Eyes of the Unholy: A Dark Forced Proximity Mafia Romance

Rate this book
God never answered Scarlett’s prayers—so I did.

Everyone thinks I’m pure.
The good girl.
The holy one on her knees, whispering prayers.

They’re wrong.

I’m far too dirty for salvation.
Too worthless to be loved.
Too jaded to trust anyone.

Because faith is a double-edged sword—
a weapon forged in obedience and silent vows, wielded by men with wealth and power.

So when a man drags me from a church on Christmas night, I expect brutality.
What I get is worse.

He doesn’t touch me as if I mean nothing.
He handles me as if I’m precious.
Like I’m fragile.
Like I matter.

And that terrifies me.

Because he kills without remorse, sees everything I try to hide, and when he looks at me, it’s not hunger—it’s possession.

The deeper I fall into his world, the uglier the truth becomes.

This isn’t about one city.
Or one cartel.
Or one broken girl.

It’s about presidents, princes, and men rich enough to believe they’re untouchable.

But when he vows to burn the world to keep me alive, can I survive what loving him will cost me?

Eyes of the Unholy is the dark, ruthless second installment in the Sin Syndicate series of mafia romances, where forced proximity, vigilante justice, and “touch her and die” devotion collide. Scarlett is a redheaded survivor with electric green eyes and fire in her veins, reclaiming her power in a world where men profit from selling flesh; Lucian is a devastatingly handsome Irish enforcer who discovers he was born into brutality, denied his inheritance, and now must claim his bloody destiny to protect his last chance at love. This book delivers high heat, morally gray men, and love with catastrophic consequences as the Syndicate war escalates. No cliffhanger. HEA guaranteed.

What you can expect from Eyes of the Unholy:
Forced Proximity
He Would Burn the World for Her
“Touch Her and Die” Energy
He Falls First
Dangerous Protector
Vigilante Justice
High Heat
Morally Gray MMC
Scarred FMC
Dark Mafia Romance

Clearly this book is part of a series and I think reading the other books would have helped; but glad I didn’t because apparently there is a 3some with our current MMC in another book (wonderful!!!) and the guy is still smitten with the lady or at least still see her in a friendly way (double wonderful)

I loved the meeting between the MCs I mean fighting in a church was hot.

I found the book was a bit dragging. They met around 6% into the book and the next scene with the two of them is well after 30%… and nothing much happened in between.

But where I couldn’t go on with this book is basically the scene at the s3x club… why would I want to read pages and pages about a character that popped out of nowhere being DP???
So yes if voyeurism and slow burn are your cup of tea give this one a go

This book had me in a chokehold! Scarlett was so sweet and strong after everything she had been through. Lucian has my whole heart, he fell hard and fast and worked so hard to make sure Scar knew she could trust and believe in him. I loved everything about this book.. the plot, the characters, the spice, it was all woven together seamlessly and made for such a perfect read!

This dark mafia romance was everything! I devoured it! It had everything you would want: love, romance, spice, violence, suspense, chemistry, banter, and awesome MCs.

Lucian was so great; he’s added to my list as one of my favourite book boyfriends. He may have started off with ill intentions, but is redeemed almost instantly with lust at first sight when meeting Scarlett. These two have an explosive first meeting that was epic! Their fight was full of sexual tension and great banter that continued throughout the book. As much as Lucian comes off as some mafia bad guy, underneath that persona he is a loveable, adorable, caring man who would burn the world down for Scarlett. He is patient with her and understanding, and I loved the kindness he showed.

My heart broke for Scarlett. She had such a traumatic past, trying to survive and also hope for a better future. I’m so glad she found that happiness, and it was great to see her learn what she is capable of and embrace her sexuality. I loved Lucian and Scarlett, and when they finally came together it was explosive. I’m also glad they stuck together — no third-act breakup, no conflict. They chose each other, and they were epic.

There were some questions that still needed answering, and I can’t wait for more books in the series to find the answers. Bring on more mafia romance!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Forced Proximity, Fierce Love, and Vigilante Justice what more could you want!

I went into Eyes of the Unholy expecting a steamy mafia romance, but what I got was so much more.

Yes, it has the classic enemies to lovers tension and that delicious forced proximity dynamic where two strong personalities are stuck in the same space and sparks absolutely fly. But this book is layered with emotion and purpose. Scarlett’s journey from silence and survival to strength and agency felt raw and honest. Her trauma isn’t used as shock value—it’s part of her arc, and watching her reclaim herself was powerful.

Lucian is everything you want in a dark hero: intense, controlled, morally gray—but not mindless. The vigilante justice element gives the story real substance. This isn’t just a couple hooking up in a luxury penthouse. There’s a full plot involving political corruption, money laundering, and a sinister monastery network. The stakes feel real, and the consequences matter.

What surprised me most was the emotional honesty. The conversations about trust, therapy, family, and choice grounded the romance in something believable. The love story builds from suspicion and anger into something protective and enduring.
If you’re looking for a mafia romance that balances heat with a full emotional arc, real character growth, and a satisfying resolution that feels earned, this one absolutely delivers.

Welcome back to the Sin Syndicate. Now it’s time for Lucian’s story! As we have previously met him in Evie’s other books (Eyes on You) Nikolai’s story and The Broken Heroes Trilogy (book 2) Conan’s story. We are thrown back into it. When Lucian has a plan to kidnap the daughter of the mayor of NYC after they went after Lacey, everything hits the fan. Scarlett is not what he was expecting. Hearing that she is a nun and seeing her in person were two different things. She is a fireball of energy. And he soon finds out why.

This story is fast paced, has high heat, and vigilante justice. Lucian will do everything in his power to help protect her. Scarlett soon learns what all that entails. What happens when she finds out the real truth behind her past? Lucian and Scarlett’s story will have you on the edge of your seat. I can’t wait for this series to continue!

Check your trigger warnings.

Evie James you have did it again im so proud of you with the second book it’s a whole masterpiece I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to be on your team and giving me a chance to read your book.
When I tell your the Dark forced Proximity was on point I could even put this book down I was having a whole conversation with my sister while reading it as soon as I got it I had finished within two hours all the tropes was on point the character development had me wanting this book physically. I absolutely love Scarlett she gave the best girl boss energy I have ever seen I still feel bad what happened to her mom but I know her mom would be proud of her. Now for her lame father I would throw this man off the closet Bridge he made me mad at the very beginning like I would drop kick this man off the earth he had to go. Lastly my husband Lucian his chemistry from the very beginning had me hooked I was giggling then had moment want to hit him but he was perfect I can’t wait for more characters like him in the future he was chefs kiss. Dark. Devoted. Ruthless.

Eyes of the Unholy is the second installment in the Sin Syndicate Series by Evie James, and it absolutely delivers.

If you love mafia romance with an actual plot, emotional depth, and characters that crawl under your skin in the best way, this one belongs on your TBR.

Lucian is the kind of morally gray hero who doesn’t just claim his woman, he reveres her. His devotion is intense, possessive, and unwavering, but it never overshadows Scarlett’s strength.

And Scarlett? She is everything. She’s survived trauma that could have shattered her, yet she rises from it stronger, sharper, and completely unbreakable. Watching her reclaim her power had me fully invested.

The chemistry is electric. The stakes are high. The emotions hit hard.

I genuinely couldn’t decide who I loved more, so honestly, I’ll take them both.

If you’re a mafia romance reader who wants grit, heat, and heart all wrapped into one, this book will not disappoint.

4.5 ⭐'s rounded up
Eyes of the Unholy is part of The Sin Syndicate an interconnected standalone series that you do not have to read book one, Eyes on You to follow, but you would be missing out if you did not start there.
The anticipation I had for this book was unreal! It did not disappoint!!! I devoured it in one sitting, I could not put it down. Lucian and Scarlett could not be more perfect! The instant connection, the angst, the story, the chemistry, the spice.. just phenomenal.
Lucian has his Irish accent and touch her and ☠️ vibes. Scarlett is fierce and sass rolled up in a small package.

The story continues with Lachlan....

I am beyond excited to review Eyes of the Unholy by Evie James! This is one of those stories that digs its claws into you and refuses to let go. I inhaled the over half of the book this weekend.

Eyes of the Unholy by Evie James is the kind of dark romance that pulls you in slowly and then refuses to let you go. The deeper this story goes into the Sin Syndicate world, the more intense and layered everything becomes and I’m honestly loving where it’s heading.

Scarlett’s journey is heartbreaking but powerful. She’s been conditioned to see herself as disposable, yet beneath all that pain is this fierce resilience that refuses to die. Watching her slowly reclaim pieces of herself while navigating such a brutal world made her incredibly easy to root for. And Lucian… he’s the perfect kind of morally gray protector. Ruthless when it comes to the people who hurt her, but unexpectedly gentle with Scarlett in a way that feels deeply earned.

The chemistry between them is electric. The spice is definitely there, bold, emotional, and charged with tension, but what stood out most to me is how much it’s tied to trust and vulnerability. Every intimate moment feels like another layer of Scarlett learning that she deserves to be wanted, protected, and seen. That “burn the world to keep her safe” devotion hit me right in the chest. And the sexy scenes were perfect! I have to say they are my favorite couple. And knowing Evie, I'm sure it's not the last time we see them.

What's great about Evie's books is that they can all be read as a standalone, but together they build something even bigger and more intense. And I have to say, book two is my favorite so far. Watching this story unfold and being part of the team while it all comes to life has been incredibly special.

If you love dark mafia romance with heart, danger, and devotion that borders on obsession, this one absolutely delivers.

Tropes you’ll find:

Forced proximity
“Touch her and die” energy
Dangerous protector
Morally gray MMC
Vigilante justice
Scarred heroine reclaiming her power
He falls first

Huge thanks to Evie for letting me be part of the journey, seeing book 2 come to life was amazing. I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for us. All opinions are my own. 💛

Amazing 2nd Book!

This is second book in Evie's series and with this being the story of Scarlett and Lucian... WOW!

The story pretty much follows on from Book 1, with Lucian's attempt at kidn@pping Scarlett...

Lucian is the definition of morally grey. He wants to take Scarlett to get back at her Dad, but what he doesn't realise is he is actually unlocking the door of a cage she has been stuffed into.

He is incredibly caring and respectful to Scarlett, with a dark 'touch her and die' vibe - plus he is Irish. What's not to love?

Scarlet, oh Scarlett... Evie DOES NOT write weak female main characters in her books. She is a little spitfire hiding beneath the mask and I loved seeing the real Scarlett and also watching as she and Lucian develops their relationship.

These two were made for each other!

It was also great to see some familiar faces back!

The story itself carries on from Eyes on You (Book 1) and so comes with trigger warnings so please head to Evie's website to give them a read.

With this book, Evie just throws you into the action straight away and it has a much faster pace.

These guys work in the dark and shadows, with their activities not exactly being legal but they have a code (a very deep wide line in the sand) and with powers that be partaking in some truely horrific activites, it is satisfying to know that the Syndicate have taken things into their own hands to make those at the heart... pay.

This part of the story hasn't concluded so I cannot wait to see what else happens and how Evie eventually concludes this running story.

With a formidable guy and a fiesty, smart lady this book is utterly brilliant and comes complete with action, mystery and of course... spice!

Highly recommend!

Evie truly doesn't disappoint with the unhinged, darker souls, and spice with such amazing redemption arcs for every mafia daddy.

Lucian is up front this time and he's become a man of desire and need when a fiery, red headed Scarlett surprises him in every possible way. The true strength and testament hidden beneath the habit disguised as mercy.

Right away this story takes off with a run, not a jog and has fire leading the way! The intention, the initial plan quickly falls through when Lucian experiences something he hasn't in a long time - an unexplainable, aching pull to Scar and what was just a job quickly transformed into obsession, protection and devotion with no restraint and no fear of tainting the soul.

The fight doesn't end and they are fighting against more than they realize as they uncover the truth behind Scarlett's disappearance - why, who, where and what are the questions being asked and she herself is as left in the dark. Scarlett has scars that run deeper than any blade could and she still has strength to fight for life, for breath, for room in a world that the void swallowed up and didn't question it. Lucian, is the spot of light in the dark that she doesn't realize is there to save her from the black, not mock her with the reminder that her light WAS dimmed but not for long.

Quickly, this duo of fire and ice become a team of relentless work to bring down all involved in not just Scarlett's story but others who have disappeared with the right amount of zeros. They have a single goal, a united force of revenge to right the wrongs and bring down the worst of the worst. The Syndicate may be dark, governed by no laws, painted red with dripping ledgers but there's one thing they don't stand for - and they are about to bring it to the damn ground.

Dark Mafia / Forced Proximity / Suspense / HEA

Sin Syndicate #2 - We first met Lucian Byrnes in Book 2 of Broken Heroes and again in Book 1 of Sin Syndicate. He and the other owners of Club Xyst are now part of this elite group to help take down powerful, self-entitled men who remarkably mirror some men in our present-day world. After her mother died, Scarlett Hayes was sent off to Spain to finish school and then join a convent. The men of the Sin Syndicate believe that she could be used to bring down her corrupt father, the Mayor of New York. On Christmas night, while she prays in the local church, Lucian steps in to abduct her, but she is no meek lamb. She fights him off, gets away, and a very surprised Lucian is pissed off at himself. He has one more chance to snag her, and it will reveal a whole new side of her they didn’t expect. This girl has more scars from her past than her own father didn’t know about. Scarlett’s obviously has trust issues, and with Lucian, she may just be able to heal. This was an incredible story of perseverance, courage, and sheer determination. Thank you, Evie, for another wild ride … can’t wait to see what happens with Lachlan.

I love how Evie always writes the best FMCs, and Scarlett was no exception. Even though she endured brutal abuse, she was strong and resilient. I absolutely loved her for Lucian! What an epic read this was. This book exceeded my expectations. It was everything I could have wanted in a dark mafia romance. The narrative is masterfully crafted. The words flowed effortlessly, drawing you into the story. The main characters Lucian and Scarlett were incredible. I loved how these two are well matched and how they complement one another. I especially loved that Scarlett had this fierceness to her, that she's not to be underestimated. And of course Lucian, I just love that he goes to whatever length he needs to to protect those he cares about. This one really hits the nail on the head. I savored every bit of this story. I highly recommend reading. It won't disappoint. This book is a must-read for anyone that likes forced proximity, vigilante justice, a morally gray MMC, and touch her and die vibes.

A huge thank you to the author for a copy of this. All opinions are my own and freely expressed.

Sometimes the answers to your prayers are in the hands of your enemies.

Lucian is a good man, but he keeps his heart walled up. He prefers to keep his mind focused on business. Unfortunately for him his business includes a feisty, beautiful, red headed nun named Scarlett that’s about to give him a run for his money. She was definitely not what he expected. I’ll let you read the story for yourself, but it’s full of intrigue, trauma bonding, action sequences, healing, spice and love. Mafia romance with a twist. Absolutely love it!

Absolutely obsessed. From the first page I was absolutely hooked. The pacing of this story was perfect. It never felt like it was going too fast or too slow. Lucian had me absolutely swooning. I loved everything about his character and the way he loved Scarlett. Even after everything Scarlett went through she still came out as a woman who knew what she wanted and was strong and capable. Evie James absolutely knows how to write mafia romance that will have you reading the book all in one setting. Cannot wait for more Sin Syndicate books.

Thank you to Evie James for an ARC copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Sin Syndicate called readers back - and just when I thought Eyes on You controlled me, Eyes of the Unholy proved otherwise!! Not only do we reconnect with the couple who started it all, but we get to explore Lucian and his story with Scarlett. These two characters felt as though they were always destined to exist for each other. The fiery passion, of Scarlett, with Lucian's relentless, unyielding stubbornness made their dynamic absolutely electrifying. Having the chance to experience their story was an incredible treat.

As much as I'll always love the possessiveness Nikolai graced upon the pages, it paled in comparison to Lucian's intensity. Lucian didn't just say "you're mine" - he embodied it in a way that completely shattered reality when it came to Scarlett. Darkness encased Lucian and he almost wore it like a badge of honor if that meant keeping Scarlett safe. What I think gave Lucian greater depth was his balance of tenderness and power. He knew when Scarlett needed him to push and when to offer a gentler hand. That duality allowed every facet of his character to shine throughout the story. As readers, we are party to his raw determination-an intensity that radiates sensuality-while also witnessing the compassion that tempers it.

Scarlett - when I first met her I wasn't sure if I would connect with her character. I was nervous I wouldn't like her as much as I did Lacey(Lyla), from Eyes on You. However, the strength written behind her character gave her an edge I felt exhilarated to read. Her tenacity not only kept her surviving, but kept Lucian on his toes and gave him a constant challenge. This giving a plethora of opportunities for delicious tension, and had me yearning for their forced proximity to erupt. I don't want to say they balanced each other, if anything, Scarlett was Lucian's reason to seep deeper into the Syndicate.

Going into this second installment, I wondered if we’d get more. More darkness, more spice, more everything and Evie James absolutely delivered. Spice and heat don't just increase-they both ignite throughout the chapters. The spice is taken to an entirely new level with a playroom, toy play, and several very scrumptious scenes making us wish we could trade places with Scarlett.

Now, the waiting begins for Lachlan...

In Eyes of the Unholy, Evie James creates a world that feels both expansive and claustrophobic. The story opens with a stark contrast: the sacred silence of a sanctuary versus the profane violence of the underworld. This sets the tone for a novel that isn't just about crime families, but about the clash between light and dark. Evie James uses the "Forced Proximity" trope not just as a romantic plot device, but as a crucible. Forcing two people from opposite backgrounds to find common ground while the world outside burns.

Eyes of the Unholy is not your typical "mafia princess" story. Evie James starts the clock in a place of supposed peace, a church on Christmas night of all nights, and immediately shatters it. We meet Scarlett at her lowest depths, a woman living in the shadow of a traumatic past, seeking solace in faith. When she is snatched from her sanctuary, the story pivots from a quiet character study into a high-octane endurance thriller.

What follows is a masterful execution of the Forced Proximity trope. Scarlett and Lucian aren't just stuck in a room; they are stuck in a world where everyone wants a piece of them for the wrong reasons.

The writing style is intuitive and punchy. Evie James doesn't waste words on fluff; every scene is designed to either heighten the romantic tension or advance the high-stakes thriller plot. The pacing is relentless, making it one of those "just one more chapter" reads that will keep you up until 3:00 AM or in my case even longer! I could not put this book down!

The heat level is high, as expected from the genre, but it never feels disconnected from the plot. The intimacy is used as a language for the characters to communicate things they aren't yet ready to say out loud.

My Final Thoughts:

Eyes of the Unholy is a standout in the dark mafia subgenre. It is a story of salvage, fierce loyalty, and the kind of love that thrives in the dark. It manages to be gritty and "unholy" while still offering a sense of hope and justice that is deeply satisfying.

Lucian’s Irish & sexy & dangerously lethal, possessive of his family & has a brick wall around his emotions & does not let his guard down. Enter surprising Scarlett, the daughter of the NYC mayor. She seems like a sweet harmless nun. Lucian thinks it’s an easy snatch & run situation. He plans to kidnap her & marry her to someone in the suburbs & hidden to gain leverage on her corrupt father.
On Christmas Scar goes to church to get away. Lucian sees her praying at the alter, but when he attempts his easy plan…instead he gets a kick@ss spider money of a spitfire who knows how to fight back & leave damage behind. She’s desperate to escape the PR cage her father has forced her in since she was 14.
Evie wrote Scarlett as such a powerful character. Her life is such a tragedy & so lonely, she’s trapped & messed up from the trauma, but she won’t ever give up the fight.
Lucian is surprising as well. He falls for her the sec she split his lip 😆. Now that he finally has kidnapped her the night she gave her dad the slip, He is becoming the perfect morally gray man that will burn the world down on anyone that made her feel less of a goddess worth worshipping. He earns her trust & is patient w/her & helps her recreate herself & become confident & even more powerful .
This book feels like the world right now w/ all the political corruption, skin trafficking & large money transfers all revolving around religious places worldwide w/ corrupt royalty, presidents & the filthy rich that surround them. The syndicate won’t hear of this. They will protect the innocent young women. Scar doesn’t sit on the sidelines either. She’ll help em take down everyone including her dad!! I ate this book up! Best mafia romance w/ such bad@ssery action!! I can’t wait for the next book!!
Don’t worry, the spice is spicy!! In my personal opinion it’s a 5🌶️ out of 5 🌶️.
Def read this amazing book!! I’m picky about mafia books & this was ❤️‍🔥

Welcome back to the chaos of the Sin Syndicate! I am officially obsessed because Lucian’s story was everything I didn't know I needed. If you’ve been following Evie James’s world through Eyes on You or The Broken Heroes Trilogy, you already know Lucian is a force, but seeing him center stage is a total game-changer. The setup is wild: he plans to kidnap the Mayor of NYC’s daughter as revenge, only to find out she’s a literal nun. But Scarlett is definitely not the quiet, submissive girl he expected; she is a total fireball of energy, and their first meeting is explosive in the best way possible.

What really blew me away, though, was the emotional depth behind the "mafia bad guy" exterior. Lucian is 100% a dark hero—controlled, intense, and morally grey—but underneath all that, he is a protective, caring man who would quite literally burn the world down to keep Scarlett safe. Watching Scarlett’s journey from survival and trauma to reclaiming her own agency and sexuality was so powerful and felt incredibly real. It’s a high-octane thriller with political corruption and sinister secrets, but it’s grounded by these raw conversations about trust and family. And the best part? There is no third-act breakup. These two choose each other and stick together through the fire, which is such a breath of fresh air in this genre.

Honestly, this book is a masterclass in the "Forced Proximity" trope. It’s gritty, "unholy," and high-heat, but it never loses sight of the heart-pounding plot involving vigilante justice and a high-stakes endurance thriller. I could not put this book down; the pacing is relentless, and the chemistry is just... chef’s kiss. If you want a mafia romance that balances insane steam with actual character growth and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, you need to dive into this one immediately.

He doesnt just fall he chooses

Eyes of the Unholy takes everything that made this world addictive and pushes it deeper into emotional intensity, darker tension, and higher stakes.
Lucian is a fascinating character because he embodies contradiction. He’s ruthless, morally gray, and unflinching when it comes to violence — yet when it comes to her, there’s a softness beneath the brutality that feels completely earned. That duality is what makes him so compelling. He’s capable of destruction, but with her, there’s restraint. Protection. Devotion.
The tension in this story is sharp from the start. The chemistry between the characters is darker, heavier, and layered with the kind of emotional weight that makes every interaction feel charged. The “touch her and die” energy is undeniable, but what stood out most was how that possessiveness is balanced with vulnerability. Lucian isn’t just dangerous — he’s deeply invested.
What I loved most about this book is the contrast in Lucian himself: a man capable of brutality who handles the woman he loves like she’s fragile, like she matters. That complexity gives the romance real depth and makes the emotional payoff feel earned rather than rushed.
The pacing keeps the tension simmering while the stakes continue to rise, creating a story that feels intense, consuming, and impossible to put down.
High heat. High stakes. And a love that feels dangerous in the best possible way.
Lucian doesn’t just fall — he chooses. And once he does, there’s no turning back.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just finished Eyes of the Unholy and wow… I am not okay. This book consumed me. Body, mind, and soul.

From the very first chapter, I was pulled into a world that felt dangerous, intoxicating, and impossible to walk away from. The tension? Suffocating in the best way. The chemistry? Absolutely feral. Every glance, every touch, every whispered threat had my heart racing.

Lucian… that man is darkness wrapped in control and quiet intensity. He’s ruthless when he needs to be, protective in a way that makes you weak in the knees, and layered with so much depth that peeling him back felt like unraveling something sacred. And Scarlett? She is strength and fire and vulnerability all tangled together. She doesn’t just survive the darkness — she stares it down.

Together, they are explosive. Twisted. Passionate. But also unexpectedly tender. Beneath all the chaos and intensity is a love story that feels raw and earned. The kind that hurts before it heals.

Lucian and Scarlett will always hold a special place in my heart. Their story wrecked me, stitched me back together, and then left its mark permanently.

If you love morally gray characters, high-stakes tension, and romance that feels a little dangerous and a lot consuming… this one will own you.

I’m still recovering — and honestly? I don’t want to. 🖤
