Supergirl Next Door is such a creative and refreshing concept for a comic, especially with Valentine’s Day right around the corner! The idea of a fun, adventure-romance themed around love immediately interested me. What I didn’t realize going in was that each issue would spotlight a different DC character, which ended up being one of my favorite aspects of the book!!

I really enjoyed this issue and found myself fully locked in at multiple points, to the extent that the emotions felt like they were flooding right off the page. Jay Garrick’s love story in particular really stood out to me. It was simple, heartfelt, and powerful, while still being packed with adventure, an unexpectedly moving highlight of the book for me.

There were several other standout stories as well. Wonder Woman’s romantic adventure was lighthearted and charming, paired with artwork that perfectly matched her fun and hopeful personality. Guy Gardner’s segment was genuinely so funny, and I loved how they explored love through his very specific, chaotic lens. Martian Manhunter’s story offered a more introspective and emotional perspective on love, and that one really resonated with me. And of course, the opening Supergirl story was fantastic, sweet, meaningful, and the perfect way to set the tone for the entire comic!

I’m genuinely glad I picked this up. It felt different in the best way possible, and it even sparked my interest in checking out more characters (like Swamp Thing) and comics I might not have gravitated toward otherwise.

Supergirl: cute. Bringing back the name Linda. Just a girl missing home <3 5/5

Jay Garrick: they put Hal Jordan where Alan Scott was supposed to be >:( had no idea who Judy was so that was actually helpful 2/5

Harley & Ivy: god I love the voice they gave to Ivy 😩🫶🏻 5/5

Guy Gardner: tell me you don’t know who Guy Gardner is without telling me you don’t know who Guy Gardner is. He’s not an alpha bro or a fucking misogynistic homophobic maga republican. Nathan Fairbairn needs to never touch my social worker gym teacher guy Gardner ever again or any comic character. Dnf/5

Wonder Woman: such cute art! Love queer literature. Reminds me of jester from critical role 5/5

Swamp thing: Bro your wife is so fine are you looking for a third? 4/5

Martians: Jemm, J’ohnn, & M’gann??? I love them all sm reminds me of that one short story with John Kent telling Clark he loves him until Clark tells the entire world he loves them 5/5

Oliver Queen: you simp <3 4/5

3.5 ⭐️’s.

The different stories in this comics were appealing and the art is amazing. I enjoyed a few of them where others didn’t grab my attention as much.

Still a very cozy and soft read.

Out of this collection of stories I enjoyed most of them. There were only 2 I really didn’t like, 2 I only half enjoyed, but the other 4 I really liked. Especially the J’onn one which has to be my favorite solely for the inclusion of Jemm!! But let’s run down the list real quick for quick notes on each story:

Starting off with the cover story following supergirl! The art style is really cute and I think it does a good job at setting the tone for the rest of the book. The awww factor was up there by the end but it took a moment for me to really be pulled into it. I have no prior knowledge of a character ever filling the role of being a close, basically boyfriend, to Linda during this time so it logically makes sense that something like that would happen. And the two genuinely share such a sweet moment as they bond over stargazing and she is able to describe the stars that appear to her in her dreams. Prompting the kid to do something social for Kara and build a star machine based on her descriptions as a Valentine’s Day gift, which is not such a sweet gesture. But this OC for Kara’s friend also feels like the reason I haven’t read a lot of the author other works, namely WFA. It’s really just not my style long term, but I can understand the appeal and the emotions feel well developed.

The second story is where it goes off the rails for me as we follow Jay Garrick as he once again faces Doctor Elemental, who has Mercury’s staff and has cut Jay off from the speed force. Now the strong part of this was really strong, the paneling is on another level as Jay’s life flashes before his eyes for a few pages like film reel playing out. It primarily focuses around his life with Joan and the family she has built around them. It’s very sweet and I have to admit this section has told me more about Doctor Elemental and his connection to Jay than anything in the recent JSA run where he showed up for me the first time. There are still a lot of comics I need to read, lol. But this history lesson did a great job at showing that Doctor Elemental was the scientist working in the lab where Jay got his powers, which I never knew. For some odd reason though there is an image of the NEW 52 Justice league #1 on the News, idk why’s up with that. Also very heartbreaking then warming to see Jay and Joan go from not being able to have kids of their own, to finding out about their daughter lost in time with Jay eventually saving her. As the life flashing before his eyes section ends, Jay uses the power of love to get his strength and even without the speed force…lay an absolute beat down on Doctor elemental. And that’s really where the story looses me, it just feels half baked and off. But the story pulls me right back in to shoot the “awwwww” factor through the roof as Jay shares a moment with his daughter at Joan’s grave where they watch a movie together, just like one of the first dates he had with Joan.

But this next story really takes the ball and slams a home run. Nicole Maines telling the story of Harley and Ivy getting together from Ivy’s perspective in JUST TEN pages is a work of genius. Of the J’onn story with Jemm wasn’t in this collection then this would be my favorite one no contest. It’s just so well developed and slowly seeing Ivy treat every human as an object that needs to be stopped from destroying the planet, to surprising herself when she enjoys Harley’s talks, to growing angry at the way joker treats Harley like an object and how Harley just takes it, and to finally showing her love by breaking Harley out of there and treating her like the only thing she loves in this entire world as the retreat to the condemned suburb we saw in BTAS where Ivy has to give Harley a shot in order to even survive, lol. This section also has my favorite bit of reflection from Harley, maybe ever when she says:

“It’s a fear of mortality, I think. If people accepted that climate change was real, they’d have to accept that the planet can die in the first place. And if that’s true, that means they can die. It’s way easier to pretend the planet is this unkillable thing ‘cause, for whatever reason, that makes them feel unkillable themselves. Even though in my own personal experience, people are super-duper killable. ‘Specially with acid.

I think this next story is the one I hate the most, the Guy Gardner slander is OFF THE CHARTS. Listen I know the guy can be brash, but he is never in the realm of podcast bro brash, I refuse to believe that utterly and completely. The whole story revolves around Guy popping into a bar, buying some drinks for the guy next to him who clearly pointed out he was saving it for his boyfriend, Guy ignoring that and asking him if he was waiting for a girl, giving him unsolicited advice on how women don’t “say what they mean and how their body language talks differently” then shows off a podcast he has with booster. Now I have to admit the podcast description being two heroes talking about their adventures is 100% something booster would do if he thought it could make him famous, lol, but the Guy personality here doesn’t give me hope that booster isn’t getting roped into some slander. Guy, having already been drinking, then flies off as he gets an alert on his ring about a problem at STAR. He flies over and refuses to listen to the head scientist in charge of the incident as she asks for him to wait for Superman as they are dealing with an entity that popped out from another dimension. Guy of course rushes in to face the creature, only to find a blue alien like creature with some kind of text crawling over its goopy body and the same text floating around it on certain areas. It doesn’t speak any language known in this dimension but guy couldn’t care less about any of that as the alien also has an appealing figure. All attempts to Cronin the alien with his ring or generally get close to it fail as it speaks in some language that has arrows and ti seems like it shifts things in space as it talks. At one point it gets real close to Guy and even rips his shirt off, making him think it is trying to communicate via body language…only to end up punched in the face after he tried communicating that way. As Guy woke up the creature finished whatever it was doing and used the tech STAR had to bloop itself back to its dimension, probably anyway. Yeah that didn’t have any “awwwww” factor to it, more of an “eughhhhh”

The next one is one of my least favorites as well, not because Wonder Woman is getting home and relaxing by reading some romance fantasy novel…nah that’s all fun and dandy, my problem is with the romance fantasy novel itself as Diana falls asleep and suddenly dreams that she is in their world. The whole setting of this book is just entirely boring to me. Maybe that’s just me, but I saw the solution 20 miles away before Diana even fell asleep and it resolved that exact way. The whole story originally was about a main character torn between two people to get married to, only for their protector who is the same age and has been with them since birth to be right there the entire time. It was so clear that the main character was destined to be with that person instead, and then Diana gets thrust into the world and suddenly she becomes the main character and had to navigate while trying to resolve the plot and her the suitors off her back. She ends up finding the lasso of truth in a cave after some adventuring and on the way back Diana planned to throw it in a way that the real man character and the character she was meant to be with would touch it at the same time and their bond would be unified and found true. Instead she real main character of the book and her protector grabbed it at the same time, allowing them to realize their true love for each there and for the story to come to a proper close. The end, sleep well Diana.

This next story following swamp thing easily has my favorite art of the entire book though. Although it does complete very well with the Harley and Ivy story, as the art in that section was fantastic as well. The story itself here is a bit muddy to me (I guess that could be intentional based on the location) as it follows a story I’m only realizing now id unfamiliar to me: the first time Swamp thing and Abby Arcane meet. But like I said, Michael Shelfer needs a swamp thing book STAT because this ROCKS. I feel like I could talk for ages about the swamp thing design elements alone, and then the writer sees it up perfectly for the artist to just show off as it follows swamp thing watch Abby as she explores the swamp land, collecting edible natural materials, until a bunch of strange mushrooms start to pop up and the horrific mushroom creature that was once Mathew cable pops out to try and kill her, causing swamp thing to fight back and push Cable away and save and meet Abby for the first time. The story ends with swamp thing being woken up by Abby after he dozed off as that is all just a distant memory, but is this really how the first meeting went down? I wouldn’t have figured Cable would be any mushroom monster by their first meeting, actually I am unaware he has even been a mushroom monster. Am I crazy or do I just need to read more comics? Probably both.

And now the one that I can’t stop myself from mentioning, the J’onn story! I love this one so much, as it spins the tale of J’onn and M’Gann’s first meeting. He noticed the white Martian stealing some earth tech, like a TV, and enjoying local entertainment while hiding lot on a rock hut in a red dessert to stimulate the looks of back home. He didn’t know how to approach her at first, he saw so much of himself in her and realized that she may need him. But what does he do when he is unsure? He calls Jemm up and asks for advice! LOL, I love that so much. Jemm representation!! Hell yeah! J’onn decides to approach her with a housewarming gift, introducing himself one Martian to another. He comes in peace and with snacks and the two begin to bond over the next few months. She is able to bring out the Martian side of himself that he thought died alongside his wife and daughter and the rest of mars, but they are both survivors and they have found each other an can live together for mars. He brings her out into the world and shows her all of it, the world that has given him so much that he strives to give back to. M’gann shows J’onn how she got to earth. How her and a few others were trapped and the others killed, and J’onn promised to help her find the ones who did this. M’gann decided she wanted to be a hero as well, which means she needs a new identity. She met the rest of the Justice league and we even got a cameo from Jemm himself!! The story about coming to earth in a rocket and claiming to be J’onn’s cousin or adopted niece is a story that has been tried a few times in the past by other heroes, so Superman loves it when she proposes it as her backstory, lol. She soon found her own look as a hero and J’onn was there with open arms to bring her into the world and help quell her anxiety with something that has always helped him…a choco cookie. In his darkest hours it has brought him joy and reminds him of when he was the happiest. He compares M’gann to the cookie, how it can serve as a happy reminder that in a world away from her own it will always be there to remind her of home, just like how she reminds J’onn of home and how he hopes to be there for her. It’s a very touching stir and I absolutely love these two!

The last story is very sweet and did a great job at the bi text format and saying more with action than words, but the art itself just feels all over the place? I’m really n it sure wha it is about it, but there were moments things just seemed out of proportion (especially in action poses) or strangely derailed compared to other things. And for a story that heavily relies on the art to tell the story, that’s a big fault. But the story itself is just fine as well. It goes back to the JLA days where they operated out of a satellite. The A team was getting their butts handed to them by the secret society and Green Arrow couldn’t bear to hear Black Canary near death going from fighting mirror master to blockbuster in mere seconds. So instead of waiting back any more he jumped into a teleporter and right into the heart of the action. He jumped from helping batman take down Captain Cole, to helping Wonder Woman with Star sapphire, to helping flash with the floronic man, and so on and so on for a few other chargers I don’t fully recognize. He even had a bit of a solo fight with Merlin and after they both ran out of arrows the two decided to go hand to hand, only for Ollie to end it by picking up his knockout arrow and hitting Merlin with it manually. He finally caught up to Dinah kn to find she took down blockbuster herself, and the two embraced each other as they are surrounded by flaws and rubble and the power of love.

Overall the was a solid special, but compared to the other specials to come out recently it just didn’t feel like it hit as hard.

This was one of the best DC Anthology I have read. I liked most of the stories, and loved a bunch of them 3☆ average, but I'm tempted to rate it higher because I enjoyed so many of these stories a lot.

A dream of different stars - CRC Payne 4☆
(Supergirl)

Short but sweet. I love the stars myself so this was right up my alley. It was a very cute short story about homesickness and that there is more to people than meets the eye.

Running on Love - Dorado Quick 4☆
(Jay Garrick)

Maybe I'm just a sucker for love stories. True ones, filled with support, care, understanding and trust, not the toxic ones. This was cute and a little bit heartbreaking as well. It managed to completely introduce Jay Garrick as a character too, I feel like I've a decent idea of him as a person now, despite this being my first time reading about him.

Harlivy rehabilitated - Nicole Maines 3☆
(Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy)

This really is an Ivy story more than a Harley story. The art is really beautiful, I love the style! I liked Ivy a lot as well. Harley was there... And I get why she was written like she was her and it does make sense, but I don't particularly like silly/stupid Harley. Which... was kind of the point, I am aware.

Guy Gardner: Lover - Nathan Fairbairn 2.5☆
(Guy Gardner)

This... is a hard story to rate. Because Guy Gardner the alpha male podcast bro is annoying AF. And the only other tone I read a story including Guy, he was very similar, so I'm sure that's just who he is. Annoying to read about, good characterization. I liked the alien tbh.

Runaway Romantasy - Sarah Kunn 1,5☆
(Wonder woman)

I didn't like this one. It was very booktok romantasy coded and I understand what it's referencing and where it pulls from, and I can even say it did it well. But for me it took the worst parts of booktok/romantasy and put them together in a fanfic type story. And not the good fanfic type. I just didn't enjoy this one at all.

So long and good night - Rosie Knight
(Swamp Thing) 3.5☆

Another really cute story I really enjoyed. Very cute, amazing art, easy to understand even without really knowing the characters.

Like home - Alex Galer 5☆
(Martian Manhunter)

This might just be my favourite story yet. Having J'onn explain about the world to m'gan was great. I loved how their backstories were included and how they bonded, not just over their shared trauma but through media, new experiences and learning about a new planet. Not romantic, but definitely filled with love.

I love you, too - Dave Welgosz 2☆
(Green Arrow)

Very interesting story, with almost no dialog. I think it's good, and it will probably work better for other people. For me it didn't quite click, unfortunately.

First story: 4 stars, very cute supergirl story
Second story: 4 stars, good on the writer because the story was perfectly understandable even when I don't know the character.
Third story: 5 stars, very nicely written and I liked how everyone was characterized.
Fourth story: 4,5, funny, the tone was different from the others but it was a good idea, creative.
Fifth story: 3,5 cute but seems meant for a younger age than the rest and Idk if I like WW here
Sixth story: 3,75 cute, but nothing special.
Seventh story: 4, cute to see something not about romantic love in this special.
Eight story: 3 stars, just nothing special.

Part of my problem with this is that I'm comparing it to the very high standard set by the DC Pride specials, but I was a little disappointed. The stories are cute and enjoyable enough. I feel like they mostly stuck to very safe characters. Swamp Thing is about as obscure as this collection gets, except maybe for picking a less popular Flash. I feel like Wonder Woman's story wasn't written for her, which took me out of it. I think Bumblebee might have been a good character for the idea.
