A wonderful short story of how the bonds of love and friendships can overcome adversity.
The whole story is told by the wonderful Stephen who from what I can gather runs a fairground. He is a hardworking young man whom people respect. The folk he works with are more like close family than work colleagues and band together in times of hardship. They travel around the country with the fairground then at the end of the season go home to Stephen's where they relax and party the nights away.
One evening Stephen glances across the fairground and spots a young pretty girl, she stands forlorn almost as if she is lost and frightened. Stephen falls instantly in love. He turns away to concentrate on his fairground ride, when he looks back she has disappeared.
The pair does meet up eventually, Stephen discovers the young girl is called Ashleigh and has experienced many things a young girl should not have. He takes her into his care then his work colleagues and family pull her lovingly into their fold.
I cannot say more without giving away any of the story. It is so short you can read it in one sitting. Very worth reading for yourself, a beautiful story of the strong bonds of love and friendship.
This was a beautiful love story and testament to the fact that fragile and broken people can find happiness. Ashleigh is just that. Broken, abused and shattered by an older man who has power over her. He's a nasty drug and alcohol addicted evil man. She has no self esteem and has given up all hope of ever finding a better life. Enter Stephen. He sees her at a carnival and spots her cowered, waiting by the rides. Something about her haunts him and he's determined to get to know her. Her simple beauty fascinates him and he eyes her as a treasure. I loved every page of this book. It is truly a feel good, inspirational story about how life can deal you a rotten hand but serves up grace in the form of a knight in shining armor just when you least expect it. I felt like I was there, witnessing the whole story. So beautifully written. Love at first sight does exist and with the right person, life can turn around and bring you so many blessings! Thank you JC Clarke for delivering such a satisfying and heart rending story. More stories like this please:)
I had the honour of pre reading this story before it was released, and knowing how personal it is to the author (it's the story of how she and her husband met), I am not ashamed to say that I cried.
Not just the story, that's full of hope, but the way in which it is told. Told entirely from Stephen's point of view, with little to no dialogue, the reader relies on the descriptions that Clarke entices us with.
I could almost smell the oil and other fairground smells as I read, and hear the screams and laughter. The entire book, which is packaged neatly in a quick-read short story, reads like a film script. You can imagine yourself there, an innocent bystander as Stephen and Ashleigh's story unfolds.
A triumph and yet another string to Clarke's bow, one of many I know!
I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up this book. I had been given an ecopy by a friend who said "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!" Ok then....
This novella is short, sweet and intensely beautiful. It's tragic and wonderful and I ugly cried all over the place. I didn't immediately catch who the narrator was and I LOVED that. So much so that I'm not going to tell you the catch - you have to pick it up for yourself! I loved the use of a carnival/fair for a setting. It was unusual and made things more interesting. JC Clarke handles this story with grace and beauty and I just absolutely adore it.
The characters caught me from the first moment and took me along on their journey and I'm still not sure I'm over it!
This was a short a sweet novella that had very little dialogue. It was all written from Stephens point of view. This is the first time reading something written this way, I kept missing the dialogue, but JC Clarke has done an amazing job with her descriptions throughout the book. You really were drawn into the sights and smells and the whole world that she created using only his point of view and her descriptions.
This was a great wee short story and it was filled with so much emotion.
Wow. This is a truly beautiful heartfelt story. I thought I was about to start a novella. Then I see in the acknowledgment stat this is the story of how the author met her husband. What I didn't expect was all the emotions that I felt while reading this.
This story is told through Stephens point of view. He tells us how he felt the first time he saw Ashleigh.
Although this was a really quick read it was pure perfection. I totally adored their story and the goosebumps it gave me.
A quick read, yes, but packed with so much emotion you just might shed a tear. This tale will restore your faith in humanity that good people are still out there. A beautiful story about a young girl brave enough to chase a better life and the man who helped make it happen.
I never thought this story would have a strong hold on me as I read. This one definitely tugs at the heart strings. It is an emotional rollercoaster about climbing out of the darkness and finding happiness. Fragile is such a beautiful story!
This novella is narrated by a male protagonist. It reminds us that by holding out our hands to someone in need we can make a significant change to their life as Stephen does when he falls in love with Ashleigh who has suffered more than any young girl should. He sees her standing in the corner of the Fairground where he woks and knew he had to make her his. It is a hauntingly beautiful rendition portraying love in its purest form.
I read this book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also note that the author is the cover designer too which was so exquisite that it attracted me to buy it in the first place.
Looking forward to picking up more from this author.
