Sometimes, the most important thing a mom can do is have fun.
Kelly Conroy stepped into rally school an exhausted mother of two. She left a racecar driver. Over the next two years, Conroy ditched society’s expectations as the modern mother consumed by sleep schedules and selflessness, and entered into a new era of rediscovering fun. The result is Your Mom Races Rally, a moving memoir about putting yourself first.
Conroy had never driven stick before, let alone competed in a mud-slinging motorsport that regularly sends cars careening into trees. Over the course of two years she prioritized her own joy and sanity, even at the expense of her family’s routine, meal plan and bank account. Conroy attended rally school, wriggled across oil-stained garage floors to upgrade her 40-year old BMW nicknamed “Nessie,” and made her way to the starting line. Along the way, she discovered a vast network of women racers, off-roaders and fellow badasses cheering her on at each step.
This is a story of reclaiming and rewriting your own life. It’s about setting an example for your children by living out your dreams ― not someone else’s. For all the moms missing their previous selves, wondering where she went, this is your invitation to set her free again.
This book isn’t just about a woman who rallies. It’s about a mother who lost herself and was brave enough to decide she matters just as much as everyone else and deserves to know and remind those around her who she is outside of just “mom.” Kelly’s story is powerful because she’s being authentically honest, stating true facts about gaps in societal expectations for women versus men and how those gaps show up even when you think they aren’t. I can relate so much in having experienced postpartum depression and 2 years after having my daughter still feeling lost / like I don’t matter outside of being her mom. It’s such a sad reality but it is so empowering to know that this woman finally put her foot down and made a difference for no one but herself. Maybe that’s something I can do too.
A book for people who are curious about motorsports, but more significantly, a book for moms who have lost track of themselves while parenting and who need to inject some FUN into their lives. Me, I'm talking about me! I didn't know what rally was really (cars? dirt? something?), but the result of reading this is that I know I am not alone in the fact that as a mother I have not prioritized my own fun and that has poorly affected myself and affected my family. In the last few days I have started a list of personal goals - just for ME, not ones that also benefit my family unit! - like tap dance again and join a plein air painting group.
I can’t even remember the last book I read cover to cover—embarrassing as that is to admit—but Your Mom Races Rally completely pulled me in. It’s inspiring, relatable, and genuinely heartfelt. Whether you’re a parent, chasing a passion, or just desperately trying to hold onto who you are (or once were) while life gets busy, this story really resonates.
