I understand this is supposed to be a simple, cheery, Christian-affirming poem, but it just makes no sense. The rhymes are forced, the plot is obvious, and the overall message is not actually taught-- or at least the intended message is not taught. To me, the message is that God is always trying to trick you so beware. In this way it is more related to the tricksters of Native American stories.

The good thing is that you can read this in a matter of minutes and forget it in the next hour.

I read this last year on December 20, 2011. I read it every year. The season would not be complete without this sweet reminder that when we serve others we are serving God. It is the perfect ending/beginning for New Year's Eve.

I remember reading a rendition of this story told in a picture book. This is a great poem to add to Advent readings, personally or as a read-aloud.
