Pittsburgh's Bridges is THE authoritative book on engineering, architecture, design and beauty of the City of Bridges.
Pittsburgh is different than any other river city is the sheer number and variety of bridge types. Each location presents a different challenge: here a long span, here a bridge coming right out of a tunnel, here steel mill hot metal bridges converted to new use.
Differing trusses, arches and suspensions, different decades, prominent companies such as Union Iron, Dravo and American Bridge, famous designers such as Lindenthal and Roebling, innovators such as the Weichart Truss, all three listed by the way as German immigrant engineers who taught themselves bridge-making. The list goes on.
This means that a drive around the city, past many of the bridges in the book (on 2nd Ave, US 28, Ohio River Boulevard or PA 837, for example), is a rewarding learning experience.
Kidney's book should be on the shelf behind the desk for regular reference and learning.
