left wanting more and look forward to more in the series.. Maybe a novella of how John and Sutton met.
I know there was a few spelling mistakes but this was an arc copy and it didn't ruin my experience of the book.
Thankyou kinsley Hunt and the Smuthood for the gift of the arc. This is my honest review
I had almost forgotten I signed up for this one, and so in the words of Bob Ross, I will call this a "happy accident"
On my way out of a slump this is certainly one to help!
The FMC has her world turned upside down after the death of her mother, turns out her dad is still alive and part of "the family". Her mother kept her a secret and is also guilty of something terrible which is not talked about. So she is summoned to live with them and pay of the debts they have so graciously taken care of.
That is where the MMC comes in, instantly attracted to her, he (ofcourse) tries to fight it but ends up doing some light stalking or as he likes to call it: keeping an eye on her.
The story kind of flows from there and while there is some spice here and there it is not the main focus.
There is ofcourse still "the family" and the BIG secret which is all explained in the end, but while it usually annoys me, this one does not. Yes there is a secret but people also live their lives around it and it is not the one thing that keeps the FMC and MMC apart.
Major Yellowstone vibes but with that delicious dark romance edge I crave.
If you love a setting that feels like a character itself, Black Diamond Ranch delivers. It’s gritty, full of secrets, and bleeds power and corruption.
The chemistry here is palpable. Colter Shaw is the definition of an alphahole in the best way possible, arrogant, cold, and possessing a level of "touch her and die" energy that I am always here for. The tension between him and the FMC is thick enough to cut with a knife.
While it’s "Mafia Lite," the stakes felt high, and the family politics added a layer of suspense that kept me hooked. It’s a solid start to the series with plenty of steam and just enough darkness to keep things interesting.
This is supposed to be a Yellowstone/Mafia inspired story with an obsessive MMC and I saw the vision yet it didn’t quite work for me like that.
The plot was interesting but it lacked to keep me interested, the story dragged on. 70% in and Peyton was still in the “dark” about what was really happening around her and who she was surrounded by. It was longer than necessary, in a sense I get it maybe it was to keep readers on edge but it went on and on. The author kept mentioning how “free” or “normal” the FMC felt and it was a little too repetitive for me.
Colter was definitely very possessive over Peyton and it was more of an insta lust to “love” . He tried to protect her by not telling her anything and wanting to keep distance and it lasted like 3 seconds😅
I’m a bit stuck with this one, I really did want to love it but it fell short in parts.
Firstly I loved the characters, Peyton and Colter had some great tension and chemistry. I love a brooding cowboy romance, however this didn’t quite hit the spot for me.
I found parts of the book seemed somewhat rushed, the majority of the book lead up to a big reveal of sorts only for it to be over and done with far too quickly given the build up.
Overall just not what I feel it could have been, I would potentially read the next book in the series as I did like the characters.
I love me some cowboy romance especially when it’s Dark Romance. I really enjoyed the world that Kinsley created I’m definitely interested in seeing more of it. There were some repetitive concepts about everyone keeping secrets that could have been a cut out but over all the characters were really interesting. Colter and Peyton were well written and not one dimensional which made for a good plot. This was my first read by Kinsley and absolutely look forward to more.
I want to say thank you Kinsley Hunt and the Smuthood for the chance to ARC this story
I really enjoyed this book. It was a good pace and well written. A bit different than some of the authors teasers but I know things end up scrapped.
There is a little bit of OW drama but it is before they get together ( he gets a bj from her and the FMC finds out) which threw me off at first but I like how the author and the characters handled it.
Overall, a good, well written book and I can’t wait for more
If you're more into suspense then "smut" then this is the book for you! I overall devoured this book in less than 24 hours. Hell, I stayed up way too late to keep reading because it had such a chokehold over me!
The FMC had a horrible life growing up and after her mother is killed she's swooped up by this mystery man who informs her that he knows her father (she doesn't know her father didn't know she existed) and immediately the MMC is crushing on her and has no clue why.
There is a little repetitiveness and some grammar errors. But I loved this book! Definitely has a little movie playing in my head the whole time!!
I really tried to like this book. The spelling errors were frequent. And it just felt like things were not moving fast at all. I took a break and tried coming back to it, I couldn’t do it still. It feels like there’s a lot of different stories going on and is more mafia than anything or secret society instead of a cowboy mafia book.
What a great read. I loved it from start to finish. I couldn’t get enough of all the cowboys and the family drama and secrets. The overall tension felt through the book was incredible and the secrets so big it had me racing to finish. The ending was amazing and really helped to end the book nicely
The way I devoured this book...I never knew I needed cowboy mafia style romance until this! (FYI - this isn't a true "mafia" book in the way people think mafia, but it is in the same "family" - pun intended)
Colter Shaw is next in line to take over the ranch business where a few ranches collide to make one big "family" - a family that takes care of each other and relies on loyalty. Nothing is more important to Colter then his focus on the family business and the loyalty surrounding him, until he meets Peyton.
Peyton Masterson just lost her mom - and even though she's not legally bond to anything, she ends up on Black Diamond Ranch with the man she thought didn't want her...her father. Peyton isn't given a choice, just told she has to now live with her father and learn the ways of the ranch, and if she doesn't she'll lose her protection and be a target. As Peyton meets all the people who she should call family, she's only met with sideways looks and disapproving grunts.
Colter and Peyton's chemistry is off the charts. Their banter is top tier and the way Colter sends up all the green...I mean red...flags has you swooning! Colter and John do everything they can to protect Peyton from the truth, but little do they know - they don't know the full truth either. This book was full of a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming, but made it that much more enthralling!
When the spice hits, it hits - although I would have loved a little more spice in this. If I could give half star ratings this aspect would take it to 4.5, but if you're looking story line, characters and plot - 5 stars all the way! I can't wait to read the other men from Black Diamond Ranch!
I devoured this book. Absolutely could not put it down…I was hooked from page one. Colter… dear lord. This man radiates dominance, protection, possessive, completely obsessed energy, and my stomach has never done so many flips. The pure boss level confidence? Criminal. And a cowboy who’d burn the whole damn world down for you? Immediate yes.
The suspense, the characters, the plot, the spice…all chef’s kiss perfection. Yes, the ARC had a few errors, but honestly? Not enough to dull the shine or change my feelings. This story still hit hard and left me feral in the best way. 😮🔥
ARC REVIEW ✨✨✨This book swept me up from the very first chapter and never let go. At its heart is a forbidden “something” that feels both dangerous and deeply magnetic, layered with dark secrets from both families that slowly unravel in the most addictive way. Every page carries a quiet, simmering tension — the kind that makes you lean in, knowing that wealth and power are just as much part of the story as love itself.
What makes this so compelling is how it exists inside a world ruled by influence, legacy, and control. These families don’t just have money — they have reach, history, and the ability to shape lives. Once you’re pulled into their orbit, you’re no longer just a person, you’re part of something much larger… and far more dangerous. The story constantly reminds you that being welcomed into this world is both a privilege and a trap. Once you belong, you never truly get out.
And yet, in the middle of all that darkness, there’s something achingly beautiful. The connection between characters is built on instinctive trust — the kind that forms before logic can interfere — and on the rare feeling of being safe with someone when the rest of the world feels anything but. Their bond becomes a quiet rebellion against everything these powerful families stand for.
The families themselves are endlessly fascinating, each layered with ambition, loyalty, secrets, and quiet threats. Every new character feels like another door opening into a deeper, more dangerous part of the story, and you’re left wanting to meet them all — even when you know they’re hiding something.
Moody, seductive, and emotionally charged, this book is perfect for readers who love dark romance wrapped in wealth, power, and secrets. It’s not just about falling — it’s about what it costs to belong to a family that never lets go. 🖤
I can’t wait to read more books for this series! I absolutely loved this book. It definitely has Yellowstone vibes. It’s dark and twisty and I definitely didn’t see the end playing out the way it did.
Tropes Mafia / Yellowstone vibes Touch her and 💀 Obsessed MMC Fiery FMC Billionaire Cowboys Twists and turns
First of all, many thanks for the ARC 🤗♥️ I enjoyed it very much.
Cowboy romance is not really my jam, but the addition of darkish themes into the book and the possessive personality of Coiter made this so much fun to read! I also loved the found and family dynamic Peyton had with her father and her brothers, even tho I hated how they mistreated her in the beginning and it made me a bit pissy with them 🫣.
I enjoyed this book and I would for sure recommend it, even tho it has some mistakes and probably needs a bit more of editing, but I don't see a big problem since I know the copy I received is not the final one that would be published and I believe the mistakes are easily fixable.
Great work with this one! I plan on reading more about the series 🙂↕️♥️
