Believing in Yourself and the Dreams Waiting Ahead

The You That’s Out There by Rebecca Louick, illustrated by Sinem Kilic Rabito, is a reassuring and emotionally rich picture book that speaks directly to children who feel unsure, anxious, or hesitant about who they are becoming. With warmth and encouragement, the story reminds young readers that self-doubt is part of growing—but it doesn’t get to define their future.

At its heart, the book gently invites children to imagine a version of themselves that feels brave, confident, and hopeful. It acknowledges worries and fears without letting them take center stage, emphasizing that dreams don’t disappear just because anxiety shows up. Instead, the narrative offers a steady message: believing in yourself is something you can learn, practice, and return to again and again.

The text works beautifully as emotional reassurance. It doesn’t rush children toward confidence, but patiently builds it—affirming that it’s okay to feel uncertain while still moving forward. This makes the book especially meaningful for children navigating big feelings, new challenges, or moments of self-doubt. It offers comfort without minimizing fear, and encouragement without pressure.

Sinem Kilic Rabito’s illustrations reinforce this sense of calm confidence. Soft colors, gentle expressions, and open, dreamlike spaces visually echo the book’s message of possibility and inner strength. Together, text and art create a supportive reading experience that feels both grounding and uplifting.

The You That’s Out There is a thoughtful choice for families, classrooms, and therapeutic settings. It opens space for conversations about anxiety, dreams, and self-trust, reminding children that even when they feel unsure, there is a strong, hopeful version of themselves waiting to grow.

This book offers quiet reassurance for children who are feeling unsure, worried, or overwhelmed. The idea that a future version of yourself is nearby, lighting the way forward, is both comforting and empowering. It encourages patience, bravery, and trust in the process of growing.
I really appreciated how calm and hopeful this story feels. It doesn’t try to fix everything or rush emotions away. Instead, it reminds young readers that small steps matter and that they already have what they need inside them. A thoughtful, uplifting read for kids navigating big feelings and everyday challenges.

This book is a beautifully written reminder that we are never alone and that every experience has meaning. It gently reassures children that they are safe, guided, and supported—by purpose and by their future selves along the way.

The lyrical text is calming and comforting, and the gorgeous illustrations add depth and warmth to the message. While it is a children’s book, it is just as meaningful for teens and adults who may need a quick reminder that they’re not alone. A timeless, reassuring read.

So reassuring and uplifting, this soothing picture book will give kids the confidence to do anything they set their mind to, even when they feel doubtful, anxious, or unconfident. The rhyme gives the story a rereadability quality, and the illustrations are so inviting and sweet. A great book for elementary school counselors, librarians, teachers, and parents to read to young kids!

“The You That’s Out There” is beautiful reminder that the person you are becoming is already ahead of you, guiding you through both the good times and the hard ones. As a counselor, I find myself reaching for this book multiple times each week, sharing it with children who need encouragement and hope. It helps them visualize a brighter future: one where their hard work pays off and their dreams come to life.

Though written as a children’s book, its message reaches far beyond a young audience. The author has a remarkable gift for speaking to readers of all ages with a simple yet powerful truth: it gets better. Even after many readings, the words still give me chills. Paired with whimsical, heartfelt illustrations, the story lingers long after the last page is turned. I look forward to seeing “The You That’s Out There” become a beloved staple for growth and transformation akin to “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
