The Rock, Pop, and Country Gospel: Backstories and Biblical Wisdom from Fifty (Mostly) Iconic Songs

Rate this book
Songwriter Harlan Howard famously said, “Country music is three chords and the truth.” But truth, and specifically biblical truth, exists in many other music genres, too. This book explores the spiritual heart of popular music through an eclectic collection of fifty songs, some of which you know by heart, and a few you probably don’t.
Delve into the fascinating stories about how each song in this multi-genre collection came to be written, and see how God and His message of love, hope, and encouragement can be found within their lyrics.
This book will resonate with both new and mature Christian believers but will also be interesting to those who just enjoy music or those beginning to search for truth. The messages are written to be both encouraging and challenging, and its short chapters make the book suitable for one-a-day devotional reading.
Each chapter the song and its writer(s)/performer(s); a QR code link to the song on Spotify; several lines of the song’s lyrics; the song’s backstory, in the words of its writers when possible; a scripture verse corresponding to the lyric, and; an exploration of the verse’s themes and the real-life application of its wisdom.
Let this book open your eyes and ears to the reality that God can be found on your favorite rock, pop, or country radio station, and not just in a church hymnal.

“God has found you because he never left you.”

An engaging exploration of Christian themes in or suggested by modern rock, pop, and country music, emphasizing songs released in the last thirty years. While a surprising number of the secular recordings have explicit Christian connections, some are included because of themes they touch.

Each short chapter opens with a QR code link to a Spotify recording of the song in question. Fehn discusses thee song’s origin, development, and popularity. Then he suggests a Bible verse which resonates with the artists’ theme, followed by a brief message on applying that verse, including relevant thoughts from other sources. The chapter closes with questions for further reflection.

Readers might wish to cover only one chapter a day and reflect on Fehn’s message as a daily devotional. He also suggests journaling to record insights.

“It’s not about perfection, but pursuit—a daily life of surrender, transformation, and love.”
