“Your life was promised to me, Princess. If anyone is going to kill you, it has to be me.”

I, Devan Todd, am the one marked by fate to chase away the lingering shadows of this world’s oldest enemy for good. But, I can’t do that if I’m dead.

Enter Terran Weaver, the man who lied his way into becoming my assigned bodyguard. Everyone else seems to trust him, but my magic senses every twisted-half truth that slips from his mouth. Those above me think I’m too suspicious, so I’m forced to keep my enemy close.

Violence gleams in his eyes and the lies stack higher and higher. He says no one will hurt me because my life is his, and I don’t know if that’s an oath, a threat, or both.

It doesn’t matter if his touch calls my magic to the surface of my skin or if he’s the only one who can challenge me. The fate of the world depends on me and not what I desire. As the sky darkens with ill omens, I must put my heart aside and answer the call of my destiny.

Marked by Fate is an Epic Fantasy Romance with a reluctant chosen one, enemies-to-lovers, and an otherworldly threat lingering in the shadows. This is an interconnected standalone and ends in an HEA.

Marked by Fate by Autumn Hawthorne [ARC REVIEW]
★★★★★
5/5 stars
Release date: February 5th, 2026

Destiny can be a curse, a weapon, or a mirror.

IF YOU LIKE:
• Blended sci-fi and fantasy
• Extreme generational trauma
• Enemies to lovers
• Chosen Ones on opposing sides
• Banter, attraction, and denial
• Passionate spice
YOU’LL LOVE Marked by Fate

≪ Magic hummed through everything, yet I still struggled with faith. Not faith in the Sallesah, but faith in myself to be the Chosen One my people needed me to be. ≫

HIGHLIGHTS:
• Thiena
→ I could talk about this world forever. Hawthorne blends sci-fi and fantasy with a deft, precise hand. Magic and technology go hand-in-hand, the history is soaked in blood and hope, the politics are complex and detailed (and painfully relevant), and it’s all expressed at a perfect pace. The Gods are real, benevolent, and heavily involved in the lives of their people. The alien enemy waiting to Harvest humanity is absolutely terrifying. Every nuance and minute detail brings this brilliant, beautiful world to life, and it is utterly breathtaking.
• Terran
→ What can I say about Terran Weaver? His narration is a masterclass in villain POVs—dark, vicious, utterly convinced of his righteousness, and truly delicious to read. His voice is engaging and magnetic; sharp as an obsidian blade and just as dangerous. His charisma is matched only by his ruthlessness, but his self-awareness eclipses both. He doesn’t redeem himself so much as unfold himself from the twisted shape he was raised to take, and watching him deprogram and become HIMSELF is an absolutely beautiful experience.
• The mirroring
→ Devan and Terran are the same person, trapped on opposing sides of the glass. Both are buried under expectation, both carry the weight of extreme generational trauma, both are defined by destinies they did not choose but feel they have no choice to uphold. While Devan shies away from her Fate, knowing it WILL come to pass whether they’re ready or not, Terran fully embraces his path only to find it leads to a darkness he isn’t ready to accept. The gravitational pull between them is both personal and cosmic, drawing them together again and again until they’re ready to either save the world or end it. Their chemistry is based on mutual, devastating understanding of one another.
• The war
→ The threat posed by the Estedians is hinted at through the first book in this duology, but in Marked by Fate we come face to face with their true, unflinching evil–and it is horrifying. Not only are they a terrifying alien race that prove themselves to be physically dominant, but their overarching plan is brutal and brilliantly planned. The war against the invaders begins long before their ships arrive in the sky, and the way they weaponize indoctrination, sacrifice, and devotion is absolutely horrific—and incredibly interesting. This book does not shy away from loss and pain, and it makes the stakes abominably high.

≪ I didn’t want Devan to die, but if she had to die, then it would be by my hand and no one else’s. ≫

WISHLIST:
• More, someday
→ Hawthorne currently doesn’t have plans to return to Thiena, but if ever she does, I’ll be there. The only thing I want from this book is more of it.

≪ “I’ll do anything to be worthy of you. If I don’t earn your trust in this life, then I will in the next. The one after, and the one beyond that. I won’t stop searching for redemption until I’m worthy of you.” ≫

Marked by Fate is a sprawling, genre defying story that manages to feel both like an intimate character study and a massive space opera adjacent fantasy. If you are tired of the same old tropes, Autumn Hawthorne has crafted something truly distinct here.

The most impressive feat of this novel is how it marries traditional high fantasy with a terrifying, advanced alien threat. It’s not just about swords and spells; it’s about a world where the gods are tangibly present while extraterrestrial invaders threaten to harvest.

I was deeply impressed by the inclusivity woven into the narrative.

The Protagonist: Devan is a refreshing lead; she is a powerful, curvy woman who feels the immense weight of her "Chosen One" status. Her magic, which acts as a literal lie detector, creates a fascinating psychological barrier between her and everyone else.

The Bodyguard: Terran is a complex, multi-layered "villain." The subversion of his character was a brilliant departure from the typical "alphahole" hero we often see in this genre.

The tension between Devan and Terran is electric. It isn't just a simple "I hate you" romance; it’s a collision of two people trapped by the expectations of their respective bloodlines.

A bold, inclusive, and emotionally raw fantasy romance.

I was an ARC reader for Marked by Fate by Autumn Hawthorne.

The world building in the book was amazing although it was heartbreaking in some parts for both Devan and Terran. I felt sorry for both of the characters for the challenges and tragedies that they went through.

Devan was such a caring person they felt a lot about their friends and family. Even though she never fully trusted Terran she still felt like she couldn’t be without him. It was nice to see their relationship develop throughout the story from enemies to lovers.

Arc review on Marked By Fate by Autumn Hawthorne out 2/5/26. I loved it. Autumn's stories are always unique. Her fmcs or at least one of the main characters are always curvy and all her books have someone from the LGBTQ community. This is my first novel with non binary characters. I have a lot of first with Autumn's books and I love that. This story is an interconnected stand alone. You can read her parent story Woven By Fate or just read this on its own. She's in her 20's and going to school to work on her magic. Set at the school, she does some training on her magic but too many attacks happen where she and her squad are fighting for survival that it doesn't feel like its really at a school. So if thats not your vibe you dont need to worry. She meets the mmc and it really is true enemies to lovers. There were some harsh scenes that even surprised me and I loved it. It was also my first novel not counting Outlander where the mmc is a v word. That was refreshing to me.

Beautiful. Magnificent. I finished this book and just sat there for a solid five minutes feeling warm and content. Don’t get me wrong, this is a wild ride, for sure. But it was amazing!

Devan is such an amazing character. I’m in awe of them. They didn’t ask for their role, and they don’t really want it, but, oh boy, do they step up despite everything that’s happened. Terran really is a terror, but we love him. He’s not had a choice in his role, either, but I’m so happy for how he turned out and handled things.

I definitely spent the majority of the book alternating between yelling at Terran in my mind and wondering how on Thiena this would turn out. It’s a serious slow burn, but it’s fantastic. (Also necessary because *someone* was slow on getting with the program)

I hope this isn’t the last we see of these characters, but if it is, what a beautiful way to end the story.

Hands down 5/5 stars and 2/5 spice.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy, and this is my honest review.

Stars: 4

Marked by Fate is a follow-up novel about a world torn apart by civil war, which is brought back together through the love of a soul mate bond, and the heir that bond. Our heir is strong and blessed by her deity to wield impressive power, but her path to leading her people to peace is anything but easy. She encounters those who would oppose her, seeking to destroy their world, and scariest of all, falling for her enemy.

Although this novel is a follow up to Autumn Hawthorne’s, Woven by Fate, it is a fantastic story that can stand on its own. I did not read Woven by Fate prior to reading Marked by Fate, and I did not feel as though I was lost or missing key pieces to the story. The world of Thiena is unlike any I have ever visited before. The world is full of magic, deities, and even mixed in a little sci-fi for added spice. The author has started to build a beautiful world that I would like to learn more about.
Pacing was excellent. I thought in the first couple of chapters pacing seemed a little slow, as we were introduced to a large ensemble of characters and introduced to the school grounds. I was worried that this would be a common theme throughout the book but was pleasantly surprised that once conflict started to arise the story flew. It was a real page turner that I found myself staying up way too late on work nights because I just had to know what happened next.

Character development was well addressed. I was ecstatic when I learned that our FMC was strong AND our girl had curves! She had a realistic female body and the MMC loved that about her. Let us talk about our MMC, he is a red head! Love this, we need more ginger representation. The slow burn of their love story was next level. This is not my first time reading an enemies to lovers, I knew within the first chapter who would hook up with who, but I was literally screaming, “just give in to the feelings already!” When they finally do, all I am going to say is, fireworks. The payoff is worth the hair pulling wait.

Would I read this book again? Yes! Do I want a follow up? Also, yes! Give me some more time with Terror <3

PS I love that nickname.

Okay y'all. I finished my ARC of Marked by Fate the other day (THANK YOU) and I just...
screaming, crying, throwing myself into the void while also giggling madly.

Are you tired of me saying AUTUMN HAWTHORNE NEVER MISSES??? I DON"T CARE because it's the truth, and I will not stop. Every single story, I am blown away by how vividly this author brings their worlds and characters to life inside my brain.

This is the second book in Chosen of the Underground, which is an interconnected standalone duology. This is an Epic Dystopian Fantasy Romance that has a reluctant Chosen One who knows exactly what is at stake and what should happen if they fail along with an otherworldly threat finally revealing themselves. WHILE YES, you could read it on its own, I am begging you, pleading even, to start with Woven by Fate. Trust me on this. It will make the experience that much more impactful.

This is a real slow burn with actual enemies to lovers. you know that my bread and butter. basically my entire personality and so often I find stories that are marketed this way and just are not so this was EXACTLY what I needed. The stakes stay high always in this universe but this story had my heart in my throat for most of the book. I laughed, I cried, I raged, I spiraled as I stared at my wall, I kicked my feet lmfao. This was a full emotional decathlon.

I'm always a little nervous with continuations because you never know if they will live up to the first book, but this is not a concern here. This is everything I wanted and more for the Chosen of the Underground.

My heart is in shambles (affectionately and also with pain lmao) you must add this to your TBR.
Marked by Fate comes out February 5th on Kindle Unlimited and Paperback.

As always, endless thanks to Autumn for creating something so hauntingly beautiful and for the opportunity for this ARC. I cannot wait to put this on my shelf.

Never. Stop. Writing.

I cannot properly explain how excited I was for this book. Woven by Fate completely stole my heart, and when I was told it was a standalone, I was devastated. So when Autumn announced another standalone set in the same world, following the children of the characters I already loved? Immediate joy. Immediate anticipation. Immediate emotional investment.

I will be honest though, I loved Woven by Fate more. And I hate that I can’t fully articulate why. Something about the way this book started and the way my brain processes stories just did not click at first. I can’t pinpoint it, which is deeply annoying, but that disconnect is the reason this is a four-star read for me instead of five.

That said… once I hit around chapter six, I was fully in. Hooked. Invested. Emotionally compromised.

There isn’t a lot of world building here, but that makes sense since so much of it was established in the first book. Instead, the focus is on the characters, and this is where Autumn Hawthorne absolutely shines. They have this rare ability to write characters who feel real. Their struggles, their doubts, their emotional battles mirrored things I deal with in my own life, and that kind of connection is why I will read anything this author writes without hesitation.

In this book we follow Devan, child of Xavier and Celeste, as they come to terms with their fate and what it means to be bound to a man who has sworn to kill them. The tension, the emotional weight, and the internal conflict are all beautifully done.

Even with my rocky start, I am so glad I returned to this world. These characters, this universe, and this author’s voice are something special. And yes… I will absolutely be reading whatever they give us next.

🚨Spoilers ahead🚨

I loved and related to this book on so many levels. Terran and his finding out the truth after living a life in a cult, Devan not wanting to step into their role.

My heart ached as the story unfolded. I felt each loss and heartbreak. I also felt the pure love that each character had for each other.

The burn was super slow and they are truly enemies but it was worth every page turn!

A few of my fav quotes!

“It didn’t matter that she was somehow soft and solid, or that she was so beautiful it was devastating to look at her.”
——Terran describing Devan - I can’t think of a more beautiful body, soft and strong!

“ My face hit the dirt with a wave of intense vertigo overwhelming my senses. Before the darkness took me, my last thoughts circled Devan. I’m sorry.”
——Terran’s thoughts as he was passing out. To be the last thought someone has…swoon

“It is easy to blame a group of people; it is harder to address the problems that fed into the hate,”
—-Overseer Nolan. Kind of like the US and blaming black and brown people instead of looking at our original hate and sin with this country! Can’t move forward until you acknowledge it.

Thanks Autumn for the Advanced Read!

A few notes about me as a reader:

😎 I read for the vibes. If the atmosphere is right, I’m all in.
😿 If I cry at the end because I’m sad it’s over, it’s an automatic five stars.
⭐️ I review books with an open heart, not a red pen. Plot holes, lighter character development, and other common critiques aren’t at the top of my list. What matters most is this: Did I love it? Did it take me somewhere else?

I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

Marked by Fate is a Sci-Fi/ Fantasy romance.
Similar to its predecessor, the language feels SERIOUS. An epic sci-fi feel. Unfortunately I think that style of writing is just not for me.
I enjoyed the story/ plot more for this second book. It felt like there were more turns and tension. (Though I enjoyed Celeste and Xavier more in the first book as characters- I loved knowing Devan’s story and the parallels- “little shadow” is also a darling nickname).

I enjoyed that our main character is non-binary. I’m a cis-female, so potentially this isn’t my lane, but the intros felt clunky in the beginning when pronouns are being established- I understood and was great with just using she/ they pronouns. (Again, solid chance I’m out of my lane here).

There’s not a lot of spice- I also enjoyed the spice in the first book better, this is a little.. grittier? Both were graphic in their own ways but written very differently.

Overall if a 3rd book in this universe were to come out I’m on the edge on if I’d read it, BUT I enjoyed the plot and characters enough that I’m interested in reading other things by this author, though I probably wouldn’t re-read this book.

Autumn Hawthorne has done it again. I loved book 1 in this series, and I am in love with now book 2.

Following Devan Todd and Terran Weaver, we get an amazing story built with tension, amazing tropes, and some of the best damn world-building ever. While this story is an interconnected standalone, the vibes from book one carry over well if you have read it first!

I am a sucker for Autumn's world-building. But so far, this world is my favorite. Between the beautiful and creative scenery and such a unique magic system, I can get lost in this world.

There are a million things I want to say about this story, but I don't want to spoil all the magic. The tension is great in this story, as well as the spice. I will say the character building also feels so intentional. These characters not only build a relationship, but they also grow so much in this story. I really want to touch on Devan's character development. They had such wonderful growth not only in power but as a person. I feel as if Devan is one of my all-time favorite characters.

Thank you, Autumn, for the chance to ARC read this story. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for what comes next!

I had the absolute pleasure of not only ARC reading, but also beta reading Marked by Fate and I’m so excited with how this book turned out. It is an enthralling read that captures the essence of epic fantasy romance! Devan’s journey as the reluctant chosen one is both gripping and immersive. The tension between her and the enigmatic Terran creates a deliciously charged dynamic that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Autumn masterfully wove together themes of trust, destiny, and the struggle against dark forces, all while exploring the complicated emotions that arise when enemies become allies. The world building is rich, painting a vivid backdrop for Devan’s quest, and the romance is both intense and satisfying, culminating in a well earned happy ending.

This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy and romance alike. It’s definitely a five star experience that leaves you craving more!

A huge thank you to Autumn for providing me with a copy of Marked by Fate. As always, my opinions are my own!

Did I sign up to ARC read this completely blind? Yup.....
Do I regret that? NOT ONE SINGLE BIT!

After seeing a tiktok where the author pitched her book as having non-binary rep, i figured I would check it out. Ok the cover art also was super pretty so that helped.

Getting into the book It had all of my favorite tropes. Enemies to lovers, yes please. Reluctant "chosen one" who just happened to also be curvy and amazing.... I need this in my every day life. And finally a slow burn, anyone who knows me know I live for the yearn, for the will they or wont they. Reading this was literally a check list of my favorite things.

One thing that I really want to highlight is I feel the author took great care not only in her character development but int he world building around them. The atmosphere was rich and immersive, and at times I was just in awe.

My only complaint is I don't know where to put this one on my shelves when I grab my shelf copy, fantasy, romance, sci-fi? Bc it can fit in all of those. Maybe I will just need to start a shelf for the author alone.

Autumn Hawthorne has done it again for me! I absolutely loved the first book in this series and was super excited about getting to read book two. Marked by Fate has so many of my favorite tropes and great representation of a nonbinary MC.

Some of the tropes you will find in this book include:
🔥Slow Burn
🔥Enemies to Lovers
🔥Forbidden Love
🔥Reluctant Chosen One

Devan is the nonbinary main character (she/they), the inheritor of the title Protector of the Underground, and Terran is the Son of the Dominion. The Dominion has been trying to dethrone Devan's father and seize control of The Underground. Terran has been raised to unalive Devan and their family to achieve this goal.

Terran manages to get a position as Devan's bodyguard and begins to unravel truths he was not expecting to discover. The plot in this book had me on the edge of my seat and unable to put the book down. This is a slow burn with not a lot of spice, but the spicy scenes were 🔥🔥🔥.

I haven't read the first book in this series, it is an interconnected standalone. But I most definitely will!

I couldn't put it down!!! But I didn't want it to end!

If you like banter, forbidden love, fated mates and "only I can k1ll them" set in an dystopian fantasy this is for you!

Devan is a kinda stuck in their head a bit, but it's no wonder, to have on their shoulders the fate of the world probably does that to anyone.

Terran I wanted to yell and kick and hit, but we love him anyway! He didn't have a say in his role!

It really is amazing and I feel my words isn't enough to really get it out there, but I really hope you give it a chance!
It's so worth it!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC og this book, but the review above is 100% my one thoughts and feelings.

Marked by Fate is a bold, genre-defying epic that fuses intimate character depth with the sweeping scale of a space-opera-tinged fantasy, shattering tired tropes in favor of something truly original. Autumn Hawthorne crafts a world where gods walk openly among mortals, magic and destiny intertwine, and a terrifying advanced alien threat looms, intent on harvesting everything in its path. At the center stands Devan a powerful, curvy, deeply human Chosen One burdened by a lie-detecting magic that isolates her from everyone she’s meant to protect while Terran, her enigmatic bodyguard, subverts the expected “alphahole” archetype into a layered, morally complex force of tension. Their connection crackles with intensity, not from simple hatred, but from two souls crushed beneath legacy, bloodline, and expectation. Inclusive, emotionally raw, and unapologetically ambitious, this is a fantasy romance that dares to be different and succeeds.

This is my first experience with this universe and I absolutely LOVED it!! I think reading the first book would provide more world building, but thanks to the authors addition of an in depth glossary it is not necessary.

The characters are well written and complex with real human emotions and struggles, they are very easy to relate to and love. I cried, laughed, and worried with them as though they were real people. As a huge bonus, there is a substantial amount of LGBTQ+ representation sprinkled throughout the story. Which really adds to the characters "realness".

My only complaint is the slight choppiness of the story itself. At times things drug on, but 5 pages later there were jumps in plot and behavior. The book is still very much enjoyable, but it could've flowed better. I felt like there were behind the scenes character growth that I was missing.

This is an interesting story in a world of magic and destiny. A world where one mark can change your life. Being one of the select few blessed by the Gods is hard enough but add in the journey that life takes you on and the struggle begins. Devan was born with a mark and is training hard to be what fate has decreed. When Terran enters Devan’s world their lives will be forever changed.
Devan and Terran go through so much. Enemies and secrets are abundant but both will need to find a way to the truth and decide what they believe in their hearts. Seeing their relationship take shape made for a nice read. This author has created a world where emotions and magic reign and love shines through it all.

A fabulously well crafted fantasy romance with great LGBTQIA representation.

Devan and Torren are back causing chaos. Our reluctant Chosen, their bodyguard, who may or may not be a villain, and a fast paced adventure all mix into a worthy book 2 in the series.

By turns you want to throttle Torren and give him a cuddle. Devan never quite gets to 100% trusting Torren but you can see that she desperately want to at times. Sometimes you just need one person is solidly on your side.

Slow burn goodness, actual enemies to lovers. High emotions - anger, snark, snotty cries, I pretty much did them all. The author is new to me, but I'm happily going back to read book 1 now. Yes, again I found a series part way through!

*ARC Reader-These are 100% my own honest opinions*
Can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. The beginning immediately grabs returning readers with a glimpse of Woven by Fate’s MCs and gives new readers plenty of insight and knowledge about the world and what is going on. Devan is SUCH a great character (I’m a sucker for reluctant-chosen-one tropes haha) and the way they step up despite REALLY not wanting to AND everything that has happened. Terran is a menace and I am absolutely here for it. The chemistry and tension in the slow-burn is just fantastic. I can’t wait to read book 2.

If you're tired of the same old tropes and you want something different this book is perfect for you. I never thought Fantasy mixed with sci-fi would be a great mix. But this opened my eyes to a whole new world.

This was my first book by Autumn and i cant wait to read more of her work.

I am obsessed with this book, if you want a book that is very inclusive with a curvy main character and a very good LGBTQ representation, this one needs to be on top of your tbr list.

Oh my goddess—what can I say about this book? What started as a bit of a slower world and character build for me quickly grew into a beautiful storyline with complex characters. While technically a stand alone I found this made the most sense to read after “Woven by Fate”, as the events and characters from that book are discussed and integral to this story.

The character growth in this story and the lovely relationships are really what make this a poignant read.

So I loved this book! I did read the first one before it but because it’s a standalone, you can read this one without the first one. I think my favorite part was how both MCs are kind of similar if you think about. They both are trying to live up to the standard that they have had since they were kids. Thank you, Ms Autumn for letting me be an ARC reader!!!

I was an ARC reader for this book and also the previous one Woven by Fate and though this is a standalone i would definitely say you should read that one first the story building in these books is immense and I absolutely love how the characters interact with each other Torren is such a deep broken soul you feel like hugging him but then he tries to kill Devan and you sort of hate him but not really then he protects them and you love him again, and there is so much emotion I full on ugly cried at parts of this book this is not a pretty pretty fairy tail this is dark and awful and full of hard choices and loss but the threads of hope and the support of their friends and family that run through it stop it being depressing if you are looking for a book that will wrong you out emotionally but leave you wanting to read it again this is the book for you
