April has never been this scandalous . Dive into Season II of the wildly popular The Rake Review series.

She never meant to provoke him.
He never meant to stop pretending.

Everard Trentham, Earl of Merevale, is done being misjudged. Society insists on seeing him as indulgent and unserious, a reputation he once allowed for the sake of his intelligence work. A rake is rarely suspected of substance. But after being skewered as April’s Rake Review target, Ever is finished with the performance and wants out.

Then Isabella Anstruther-Colbrook storms into his carefully ordered life.

Brilliant, impulsive, and dangerously bored, Isabella has no patience for matchmaking mamas or relentless family pressure. Marriage is the last thing she wants, and she is more than willing to court a little scandal to keep it at bay. From their first meeting, she sees straight through Ever’s carefully maintained façade, and instead of retreating, she proposes a solution.

A false courtship. Mutual protection.

She gains freedom from the marriage mart. He gains a shield for his privacy and an excuse to withdraw from society without comment.

Ever knows he should refuse. Isabella is perceptive, too alive, and far too tempting to be safe. But she already sees him as he is, not as the role he has played, and the bargain is difficult to resist.

What begins as pretense sharpens into something neither of them intended. Attraction deepens. Lines blur. And the lie meant to keep them free threatens to bind them more tightly than truth ever could.

A slow-burn, fake relationship, opposites-attraction, age-gap romance featuring a grumpy hero desperate for peace and a sunshine-bright troublemaker determined to avoid the altar at all costs.

Much Ado About April is Book 4 in the multi-author series The Rake Review, Season II. Each month of 2026, a new bachelor will fall prey to the Brazen Belle’s poison pen. Be sure to collect all twelve.

Tracy does angsty in a way I enjoy and I am not a big angst fan. Ever is basically a cinnamon roll, for Tracy. He is down bad, he is caught in a web of Isabella and he wants to be caught. Isabella comes to him with fake courting plan to help save her from the scumbags of the ton. Ever is Mr. April and doesn't want society to find out his secrets so he agrees as it helps him as well.

I really loved them together and I loved that he fell harder (as he should). He is still a little rough around the edges the way Tracy makes her men but he has such a caring and considerate side to him. I liked seeing Isabella's family in this story. Its nice having this world filled out. And the stepback is amazing again. I love the additional inclusion of them.

I want our historical romance gossip girl to get her own story? Will she make her own HEA as she has been leading others to theirs?

What a sizzling read!

A rake is a rake unless he is just putting on a show for the ton and everyone around him.. Everard thought he had everything planned out for his retirement from government until the one woman who desires sees him for who he truly is and becomes his biggest challenge yet..

Isabella has always lived her life as a scandal and she wants nothing more than to live her life the way she sees fit but first she has to get firmly on the shelf as spinster.. and to do that she has to snag April's Rake but when she gets close to him to finds out he isn't everything that the Rake Review makes him out to be..

Isabella and Everard never meant to fall in love they only meant to false relationship even tryst however.. a love affair sometimes becomes so much more than that.. because the heart gets involved.. and these two have an undeniable spark from the first kiss..

A slow burn with laughter, love and an amazing epilogue..

I can't wait to see what Tracy has up her sleeve next.

I can't wait to read the next Rake Review.

A really enjoyable April addition to the Rake Review Season Two.

Percival Everard Trentham (Ever), Earl of Merevale wasn’t meant for this title. He was a second son who secretly worked for the Crown and is currently finishing off his contract to take on his duties as earl. His reputation as a rake was wildly exaggerated but his reputation for drinking was well documented, or so he wanted people to think. He has been chosen for April’s rake by the Brazen Belle because of his wild parties and drinking.

Isabella (Isa) Anstruther-Colbrook was trouble. She previously worked for the Brazen Belle but her sister insisted she give it up. She now feels so bored with life that she defies society rules to bring some excitement to her life. She wants more than convention will allow her. Her sister is married to a very wealthy and astute businessman Weston Whittaker who Ever was secretly partnered with in a business venture to help increase the coffers of his estate which has been left in dire straits from his father and brother.

Isa was being pursued by a gentleman she didn’t want to marry so when she finds out some of Ever’s secrets she convinces him to pretend to court her to put the other gentleman off then they can break off the courtship. He agrees but secretly they both don’t want to end the relationship. Ever believes he’s too old for her she disagrees. He is impressed with her maturity when faced with danger and the aftermath of a fight that badly injures Ever.

He has plans to move away from London for a quiet but productive life in his favourite home in Derbyshire but Isa enjoys the buzz of London. As part of their pretend courtship Ever invites Isabella and her family to his country estate. He had a disfunctional family life as a child but found himself enjoying having his rather dilapidated home filled with people enjoying each other’s company. Unsurprisingly Isabella and Ever grow closer and the reasons Ever had for not getting involved with Isabella slowly disappear.

His job with the Crown calls him back to London and breaks Isabella’s heart. Ever has to try to convince Isabella his heart belongs to her without being near her and communicating with her. Her brother in law Weston gave Ever some advice before he leaves for London. Ever tells Weston to keep Isabella safe for him.

Unfortunately his time in London for the Crown wasn’t written about, which I was a bit disappointed about as it left me wondering if his case was completed as it involved one of his friends. Ever is not convinced he did enough to show Isabella that he was invested in their relationship. He knows he hurt her before he left. Will she forgive him? You will have to read to find out!

I found this book a joy to read. It flowed well and I enjoyed the banter between Ever and Isabella. The chemistry between them was fantastic and fun to read. The characters were well written and the story had me hooked. There was a lovely epilogue too.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys slow burn but steamy romance with a bit of intrigue and excitement.

Thanks to Booksirens for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

Everard Trentham is presented as April's Rake from the Brazen Belle, but what he is presenting to Society is a facade of drunken dissolution. Instead, he has been working behind his masque as an agent for the King. But after many years of playing these roles, and the unexpected inheritance of an impoverished earldom and the responsibilities of correcting his brother's mistakes, Ever is looking forward to his retirement from spycraft, and leaving that image behind. Except it is brought to the forefront again by the Rake Review.

Behind the scenes, he has business dealing with the Duke of Mercer and brilliant American engineer, Weston Whitaker (Tall, Dark, and December). This brings him into the sphere of their sister in law, Isabella Anstruther Colbrook. Despite a hidden attraction to her, Ever is convinced she is not for him, being the sister of his friends and partners, and far younger than him. But temptation becomes unavoidable when she strikes a deal with him to help her avoid being trapped by an unwanted suitor. As Isa and Ever act out their charade, Isa and Ever show each other that they see each other beyond their projected reputations and images, and the attraction burns bright. Both want more than a temporary fake relationship, but Ever is reluctant to breach that boundary. Isa works to push him beyond their agreed upon ruse, and wants more than a temporary affair, but is not certain if that is what Ever wants, and how to pursue it.

Sweet, spicy age-gap historical romance, that is linked to a previous Rake Review story (December from Season 1 of the Rake Review) but enjoyable on it's own.

Everard “Ever” Trentham, Earl of Merevale, the Brazen Belle’s pick for Mr. April, has spent years convincing society he’s nothing more than a rake and a sot. He’s actually a razor‑sharp agent counting the minutes until he can retire to his quiet country estate, preferably far from people, noise, and anything resembling society's idea of fun.

Enter Isabella “Isa” Anstruther‑Colbrook, known as Madam Mischief, a woman so bored with society she might spontaneously combust. Naturally, she decides the cure is crashing Ever’s masquerade - the one place she absolutely shouldn’t be - and suddenly the grump who avoids her at every turn can’t seem to escape her at all.

What follows is a delicious slow burn of fake courtship, opposites attracting with alarming force, and one age‑gap romance where the sunshine troublemaker drags the grumpy earl straight out of his self‑imposed exile. He wants peace. She wants scandal. Together, they create sparks bright enough to light up all of London.

And as always, Tracy Sumner delivers the goods; lush writing, irresistible chemistry, & characters who feel so alive you swear you’ve met them at a ball. She writes heat with heart, humor with elegance, & intimacy that feels earned, emotional, & utterly irresistible. When Tracy turns up the steam, it’s never gratuitous - it’s storytelling. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tropes: age gap; MMC is a former spy; MFC was a Ton gossip; fake courtship
Steam level: 3

3.5 stars I wanted to round up, because this started promisingly, but it ends up middle-of-the-road. I love a sexy older (but not too old lol) former spy as MMC, a guy who's been putting on a charade for years to cover up his work for the Crown, but overall there's more telling than showing. MFC Isa is your typical hoyden who turns down men for rather petty reasons (this has been nagging at me: if we're good with curvy MFC's these days why pick on a male character who happens to be short?).

These characters have the bones to be more than what happens on-page. I was hoping for intriguing sparks between the MC's, but the relationship is very insta-lusty. MMC Ever starts thinking of Isa in his bed with a wedding band before he even really knows her. The sex scenes are steamy fun, as always, but I wanted details to be filled in that weren't and a plot that was completely resolved. I'm sure the loose ends were intentional but it did affect my enjoyment.

This author is one of my faves, and maybe I'm just cranky from reading too many novellas, but I really want to my next read from her to be a full-length book.

This is an honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy, and I appreciate the author for the opportunity.

Oh Tracy Sumner….how do you do it?!? You are a genius at taking typical tropes and turning them into a story that seems fresh, new, and exciting all over again!

This story has a bit of a hellion FMC and an honorable man that masquerades as an absolute fop. Somehow this trope isn’t just another story turned out with familiar lines and trajectories, it takes you on a beautiful journey filled with passion, possibilities, and hope. I really appreciated how there was no third act breakup. And I love how they continued to fight for one another instead of continually denying the truth.

Isabella is likable and endearing, despite her propensity for doing her own thing. Ever (I loved his name) is a man who is responsible and kind despite his necessary mask of frivolity. He longs for something wholesome and good. When he realizes it’s with Isabella, he doesn’t turn back. I also loved how Isabella’s family embraced Ever and helped them along as a couple instead of being scandalized by them.

The only qualm I have is that the very first chapter seems a bit confusing in the setup of the story. It was just a bit all over the place with information and facts, but this did not last the entire story.

I know it’s unrealistic, but I would really love to read a new Tracy Sumner book each month! I will take all that I can get!

I enjoyed this fake courtship story between Ever and Isabella. She wanted freedom from an unwanted suitor and possibly marriage altogether, and he wanted her to keep his secret that he wasn't the wastrel he pretended to be as a cover for his spy work for the Crown. He was attracted to her but believed himself too old. She didn't think the age gap was important because she finally found someone that she trusted and that accepted her for who she was. This novella was about finding love and learning to trust the person that finally makes you feel seen. There was witty banter, unintended adventures, an instant connection that they tried to deny, a slow burn romance that led to steamy scenes on and off page. Even the obstacles they faced were done with an understanding that they could work it out and overcome them. I liked that there want this insurmountable thing keeping them apart unnecessarily. I love it when the couple doesn't continue to fight their feelings forever. I really liked this main couple and was happy for their HEA. There were couples from a previous book that offered a nice connection, but it wasn't necessary to read it for this book.

This is a 3 1/2 star read for me but rounded up to 4 stars because I love the author so much. In season II of the Rake Review, Tracy Sumner has her installment in April this time around. I have read almost all of Tracy Sumner’s books. I feel like the minority in reviews for this book but this one wasn’t my cup of tea. If you have never read, Tracy Sumner I would still recommend this one. It still has her steam and banter. It’s still a good time and well-written. I just felt like it was too short. I wanted more story from Ever and Isa. I wanted a little more depth behind the trope of fake courting. He is a spy pretending to be a rake and she is a woman that doesn’t want the ordinary life. There are mentions of Weston and Penny from Season 1 of the Rake Review Tall, Dark and December and also the Duke of a Mercer from Chasing the Duke makes an appearance. You do not need to read either of those before this book but it was a nice addition. The Rake Reviews are a series of books with a new author every month. This is the second installment. These are great way to pick up multiple authors writing steamy Regency Romance. I received this e-ARC early from the author. All my opinions are my own and given freely.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is Ever (Percival Everard Trentham, Earl of Merevale) and Isa’s (Isabella Anstruther-Colbrook) story. Isa is bored and unhappy with the life expected of a woman of her standing, and isn’t entirely sure what she can do about it. She rebels against society but doesn’t want to embarrass her family; she believes she is discreet enough that most of her antics go unnoticed. Ever plays at being a drunken rake, but it is only a cover for the covert work that he is looking to retire from. He is intrigued by Isa, but doesn’t think that he is a good option for her; whereas, Isa has different plans after she gets to know him a little better and easily sees behind his facade. I enjoy the play between these two as they get to know one another better but I really wanted a little more information/story about the knob that tries to blackmail Isa (I wanted closure/revenge) and the person/situation threatening their future while Ever is at his estate (what was happening that required him to rush back and resolve in London?).

Slow burn spice & fun banter

After Ever, the Earl of Merevale finds himself April’s Rake by the Brazen Belle’s Rake Review, he sees Isa at one of his parties where she shouldn’t be. She tells him that she’s just trying to find her purpose in life and needs something to give her a spark. There’s immediate attraction between them that they both initially try to ignore. Isa eventually learns Ever has several secrets (think the Scarlet Pimpernel), but so does she. She proposes a solution to Ever and he can’t tell her no. It’s fun to see Ever how deals with Isa’s brothers-in-law Weston "West" Whitaker from Tall, Dark & December (another Rake Review book) and the Duke of Mercer from Chasing the Duke, since they are his future business partners.

You’ll find slow burn spice along his fun banter between Ever and Isa. I recommend this book even if you haven’t read the other two stories mentioned above, this story stands on its own.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

LOVED it!

Isabella wants nothing to do with marriage, especially the men trying to win her over. Ever has the reputation of an airhead party boy when really, he’s a top spy for the Crown with serious missions. A fake courtship is just what they need to keep her suitors at bay and make him seem more serious. Only the feelings are anything but fake…

I loved the passion and connection between them, how they see past each other’s facades and think about more, how these seemingly opposite people worm their way into each other’s hearts. He thinks he’s too old for her; she hopes he’ll see past it. They let each other in, let each other hope they’ve found their confidante. I loved the slow-ish burn and the fire that comes out. The writing is beautiful and intricate, and the ending and epilogue left me smiling and happy.

Much Ado About April is perfect for someone who loves fake relationships, slow burns, age gaps, opposites attract, and historical romances packed into a long novella/short novel.

Lady Isabella is a beautiful young scandal waiting to happen and
Everard Trentham, Earl of Merevale is a seasoned player who means to stop being underestimated. He is done being seen as an indulgent and unserious gentleman. He is pretending to be this to cover his undercover intelligence work. At the age of thirty eight he is ready to retire and assume a more normal life. But as fate would have it, Isabella Anstruther-Colbrook upends his carefully ordered plans. She is bold, vibrant and reckless and has no intention of following the marriage mart. From their first meeting, she sees his carefully staged persona and proposes a way to achieve what they both want. It involves a false courtship. This way Isa gains freedom from the wedding games and Ever gains a shield for his private government work and affairs. What begins as a clever ruse becomes so much more. Soon they fall into something that won’t be denied and find what they never thought they would, a HEA together!

A Rake is a Rake…or is he? Hiding behind a curated persona, Ever is doing his best to get through the next 6 weeks so he can go home to his manor and finally live. Unfortunately , Miss Mischief keeps getting in his way. Isa is so bored with life, she is up for any scandal, including a masquerade Ever has put on, a place she should not be. I adored their banter and his lack of ability to keep up with a woman 20 years his junior. It was a good story, but would have loved to have seen the scene where he gives Isa’s blackmailer the set down he deserved. No real “action” in this story, except for one,a rather spicy love scenes and a chemistry between them everyone can see but them. The 4 stars are for the use of the f-bomb-no need for it and it ruins the story for me.

New month, new rake this time Ever, Earl of Trentham is picked. He really doesn’t deserve the title of April’s Rake since it’s all an illusion for his undercover work for the Crown. No matter how many years this has been his career somehow Isabella Anstruther-Colbrook sees the real man behind his drunken act. Bored and intrigued Isa is determined to find out why.
Ever is trying to avoid the hellion, first she is too young and secondly she is his business partners sister. Easier say than done, he is starting to fall her alluring charms.
Great characters and fun banter between them, yes there are some spicy 🌶️ scenes. Nice to have some of the previous characters involved with Ever and Isa story. I do like that it isn’t necessary to read the other months or in order. Thank you to the author for this ARC. All opinions expressed are truly my own.

I've been wavering between 3 and 4 stars, but settled on 4 because the book is, as usual, well written with engaging characters and entertaining banter. However, although Much Ado About April is an enjoyable read, I don't think it is one of Tracey Sumner's best. I felt it concentrated too much on the steamy scenes at the expense of the background story, which I would have liked to have been covered in more depth as it had great potential, but rather annoyingly skipped over detail I really, really wanted to know about. So, a little disappointing compared to her usual very high standard, but still worth a read.

Ever is the bachelor hailed in the April Brazen Belle but much of his reputation is manufactured as a cover for his work for the crown. He wants peace and a life with a family at his country estate.
Isabella is named Madam Mischief. She is young, strong minded, and entranced by the incongruities of Ever.
He also thinks she is amazing while he is trying to protect her and save her reputation.
He worries about the fourteen year age difference but she has been adept at managing him thus far.
Some danger and circumstances add to their dilemma of being together.
Fun family characters from previous stories add to the enjoyment.
Sizzling chemistry, sensual scenes, and witty dialogue makes it a joy to read.
I received an ARC but the honest opinion is my own.

Mutual Protection?
Everard Trentham, Earl of Merevale, agrees (or is it the other way around) to help Isabella Anstruther-Colbrook when she literally storms into his life and nothing will ever be same same for either of them after that!
I loved the way this beautiful love story began and how their interest in each other quickly grew into something very exciting and worthwhile.
Even more, I quickly grew to enjoy their antics as they sprang into my heart with every intention of staying there.
Yes, this is a story which has to be read if only for its wonderful entertainment value and your enjoyment.
I have just finished reading an early copy of this book and am very happy to recommend it.

A girl who knows what she wants meets a man who is afraid to want anything. Isabella is the spirited daughter of a duke whose side gig is embroidering racy unmentionables for courtesans. She doesn’t want to be stuck as just a wife, she wants more from life. She meets Everard, an earl who has cultivated a reputation as a dissipated rake as a cover for his work for the crown. She likes what she sees, but Ever tales some convincing to believe that he can have a happy life post-spy career. Isa is up to the task of convincing him, though. Wonderful characters and story, with cameos from Tracy’s book from last season and more. Highly recommend!

This is a tangled cast of characters from two of Sumner's previous books brought together for a fun, steamy, heartwarming happily ever after. (Chasing The Duke and Tall, Dark And December) I could have read this in one sitting if it hadn't been for my pesky job.

Everard (Ever) Trentham, Earl of Merevale wants everyone to think he is a drunkard and a rake. He goes out of his way to encourage wicked tales about himself. It allows him to blend in, be seen when he needs to be, hidden when required. Isabell Anstruther-Colbrook is unhappy, ready to be on-the-shelf and isn't afraid of a little scandal to get there. She thought she found love once, but it was a lie. These two are drawn to each other, see the flaws and fall in love anyway.

A few revelations, a shocking admission and mutual attraction, this book takes you on a journey for both main characters. Tropes include age gap, enemies to lovers, and grumpy/sunshine. I laughed, felt my heart hurt and cried real tears. Sumner has an amazing way of weaving such heartfelt stories that make you want to go back and re-read all of her books, again.

Another thoroughly enjoyable story, beautifully built, with wonderfully drawn characters from Tracy Sumner.

This is a part of a series “The Rake Review” a sort of Lady Whistledown calling out all the bad boys. These books are all written by different authors and I will be searching them out.

Tracy Sumner is one of my favourite historical romance, with a side of spice, authors and I definitely recommend her books to anyone who enjoys that genre as I do.

Isa and Evers story phew ! A sizzling romantic story that will set alight the passion of a free spirited young maiden and an aging spy .

This story is part of the rake series and is Tracy’s April addition , as always it has a rake for each month .

This month is a scorcher and as always Tracy captures it beautifully and it’s a belter of a story .

I’m an ardent fan of Tracy’s historical romances as she captures the era and the sizzling passions so well .

Grab a copy and enjoy you will love it

Hot, humorous & utterly addictive!!

I thoroughly enjoyed Much Ado About April!! Ever & Isa are the perfectly 'imperfect' couple - and when she set her mind to having him - there was no stopping her!! I absolutely adore a strong willed heroine & this absolutely hit the spot for me!

It was so lovely to revisit Penny & West from Tall, Dark and December too! Chasing the Duke is next up on my list and I am so excited to read more about the Duke of Mercer!

Huge thank you to Tracy for having me as part of your ARC team - All opinions are my own :)

I loved how Ever is putting on a show as the worst possible Rake while doing his job for the crown. Isabella is a lady who is want to get into scandals. In regency England is means doing anything woman aren't "allowed" to do. She doesn't necessarily want a man, but she's more than willing to pretend to get what she does want, her freedom. Ever doesn't want to put anyone in danger and pushes her away. Thankfully neither can quit each other and they find their way back to each other and a perfectly lovely HEA.

I loved everything about this book!! It was fun, delightful and full of steam!! Isabella and Everard were very likable characters and were well developed. I loved the interaction between them and thought they were truly perfect together. I enjoyed reading how Ever tried to convince Isa that he was too old and wrong for her while she continued to ignore every one for his reasons. I liked how the fake relationship turned out to be so much more than either one of them expected. It was absolutely fabulous!! I highly recommend this book!!

An absolute delight to read. This story had everything I love in a romance - tormented and grumpy hero, spirited and bright heroine, slow burn, desire and passion, attraction and unexpected love, gorgeous banter and age gap. Ever and Isa are perfection and this story flowed seamlessly as the words on the page and their love once barriers came crumbling down. A false courtship that tempts them to a wonderful happily ever after.

A secret about to be discovered in this fast-paced thrilling read with lots of sizzle and entertaining moments.

A beautiful novella that kept me reading well past my bedtime.
The age gap between Isa and Ever didn’t bother me at all — they were clearly smitten from the moment they met.
I loved watching them go after what they wanted and fully embrace their passion.
Their chemistry made this such an engaging read.

Ever and Isa both play dangerous games that could ruin them both, fortunately their fake relationship leads to them joining forces, finding out about their true selves and realizing they have met their soulmate, so moving on to a brighter future together, caring less about the ton´s scrutiny becomes so much easier.

Sizzling hot romance between the beautiful brazen Isabella and the Earl of Merevalle “Ever.” Despite the 14 year age difference and the Earl’s wastrel reputation, they find they have more in common than expected. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I loved the fast paced action and Isa’s ability to see right through Ever’s subterfuge.
