A terrific review of Bruce Rogers book design and typography work from his earliest work in the late 1800’s to 1925. Of course, this is only part of Mr. Rogers’ work, as he was active until the 1950’s. As a snapshot in time, however, this is a great overview of the work of one of the twentieth century’s greatest book designers and typographers; particularly with Frederic Warde’s perceptive and erudite introductory essay. Also included is a bibliography from Mr. Rogers earliest work up to and including 1925 (the publication date of this book). As an aside, Frederic Warde must also be included as a fine book designer and typographer in his own right, although he died in 1939 at the young age of 45. This volume also contains illustrations of some of the works mentioned in the essay and bibliography. While this particular book is a rather limited edition of 210 copies, all signed by Mr. Rogers, the volume has been reprinted as a second and updated edition in 1926 and later as trade edition reprints. If the subject is of interest, then you should read this book— Mr. Warde’s essay is worth the price of admission by itself, with the bibliography as a great bonus.
