Percevan / Tassilo #9

L'Arcantane noire

Rate this book

When dashing knight Percevan encounters a maiden about to be burned at the stake, he rushes to save her. But is this beautiful creature as innocent as she seems, or does she harbor a dangerous secret?

This volume sees a return to form with a complete stand-alone story. It’s well-paced, has strong suspense, and offers plenty of variety. On the other hand, Leturgie’s plot is unnecessarily convoluted with superfluous characters and locations.

SPOILER

Guimly and the horses are immediately suspicious of the woman and Kervin wants to leave her behind.

Percevan is captivated by her beauty and refuses, so Kervin leaves in a huff but quickly becomes depressed.

He entertains at a nearby castle but is so gloomy the lord kicks him out. However, the baron overhears a drunken Kervin mention a witch and calls him back.

Meanwhile, at the witch’s behest, Percevan has infiltrated a different castle in search of a magic relic called the arcantane. He battles his way to the baron, but is overwhelmed by guards and has to flee.

However, the baron departs to warn yet another lord in another castle that the arcantane is in danger. Percevan and the witch follow behind.

Meanwhile, Kervin has told his story to the first baron, who has revealed the history of the witch. She has already bewitched and killed several men and would have been executed had Percevan not freed her. percevan is in great danger because he is following the same path taken by her other victims. The baron and Kervin rush to the castle containing the arcantane to warn the 3rd baron.

(There are a total of 5 barons, but none of them are really important. It does get kind of confusing at times. The plot only needed one.)

Percevan outpaces the 1st and 2nd baron and arrives at the third castle where he takes the arcantane from the 3rd baron. He gives it to the witch and they continue northward into the wastes, towards a forge where the relic will be activated, granting the witch immortality and costing Percevan his life.

Barons 1,2, and 3 and Kervin meet up and are joined by 2 more barons. They all follow Percevan except for 3 who stays behind.

The 3rd baron goes to get aid from Balkis. He revealed the truth to percevan and the two hatched a plan. Percevan breaks twigs so the others can follow his path.

He meets the witch’s wolves and her dwarf friends. They travel deep in the mountain to the forge.

Meanwhile the pursuers draw closer, following Percevan’s signs. They fight the wolves and one of the barons is killed.

Balkis arrives and joins the party.

Meanwhile Percevan is sucked into the arcantane and sees the witch’s true form. He battles with her lover, an ancient afflicted mage who cannot leave the arcantane.

The wizard realizes that Percevan is contaminated by magic hurls him from the arcantane, but Percevan drags the mage along and the ancient one crumbles to dust once outside his refuge. The crystal with the witch falls into the forge and the whole place blows up.

Balkis aids in the escape, but her role is minor and could have been cut. It seems she was included mainly to further an ongoing romance subplot.
