The Purrfect Pop Star

Rate this book
What do you do when the stray cat you rescued turns into a world-famous pop star?

For plant scientist Yuna Oh, this isn’t a hypothetical. Her new feline friend is actually Min-ho, the missing member of K-pop group AXIOM, and he’s been cursed. The only thing keeping him from turning back into a cat? A kiss every three days. No pressure, right?

With the curse on a timer, Yuna is whisked into Min-ho’s luxury penthouse. What starts as a magical inconvenience becomes something more. He thinks her nerdy science-talk is adorable; she thinks he’s more than just a pretty face with perfect abs.

But as their feelings for each other grow, so does the danger. The obsessed fan who cursed him wants Min-ho for herself—and if they can't find a way to break the spell, their budding romance will face a truly cat-astrophic ending. After all, it's hard to have a happily-ever-after when your boyfriend is permanently fuzzy.

Thank you to the publisher Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing this book for review purposes via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Time for an honest confession I’m a rock, metal and nostalgic pop kinda girl and K-Pop isn’t a genre I really listen to or know much about, so in order to give this book a fair and honest review I did some research before diving in. The first 31% while Min-ho was stuck as a cat I absolutely loved, this part was so cute and funny, what he got up to as a cat and what trouble he caused Yuna was hilarious. As a cat I absolutely warmed up to him and Yuna, I found Yuna to be really endearing and I loved how passionate she was about her job and the environment. This book gave an insightful look into the working culture in Korea and a snapshot into what life is like as a K-Pop icon, I could imagine this book as K-drama as that’s how it reads and as I’m partial to K-dramas I loved this. I’ve been trying to get back into to reading slightly different things as I’ve mostly been stuck in a fantasy bubble for the last year and as I love contemporary romance this book was a really enjoyable read.

This book is utterly delightful!

As a known cat lover, I couldn’t resist the concept of a love story involving an ordinary girl and a K-Pop Idol magically transformed into a cat. I loved our main character’s interactions with the cat who seemed to smart to be a normal cat. I loved the humor in the book and seeing Korea through the eyes of these characters. I loved the charm and the whimsy. I found myself updating my friends in delight at the saga of the plant scientist and the K-Pop cat!

My biggest complaint is we could have used more feline energy in the third act of the book.

Recommended for those who love whimsical love stories and magic.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

A K-pop start turned into a cat falling in love with an eco-plant scientist? Sign me up.

This book’s premise was unlike anything I’ve ever read! Absolutely out of this world, funny and super endearing.

Yuna is so smart, who doesn’t love a smart scientist as a main character? Min-Ho is just pure chaos and charm.

This book took a turn I definitely didn’t expect and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought!

Thank you Netgalley for this sponsored book in return for an honest review!

I’m not even kidding, I must have a copy of this book ASAP. This sounds beautifully hilarious. 👀👀👀👀👀

Honestly who writes this stuff?
…and why can’t I stop watching?

I hate how disappointed I was with Arisa May’s The Purrfect Pop Star. Given how excited I was to read this book once I read the premise, I’m genuinely so upset that I feel like I can’t really recommend it. I suppose some of this might be due to how much I hyped myself up about the book, building some sort of expectation for how I thought it would be before I’d even picked it up. Put simply, I was expecting a romp; something filled with hijinks and hilarity. Much to my dismay, I don’t think I laughed even once.

Ultimately what worked with this book was solely its premise. The set up was clever, the overall plot idea was brilliant, and it had so much potential in general. I think there was also a lot of potential for the characters to be interesting as well, but unfortunately this was overshadowed by poor pacing, tell vs. show writing, and an overabundance of pointless moments that bogged the whole story down.

What did not work was the fact that nearly every single character aside from the main character of Yuna, was very much a caricature. Their existence was either to fill a specific role ideal or to not-so-subtly move the plot along I swear, every time Eun-bin was on the page, I wanted to cringe—the number of times she just happened to push the main character to some decision was painful. And I’m sorry, but if your plot only moves because one of your characters deus-ex-machina suggests the action that must be taken in order for [insert thing] to happen, there’s something wrong with your plot.

Nevermind that many of these instances were ones in which there was a perfectly reasonable option for how to move the plot along without a character forcing it through unnaturally.

The pacing of the story was stunted, existing in a book with an overabundance of useless moments that basically felt like unnecessary padding. Much of this seemed to be centered around building Yuna’s personality—specifically around her job and her research—something to give her a quirk that her love interest could find deeply cute about her. The fact that this was so unnecessary, took up far too much of the story to the point that we’re 20% of the way through the book before the event that you’d expect to happen in the first 10% occurred and then 31% further before the subsequent plot point happens. This story just dragged, moving so slowly it began to feel glacial.

And this is where I’ll say that, while it’s obvious that Yuna’s eco-conscious personality was important to the author, she wasted far too much time on it. I consider myself to be reasonably eco-aware, someone who cares about the planet. But believe you me, by the time I had gotten to that 31% mark where the first interesting plot point actually happened, I was so damn sick and tired of reading about Yuna’s eco-plastic that I would have been perfectly fine if her world exploded. Anything to shut her up about plants, honestly. Don’t even get me started on the use of “oh my gourd,” something that could have been amusing as hell if we hadn’t been forced to sit through all of that dull writing about her work.

And this continues, by the way. We’re subjected to excessive summaries about her research and work deadlines through a good chunk of the novel—though it finally stops being overbearing and boring when her plant knowledge starts to be useful to the curse plot at literally the last 25% or so of the book. I’m over it. I don’t care. This isn’t what I picked up this book for.

Which brings me to the characters. Goodness, do we have a show don’t tell problem in this book. This problem is most egregious with Min-ho (though it exists with everyone from Yuna’s boss to her friends to her mother to her brief dating stints), unfortunately, which just makes the entire situation worse because this is the damn love interest. They’re all just so surface-level as far as development is concerned, existing with just the summarized personality traits and no genuine growth or development. And I’m sorry, but I just do not buy for a second that they love each other. There’s no experienced buildup, a ridiculous amount of it is summarized, and the love confessions? They’re basically just statements paired with brief summaries of quirks. Outside of his cat phase, these characters spend precious little time together, overshadowed by Min-ho’s personal assistant and his bandmade—my goodness, how?—primarily spending time together when they need to rush about for a kiss to keep him human.

Outside of that, there’s a lot of yearning and ridiculous reasons for why they can’t be seen together—are you serious, really? What possible reason could exist for creating a world in which these characters cannot be publicly dating? If it’s cultural, then that would be a different conversation, but the reason the book actually gives is that pop stars need to pretend to be single for PR and album selling reasons. Cue me facepalming repeatedly.

At this point, I’m already missing out on the humorous romp I was expecting—I didn’t laugh even once through this entire book. The story has been padded with so much unnecessary and boring scenes that by the time the plot gets moving, I’ve already lost all interest. And the plot is very much what you expect for a doofy story like this—the villain is a caricature with an absolutely ridiculous plot twist. The curse is resolved in the most anti-climactic of scenes, something meant to be very high stakes and dangerous, but instead just feels dramatic for drama’s sake. We all know how this is going to end, the were so unnecessary. Also, why couldn’t the villain just be

I truly feel horrible about how much I kind of hated this book, how disappointed I was in the characters, writing, and story. Everything about the premise screamed that this book had immense amounts of potential and I was so excited to pick it up, excited to find myself laughing at the wild things that occurred as a result of the cat kissing requirements—and we did get a little of this when Yuna went on that beach date with the doctor, but it’s so small amongst a sea of pointlessness that I’m just sad that we couldn’t have seen more of that and less of…whatever the heck the rest of this was.

*I received an ARC from NetGalley and the author in exchange for an honest review*

Oh my gourd, this was so freaking funny and cute! The fluffiness rivals a cat's toosh, and the humour had me pausing to giggle like a maniac. Seriously, I didn't expect to love this strange book so much!!

The writing and narrative reminds me a lot of Ali Hazelwood (I know we shouldn't compare, but the *allure*), and the cat-astrophes reminded me of the anime/ manga series 'The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today', along with the love interest being sooo Jinu from K-Pop Demon Hunters coded (he's so cheesy, suave and dedicated to winning his woman)

I really enjoyed Yuna as a main character, I love seeing a woman in STEM and I adored her enthusiasm. Like aforementioned, the love interest and K-Pop idol Min-ho was seriously the cutest both in cat form and as a human. Though an unusual romance, I think him being her cat for a while and getting to know Yuna really helped with their bond. Min-ho was there for Yuna when she needed him, and vice versa, plus he's the flirtiest, down bad man in Seoul, I swear.

To begin with, the plot does take a while to get going, I think it's around 30% through when we actually find out along with Yuna that Min-Min is actually idol Min-ho, who's been cursed by a crazy fan. I didn't mind the focus being on Yuna's job and pressures from work and family, especially because when she achieves so much towards the end it's super satisfying, plus Min-ho is there through it all, giving some paw-some comfort to her.

Overall, this was such an amusing, silly but purr-fect romcom read, giving all the tooth rotting sweetness and laugh out loud moments, creating such a entertaining read. I absolutely need everyone to read this, because it's for sure one of my favourites this year!

What if the stray cat you picked up from the alley is actually a super hot K-Pop Star? 🐈‍⬛

As a cat lover this premise immediately made me interested, together with the fact that the female protagonist is a plant Scientist 🌿 🥼

This was a fun lighthearted read and it's probably the perfect book for a K-Pop obsessed Teenager.

The romance storyline is limited to a couple of kisses, so I'd say it's absolutely appropriate for young readers.

As an adult, I think the romance was a little underdeveloped and I didn't really feel the chemistry.

Which brings me to my next point, as a biologist I have to say, the science in this book was not it.
First of all 'plant science' is not the same as developing a bioplastic. Those are two different subsets of scientist in my experience. The whole bioplastic thing didn't make a whole lot of sense.

But I really appreciated having a scientist as a main character and reading about her dedication and passion!

The only point where it was really unbelievable was when gave mushrooms as an example for a plant 😬💀

All in all, nice book, but I'm probably not the main demographic.

3.5 ⭐

Gut rating: ⭐⭐
CAWPILE rating: 2.00
Spice: Kisses
Series: Spotlights and Stars Book 1
ARC publication date: January 2nd 2026

Tropes: K-Pop star & nerdy girl romance, she rescues him, magic curse, manic pixie dream girl, eco-warrior, he falls first, jealous MMC

Quote: I back up a step out of self-preservation and quickly hold up my 100% cruelty-free hemp bag a little higher. See, no baby seals were clubbed for this eco-friendly accessory!

My synopsis: In Seoul, Korea, 4'11 environmental chemist Yuna Oh is under immense pressure - from her mum about her low paying job, her friends about her non-existent dating life, and her work about her slow progress in developing a natural replacement for plastic packaging. When she finds sick stray cat Min-min, Yuna finds a cuddly companion who seems to understand her on a deeper level and help her relax. What she doesn't realise is Min-min is the missing K-Pop star Min-ho trapped under a magical curse, with only a kiss each night returning him to human form. Can Yuna and Min-min reverse the curse without catching feelings?

My review: Unfortunately, this wasn't a well written book and I struggled to finish it. It isn't a romance story, but a YA fiction that eventually stumbles into romance. The first 32% of the book needs to be heavily trimmed to bring the main plot into focus, as the magical cat is very much kept in the background until too late to keep readers interested.

Yuna was a silly character, more teen manic pixie dream girl than a well developed lead character, with catchphrases like "oh my gourd" and silly nicknames for her lab equipment like flasky the flask. Her immaturity meant she could easily have been a highschool student working on a science project. Her environmental activism also came across as virtue signalling rather than something to aspire to.

The magic cat plot was heavily hinted at constantly before the reveal in such a way that made it feel a little ridiculous. I also couldn't understand why Min-min was so immediately jealous and obsessive over Yuna despite their lack of connection and interactions. It meant there was no chance for a slow burn friends to lovers plot.

With thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC.

The Purrfect Pop Star by Arisa May is an incredibly sweet, zero-spice read—and while it’s not my usual genre, it completely won me over.

I’ll admit the beginning was a little slow for me, but once I hit the halfway point, I was fully hooked. The story really finds its rhythm and becomes such a fun, cozy experience. I’m a total sucker for animals in books, and when you mix that with K-pop vibes? It was basically guaranteed to work for me.

If you’re looking for a lighthearted, wholesome read with charm, heart, and adorable animal moments—this one is absolutely worth picking up.

Thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and the author Arisa May for the ARC.

The book The Purrfect Pop Star by Arisa May is a fun and interesting story about confidence, love, and the spotlight in the K-pop world. The story follows plant scientist Yuna Oh, who works at Green Genius. Early on, we are introduced to several important people in her life, including her friends, co-workers, and her mother. Yuna lives a seemingly normal life, juggling work, friendships, and the pressure from her mother to meet someone and get married. this pretty common theme in asian households was really realistic. Everything changes when a cute little fluff ball named Min-min appears, who turns out to be the missing K-pop idol Min-ho from AXIOM, we find out throught the book Min-ho's story that add depth to how he reacts and takes care of Yuna, and his overall personality as a character.

After this encounter, the story becomes a series of fun and interesting events that turn Yuna’s life upside down, making it feel like a K-drama. The book was very visual and cute, and it honestly felt like I was watching a show. It was so heart-warming that I finished it in a single day. The plot was entertaining, Yuna was a relatable and quirky character, and her passion for plants felt genuine. I also feel like I learned a lot about plants while reading this book, some of the parts were a bit scientific but I get it, when we are really passionate about something we tend to get into the details that are not important to anyone but us!

Overall a nice read, it was fun, the idea was great, the characters were likable, I learned a thing or two about plants, it is a 5 stars for me and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Quick Summary: A "purrfectly" cute K-pop romance with magical elements

My Review: The Purrfect Pop Star by Arisa May is book #1 in the Spotlight & Stars series. It is categorized under "Entertainment & Pop Culture | General Fiction (Adult) | Romance." This novel is scheduled for release on 1/2/26.

About the Book: "What do you do when the stray cat you rescued turns into a world-famous pop star?"

In My Own Words: A STEMinist and a cursed musical idol cross paths in a delightfully original way. They must work together to solve the unique dilemma that they find themselves in.

About the Characters:

Yuna - > Super intelligent, enjoys an eco-friendly lifestyle, enthusiastically focused on her work, faces external pressures and expectations, kind and generous nature

Min Min - > Cuteness overload agent, protective of Yuna, reads people well...especially when it comes to Yuna

Min-ho - > K-pop star, visual for AXIOM, very mindful of fans, extremely aware of how he presents himself to public

About the Supporting Characters: The cast of characters in this very enchanting novel was perfectly positioned and utilized, in my opinion. I loved how different each individual was, and I loved how they played into the story.

About the Conflict: A curse from an obsessed fan causes a "cat-astrophic" chain of events in the lives of two unsuspecting people.

What I Liked/Loved:

✨ I loved the main characters. They were both so colorful, in terms of their attitude, behaviors, and particular quirks. This added to their charm, as far as I am concerned. The more I learned about them, the more I wanted to know them.

✨ I really loved the author's descriptive use of language. This was especially the case related to the setting, the food, and the K-pop influence on Korean culture.

✨ I liked how science talk was weaved into the storyline. As a science nerd who geeks out on all the things, it was like a golden glitter bomb.

✨ I really liked the totally original & extremely creative approach that the author took in telling this story. It was like a K-drama because of the sasaeng situation, but it was also like a rom-com because of what was happening between the leads. It was supernaturally spectacular.

My Final Say: I loved this story. It was highly entertaining. I enjoyed it so much that I have listed it as a more than meets the eye kind of book on my favorites shelf. It charmed me from the beginning. In the end, I confess that my reading experience (and my liking of this novel) was like the show that Yuna was drawn to. I, like her, could not stop myself from wanting more. Let's go!

This would be incredible as an audiobook. Further, I could definitely see it as a Netflix or Prime release.

Other: Readers who enjoy stories with magical mayhem, human transformations, K-pop drama/romantasy and fandom culture will like this novel.

[ARC REVIEW 📖]

The Purrfect Pop Star
Author : Arisa May

The story begins with plant biologist Yuna Oh who is working on a bioplastic research project under Mr. Han Sajang-nim at Green Genius. After a café meet-up, she was met by a "stray cat" who seemed to be sick (fried-chicken-poisoned) & took it to the vet. That was when things turned around for her, & I mean that not only as a cat mom. 😏

Well guess what? This same cat turned out to be that missing K-POP idol Min-ho from AXIOM, that everyone's been dying to look for. Plot twist? Well who could've guessed it was due to an insanely obsessive fan's curse? Not to mention that there was a temporary solution discovered for his dilemma; through a kiss once every three days can this feline become a human again. Hilarious! Then it was now up to Yuna & Min-ho's team (special mention to Ms. Bora, the strict & meticulous manager) to find the person (Ji-hyun a.k.a. Medusa) who did the curse (Operation Feline Extraction / Fe-xit for short) & stop this madness once & for all.

Here's a breakdown of what I like & not liked in this story :

I liked the plot, definitely interesting & enjoyable to read. There is a hint of magical realism & of course that touch of rom-com love, enough to give you butterflies in your stomach. I could especially relate to how her mother talks about Yuna's life, job & lovelife. A typical toxic asian culture & perspective that exists until now.

What I did not like, was that the dialogues were longdragging due to the extreme technical terms & jargon used to show Yuna's obsession about her scientific research on the Pak-sol 2.0 project. The number of chapters could have been reduced then. Some scenes were also awkward, cringey & sounded stilted, but probably done on purpose to depict Yuna's nerdy character. Plus there were too many supportive characters, but none really stood out except for Eun-bin - her extremely loud & pushy bestfriend.

All in all, it was a fun read. Especially loved Min-ho's life as a feline (Min-min). Thought it was plain adorable! This book will definitely be a hit to K-POP fans! Imo, it could even be a K-drama!

Thank you Netgalley & Victory Editing for this opportunity! It was great to read the afterword and find out that the author had so much fun writing this 49-chapter of a novel. 🫶

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received an ARC of from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I love the idea of a cat curse, on a kpop idol its a hilarious idea - in all the right ways, and Yuna being a woman in STEM is such a 'heck yeah' moment but this book is incredibly slow. To the point I had to skim read at times to get to the next part, the set up of the cat curse is great but it is slow, there's quite a few chapters that could be condensed in my opinion and still get the main aim across.

Min-ho as a cat is very posessive of Yuna and clearly wants to help her as much as possible and yet I don't see him claw anyone's eyeballs out (shame - hopefully that comes in a different book!) Yuna being a woman in STEM I'm coming back to because its just such a nice change, I'm not a science girlie but I am an esports one so seeing women in male dominated sectors being written more often is so refreshing and makes a great change of pace.

There were a couple of plot points early on that are wrapped up really fast that I wondered if they could've instead been teased out across the book - like the cheating husband of the woman early on who Yuna's best friend was unknowingly dating. That could've been teased out a bit better and wrapped up less speedily to add pace and tension.

Like others have said I'm not sure how much of a romance this is, it kind of falls into it after a long time and comes secondary to other parts of the story. The writing style is very young almost diary like - it could do with being set in past tense to make the first person really work, having said that I can see some of my teenagers loving it.

I love the idea and can appreciate building up the plot but it is incredibly slow which can make it feel a bit of a slog at times to get to the real meat of the story. I really wanted to love this but I did struggled to push through and ended up DNF'ing as it just didn't work for me. I wish the author the best of luck with the rest of the series.

Yuna, a plant scientist, is mostly focused on her work developing a new product that's biodegradable packaging. One day, when leaving a meet-up with her friend, Yuna comes across a cat who is sick from eating fried chicken. Being the kind person she is, Yuna ends up taking the cat immediately to the vet and when no chip is found, she takes him home to be cared for until she can find the owner. Two months later, Yuna's friend convinces her to kiss the cat to see if he becomes a prince charming, Yuna completes the task then goes to sleep when she laughs about it, but when she wakes up to a naked K-pop star Min-ho from the group AXIOM, she loses it. Turns out that Min-ho has been cursed by a fan during a meet and greet. The only thing that will keep him from turning into a cat is to kiss him every three days. Yuna moves into Min-ho's luxury penthouse to make the task either, but soon feelings begin to develop and the danger increases, not only from the curse, but from having to hide out from everyone to keep AXIOM on track for their return to starlight.

This was a cute, lighthearted read. Purrrfect book for a teenager that is super into K-pop. The storyline has only a few kisses, so this is giving YA focused. The beginning moves a little slow, but I think my favorite part is when Min-ho is a cat because he is hilarious - when he growls at her date on the beach, when he runs from her being in a towel after a shower, and stopping her from drinking too much coffee. I enjoyed Yuna as she was a woman in STEM and very passionate about what she does and protecting the environment.

Thanks Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Why did I read? It sounded fun and I love cats. Would I read again? Prob not because I just don't love YA-ish romances

When a cursed KPop Star falls in love with a Plant Scientist; the premise intrigued me immediately. Also throwing in a bit of fantasy/magical realism.

Yuna Oh rescues a cat in a random allergy as she’s caught in the rain one day. She takes the cat home with her & pretty much adopts it. However, the critter mysteriously seems to act human? Turns out Min Min is actually Min-Ho a member of K Pop group, AXIOM that has been missing! Min-Ho has been cursed by an obsessed fan & Yuna has to kiss him every 3 days in order for him to remain human.

Battling a near impossible deadline with her work project & the ongoing situation with Min-Ho, Yuna reevaluates herself & discovers her self-worth; also to the possibility of actually being with Min-Ho. He on the other hand already adores her :)

This was a ridiculously cute read & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Book 2 comes out in March & I will definitely be continuing with the Series.

Other Points:
*Her co worker, Hyun-woo gives me the icks! Very conceited & talks down to Yuna. I couldn’t believe the words that came out of his mouth!

*On the personal side I can definitely relate to Yuna, her Mother seems to be the overbearing type & picks at her constantly. This is common in almost every Asian culture unfortunately. During one particularly bad phone call I was literally screaming at her to hang up the phone!

*The plot was apparently based on a folk tale but gender swapped! I thought that was pretty interesting! The author did a great job in weaving it into the story.

Final Rating: 4.25 stars

I obtained copy of the book via NetGalley & this is my honest review.

This was such a cute, playful, young adult romance story. I was hooked with the story line of MMC, Minho, who is a missing Kpop idol transformed into a feline cat by a crazy obsessed fan. However, by fate Minho in cat form ends up in the care of FMC, Yuna, a plant scientist. Little does she know that her “cat” is actually the missing kpop idol. Working together they make an agreement to live together and plan to kiss every 3 days to help Minho keep his human form. Working together along with a few other characters, they must find the crazy obsessed fan to break the curse once and for all.

As for the plot, I truly enjoyed the adventure and navigation of Yuna truly taking care of Minho in feline form. Arisa May sets the korean drama vibes between the two characters learning about one another and showing their care/love through actions. I also enjoyed Yuna finding her own life pathway regardless of what anyone tells her!

I will say I truly love the build up of developing the romance relationship, side characters, and finding more information on how to break the curse. However, I felt like breaking the curse was very fast and ended quite quickly. I am so looking forward to another book about the other AXIOM members and/or more about Minho & Yuna.

So if you are looking for an adventure to uncover/break a curse, developing romance story, and following your own path in life look no further.
This Arisa May book is for you!

Thank you Arisa May, NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ARC read. I truly enjoyed reading this story and hope in the future there is another book coming out!

This was cute, chaotic, and fun. The puns are plentiful, Yuna is funny, and it was really nice to read something fairly low stakes after all of the tense fantasy I've consumed this year. Yuna finds a sick cat on the street one day, and takes him home after getting him fixed up at the vet. Turns out, the cat is actually a K-pop star who was cursed by a fan. Min-ho's antics as a cat are hilarious and his attraction to Yuna is cute. Yuna's friends and family are constantly on her case about not dating, and the not-a-cat situation gets complicated when the only way to keep the curse at bay is to kiss Min-ho every three days. The horror! Nonetheless, they spend the book trying to break the curse and spend lots of time together doing so.

The book reads like a stream of consciousness, and it did take me a bit to warm up to the style. Lots of em dashes, parentheses, side commentary, jokes....but once I got past that I was in. I do think several jokes made by characters are way too on the nose or book-referential ("What if all this time, your cat’s under a curse and the key to turning him back into a hot guy is just one kiss away?”) and they took me out of the story a bit. I did have a good chuckle when a monstera was called a "rare plant" but I think the science balanced well with the super stardom and the sprinkling of magic. Yuna is career focused and it's really nice to see a guy that doesn't want to take that away from her.

Overall, a quick and fun read that sets the foundation for a K-pop centered romantic series. Thanks NetGalley & publisher for the ARC

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you mashed up The Frog Prince with the high-stakes world of K-Pop Demon Hunters, The Purrfect Pop Star is exactly that. We get a glimpse into a sugary, contemporary rom-com with a magical twist.

This was a fun lighthearted read and it's probably the perfect book for a K-Pop obsessed Teenager. The romance storyline is limited to a couple of kisses, so l'd say it’s more YA focused, but very cute.

The heart of this story lies with our FMC, Yuna. It was incredibly refreshing to see a female lead who is a dedicated, passionate scientist. Watching her balance her love for the environment with the chaos of her personal life made her an instantly relatable and endearing character.

The first third of the book is where the story truly shines. For the first part, our MMC Min-ho is stuck in cat form, and it is absolute gold. His feline antics and the hilarious trouble he causes for Yuna kept me laughing out loud. During this "cat phase," the chemistry and bond between the two characters felt incredibly warm and charming.

However, once Min-ho sheds the fur and returns to human form, the pacing becomes a bit sluggish. While their interactions remain sweet, I found myself genuinely missing the chaotic "cat time" that made the beginning so special.

This is a lighthearted, fun read that provides a fascinating look into the intense working culture in Korea. Would love to recommend this book if you love K-Pop vibes and feline hijinks.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the author in exchange for an honest review.

Yuna Oh is a very clever and driven scientist working to better the world through biodegradable plastics. With deadlines looming, she doesn't really have the time to take care of the sick cat she finds in an alley, but she can't leave it to suffer alone. When she discovers that her cat is the missing K-pop star, Min-ho, her life takes an even crazier turn, as she needs to kiss him every three days to keep him human. As the two grow closer, Yuna is determined to lift his curse, but the crazy fan who cursed Min-ho has a different idea.

Yuna is fantastic protagonist, who is truly passionate about her scientific endeavors and helping the environment. It takes a while for her to realize something is odd about her new cat, which allows us to fully appreciate the pressures she is under both at work and in her personal life. This makes the addition of balancing the stress of Min-ho's K-pop world seem almost insurmountable. But Yuna refuses to keep that from doing all she can to help Min-ho. Comparatively, Min-ho is head over heels over Yuna, but she can't believe that someone like her could be into her someone like her. As the book progresses, she gains self confidence and has to determine for herself exactly what she's willing to do to stay with Min-ho.

I loved this book. It is a true delight of zany Korean drama mixed with a taste of the little supernatural. A fantastically fun read that reminds you of your favorite K-drama.

★★★★☆ Review: The Purrfect Pop Star
by The Purrfect Pop Star

The Purrfect Pop Star is pure fun wrapped in glitter, confidence, and just the right amount of heart. Arisa May delivers a story that’s playful and charming while still exploring the pressures of fame, identity, and staying true to yourself when the spotlight never really turns off.

The characters are instantly lovable, especially the pop star at the center of it all, whose journey balances sweetness with vulnerability. I adored the lighthearted humor and the cozy, feel-good moments, which made this an easy book to sink into. The romance adds a soft sparkle rather than overpowering the story, complementing the main character’s growth beautifully.

A few plot points felt a little predictable, and I wished some side characters had been explored more deeply, but neither took away from the overall enjoyment. This book knows what it wants to be and delivers it with confidence and charm.

Overall, The Purrfect Pop Star is a delightful, uplifting read that’s perfect when you’re in the mood for something cute, comforting, and full of personality. A cozy four-star escape that left me smiling 🎤🐾✨

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. This has not affected my opinion in any way.

This is such a cute read.

K-pop idol Minho is cursed into a cat by an obsessive fan and ends up in the arms of Yuna, a plant scientist. The only way he can temporarily turn back into a human is through a kiss, once every three days. Together with Yuna, and with the help of Minho’s stern, impeccably organised, taekwondo black-belt manager, they set out to track down the obsessive fan and break the curse once and for all.

This book is a mixture of a lot of science talks and life of a k-pop idol, with some magical realism and cute love lines. When I say a lot of science talks, I mean A LOT of science talks. You’ll be reading Yuna’s passion for sustainability and project Pak-Sol 2.0. At times, it almost feels as if the author is worried we might forget that Yuna is a plant scientist working toward a more sustainable world that we are reminded at nearly every turn of her actions and thoughts.

The Purrfect Pop Start may not have the most perfect plot, some parts were cringey, but I had fun reading this book. I kinda miss it now that I’ve finished reading it.

If you are a fan of K-drama with the unlikely romance between a science geek and a K-pop idol, you should give this book a try!

Book Review
The Purrfect Pop Star
By: Arisa May

If you are looking for a fun escape into a sweet Kpop romance, then take a chance with The Purrfect Pop Star. It is a cozy romance with a bit of magic and curses, lots of plants, and furry cuddles. When plant scientist and extrovert Yuna saves a stray cat, she never imagined such a choice would change her life and heart forever. Not only is the handsome feline making her curb her caffeine indication, he acts like the cat version of a celebrity idol. Little does she know her cat just maybe Min-ho the missing lead of AXIOM pop group. When curses and love collide, does she have what it takes to save her popstar and her plant projects. Find out in this purrfect read for cat fans and even a sworn dog lover too.

I thoroughly enjoyed Yuna and Min-ho. Both characters were sweet and grew in their relationship very naturally through the story. I did have some issues with secrecy at the end, but hopefully that will be further revealed in others stories throughout the series. I liked how they discovered and solved the curse, it added a fun element to the book. Looking forward to more from this world.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Content: Romance: PG-sweet kisses
Language: Mild-some (OMG and Axx) throughout the book

A sweet & funny snow-day read! I received a free ARC (thanks, BookSirens 😊) and am voluntarily leaving my honest review:

Yuna is a funny FMC in an absurd situation with a bit of magic sprinkled on top. While the premise of this book (cat that is not a cat) initially had me expecting something more like K.M. Shea’s “Gate of Myth and Power” series, the story’s pacing, silly vibe, and dramatic storyline were more in line with the K-drama/WebToon genres (less urban fantasy dry humor; more goofy like Netflix’s “K-Pop Demon Hunters”).

If Goodreads allowed half-star reviews, I would rate this book 3.5 ⭐️ because so many of Min-min’s “cat” interactions were too dog-like (I struggled with this in particular because my personal feline overlord would NEVER deign to act in such a way!) and because I was initially expecting more of an urban fantasy/paranormal romance, so Yuna’s melodramatic coworkers initially felt out of place.

Rounding up to 4 stars today because I thoroughly enjoyed the K-drama level silliness that ensued once Min-ho’s secret identity and cat (curse) were out of the bag. Plus, I’m inexplicably hungry for fried chicken, kimchi fried rice, and ramyeon after finishing this story, and look forward to Leo and CJ’s stories next.

“The Purrfect Popstar” by Arisa May
1 pepper and 4 stars
This is my introduction to Arisa May and she did not disappoint. Full disclosure…I did not have an inkling what this book was about and the first couple of chapters I was saying to myself WTF is going on but I kept reading and reading and all of a sudden I’m at the end. I do love a good k-drama and I can see this becoming a full blown tv show to be completely honestly. Just has those vibes. Yuna and Min-ho are actually so adorable. I always love ready about women in STEM. I also enjoyed seeing the dynamic between Yuna and her mom along with getting such a deep backstory from Min-Ho. I think these things added depth to their characters. I will say that I feel like Eu-bin, as Yuna’s bestie, should have been more involved. I understand that she has her life but not telling your best friend important info is crazy to me. Really enjoyed the connection to the folk tale. Thought that was a nice touch. All in all, great read. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

The Purrfect Pop Star is an adorable, feel-good story that’s full of heart, charm, and just the right touch of sparkle. Arisa May delivers a sweet and uplifting read that made me smile from start to finish, blending cute moments with a gentle message about confidence, friendship, and following your dreams.

The characters are endearing and easy to root for, and the pop-star journey feels light, fun, and playful. There’s a warmth to the story that makes it comforting rather than dramatic, with plenty of wholesome moments that balance the excitement of fame. The pacing keeps things moving while still allowing the emotional beats to land softly.

While it leans into familiar tropes, it does so in a cozy, satisfying way that fits the tone perfectly. This is the kind of book you pick up when you want something cheerful, comforting, and guaranteed to lift your mood.

A sweet four-star read for anyone who loves cute stories, gentle growth arcs, and a little pop-star magic with a lot of heart. 🐾✨📖

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.75 stars)

This was a fun, easy read. It was a kind of book you pick up when you just want something light and enjoyable. A cursed K-pop idol who turns into a cat already sets the tone, and I went in expecting something playful and low-stress.

It reminded me a lot of The Beauty Inside (2018 K-drama). In this book, the MMC transforms into a cat, while in the drama the FMC turns into a different person, but both stories share the same core idea: dealing with a transformation you can’t control while trying to build a real connection and keeping a big secret. I really liked that theme of acceptance and seeing someone for who they are, not what they appear to be.

Overall, this was a cute, entertaining, and easy read. Perfect for when you’re in the mood for something fun with K-drama vibes.

Ok, this book was hilarious.
While The Purrfect Popstar by Arisa MayArisa May didn't fit the genres I normally read (since it was set in modern times and was not urban fantasy) I still really enjoyed this book!
Although I could be biased, because...cats.

I really liked the FMC, Yuna, and found her really relatable.
Min-ho was...ok, I guess. I just didn't really like him much for whatever reason, although i did like him as Min-min the cat.

This book is basically just all fluff, but I would absolutely recommend it for when you're looking for a fun and cozy read that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The Purrfect Pop Star is an adorable, lighthearted romcom that reads exactly like a K-drama in book form. Yuna is a quirky, intelligent, eco-conscious scientist who has zero interest in dating—until her rescued cat turns out to be a very real, very handsome K-pop idol cursed into feline form. The setup is fun, ridiculous in the best way, and easy to sink into.

The dynamic between the oblivious, nerdy heroine and the flirty, jealous pop star MMC is charming and playful, making this a great comfort read. I enjoyed the cozy vibes, the romcom pacing, and the sheer silliness of helping with this particular curse (honestly, sign me up). While the plant puns weren’t quite my thing, they didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. If you’re looking for a cute, low-stakes, K-drama–style romance with a magical twist, this one’s worth picking up.

This book was so much fun!!
I loved everything about it, the story was so interesting and it kept getting better!
Yuna meets Minho when he's a cat, he's been cursed by a fan, and after she found this out the only way to keep him in his human form is by kissing. I loved every aspect of the book, i liked Yuna research for Park-sol 2.0, a new sustainable packaging, i loved her coworker, even the insufferable Hyun-woo, and obviously i loved Minho in is every form. When he was a cat he was so funny, the little game they had to answer the question, and in his human form is just as cute!
I loved the mistery, the journey to find the crazy fan that cursed Minho and there is so much more, I didn't know what to expect from the finale!
This reading was so out of my usual type of book and I'm glad i step out of my comfort zone!

What a wonderfully romantic and fun read The Purrfect Pop Star ended up being! As someone who enjoys a good romantic K-Drama and listening to K-Pop, this was a must read. I adore the concept and that really drew me in, but the storyline and the characters was what kept me furiously turning the pages. I laughed, I swooned, I truly had such a fun time with this story. Who would have thought Yuna saving a cat would lead to one of the most interesting moments of her life. When the cat reveals himself as Min-ho, the missing lead of AXIOM, that's when things really take a turn. Seeing as these two grow closer not only with the needed kisses but also as they work together to break the curse, their romance truly led them to their purrfect pair! I can't wait to dive into more Spotlight & Stars stories!

Okay but this book was so cute.
The idea alone pulled me in — rescuing a stray cat only to find out he’s actually a cursed K-pop idol?? Absolutely unhinged in the best way. I loved how fun and light this story was while still giving us a proper romance.
Yuna was such a fun main character. I really liked her nerdy science brain and how normal she felt compared to Min-ho’s pop star life. And Min-ho?? Sweet, charming, a little dramatic — I get it.
Did I have a few tiny things I’d change? Yeah, but nothing major at all. This was one of those romances that just made me smile, kick my legs, and giggle while reading.
Overall, a really cozy, magical rom-com with cats, kisses, and chaos. If you’re in the mood for something fun and fluffy, this is definitely worth picking up 🐱💋✨
