Women with Grit combines eight different short biographies of determined women, pioneers of their respective fields, into one book that could be easily read or enjoyed by students in grades 4-6. What I enjoyed most about this book is that the women featured weren't all known for their work in STEM fields. While there was an astronomer and a doctor, there was also a photographer and singer, showing that even accomplishments in fields typically underrated can even be noteworthy. Women with Grit would be especially wonderful to show to young female students so that they can see that no matter what they want to do in life, they can be successful and that their aspirations are valid. This book would also be great to have students read for a unit on women in history and their accomplishments, perhaps even designing one-a-day lessons about each different woman featured in the book that would allow students to conduct more research and further explore and discuss these women's accomplishments. Overall, the stories can show students that with persistence and determination, you can do what others may think impossible.

The book I will tell you about is called Women with Grit by Bonnie Highsmith Taylor. The Women with the Grit means women willing to stand up for themselves. Some of these womens are Maria Mitchell, Susan B. Anthony, and Harriet Tubman. All of the brave women overcame obstacles to achieve their goals. Maria Mitchell wanted to be the first American astronomer, and she faced a lot of problems that she solved alone. In the end she achieved her wish, and goal which was to become a astronomer. A lot of the women with the grit achieved medals, and met famous people like Florence Nighntingale.
One thing I will tell you before my essay is that the Women with Grit is not just any famous people!
They are people who worked hard as any other person. However, they believed in themselves that they could get their wish.

I thought that this was a really great non-fiction book. That's because it told me about the indivisual life time of different people willing to stand up for themselves. One of the life style I was intrested in was Linda Richards. One reason her life style was intresting is because she met Florence Nighntingale a famous nurse. During the time Linda, and Florence were together they became good friends which intrested me. That's because in all the books I have read about Florence Nighntingale not one mentioned about Florence being with Linda. Another reason Linda's life style intrested me is because she went to Japan, and helped teach a nursing program in Kyoto. This reason intrested me the most because I am Japanese, and I learned English in 2 years while Linda learned Japanese in 5 years. She also helped many nurse students have their patients trust them by saying a male doctor ordered the nurse to give him the medicine because most men only followed the orders of other men. That's because it was still believed that women weren't as strong as men.

Some of the important facts I've learned are that Bethenia didn't care if a doctor shouted at her just because she helped him stop a little girl from shouting by doing his job of putting a catheter inside. This matters because it tells us that Bethenia had faith in herself that she could be a doctor even if other male doctors thought that was impossible, and disgracefull. Also, it teaches us that it could be begginig where other women would start trying to be a doctor. Another important fact is that Jackie Cochran was friends with Amelia Earhart a famous pilot. This fact kind of matters because they were both going to turn out famous, and they would be mostly proud of not only themselves. They will be proud of each other. It also matters because it tells us that most friends be famous. for example, Linda was friend with Florence Nigntingale, and they both turned out to be very famous like Amelia Earhart, and Jackie Cochran.

After you read my essay I hope that you are covinced that this is a great book. If you want to learn about many other women who became famous you should read this book. I could tell you that this wasn't my favorite book. However, it was a nice reliable nonfiction book to learn about most famous women. Or should we say Women with Grit!?

Great story for elementary kids about women who have made an impact on history. The chapters are short with illustrations to help give a visual and keep the children focused. There is obviously much more to each woman's struggle, but the writer did a good job getting a decent amount of info in such a short book.
