I read this back in 2018 and never posted the review I had in drafts!

I don't think I've ever read a crochet instruction book that packed so much bang for your buck! I checked out from my library, but am seriously considering purchasing a copy to keep!

The author opens with a little intro that introduces herself and the concept of freeform crochet. She then goes on to give the most wonderfully detailed instructions, with loads of photos, of the specialty stitches she'll be referring to throughout the book. I even learned a new technique! And I've been crocheting for YEARS! (I learned how to seamlessly change colors mid-row.)

She then breaks down freeform crochet into five different base techniques, and gives semi-patterns for multiple projects (of increasing difficulty) that use each of the techniques. I say semi-patterns because this is supposed to be freeform, right? But for those of us (like me!) who aren't comfortable going 100% freeform right away, there are moderately structured patterns that we can follow.

I was looking forward to trying the following... but looks like I didn't get around to it.

This is very cool, though I don't have time right now to try out the patterns. I want to try both the fingerless gloves (free-form only in coloration) and the circle-based shopper bag.. I like the illustrations of the various stitches and techniques.

A good introduction to some crochet stitches and techniques used in freeform, but it is rather far from freeform crochet as I know it. A little more on that side would have made this a better bridge from pattern-following to freeform design.

Some cool items in here, look again once I’m crocheting again. They also have a shawl of flowers that would be good to look at for my blanket of stars.

If you're an experienced crocheter, you can skip this book. I didn't find one project I liked enough to even flag as interesting.
