Resonance of Souls by S.G. Castell

This book devoured me. From chapter one, the tension grabs you by the throat and does not let go. The world-building? Absolutely stunning—rich, immersive, and instantly gripping. Aelorea and Rhyven’s dynamic is everything: enemies to reluctant allies to lovers, and the transition is seamless. It’s not a slow burn, but it’s not rushed either—it flows, and you feel every beat of their bond deepen. The political intrigue adds layers, the emotional stakes are high, and the romance? Brutal, beautiful, and unforgettable. I read this in one sitting because putting it down wasn’t an option.

That epilogue? Absolutely wrecked me—in the best way. We are just getting started, and I already need book two like air.

If you’re into dark fantasy, political tension, and romance that burns and bruises, Resonance of Souls is a must-read. Highly, highly recommend.

need more

Let me start with a question…

What if you found out your love could literally power the world?

Sounds unhinged, right? Well buckle up.

Resonance of Souls drops us into a brutal, twisted world built on submission and power, where love isn’t currency, it’s forbidden. There’s no equal exchange. No softness. Just pain, spectacle, and men who treat suffering like entertainment.

And then there’s Aelorea.

Miss girl said, “Absolutely not.”

She refuses to be another pawn in a system designed to break her. Watching her push back against a society that thrives on control was satisfying in that slow-burn, fist-clenching kind of way. She’s fierce, emotional, stubborn, and completely unwilling to quietly accept the role carved out for her.

Now let’s talk about her mother.

That woman? A witch with a capital B. Every time she appeared I was ready to throw the whole book across the room. Toxic doesn’t even begin to cover it.

And then… there’s Rhyven.

Sir.

The tension? Immaculate. The presence? Commanding. The way he steps into scenes? Dangerous in the best way. He’s the kind of character who doesn’t have to try and somehow that makes it worse (or better, depending on your preferences). Let’s just say the chemistry is very much there and leave it at that.

This book blends dark fantasy, power dynamics, rebellion, and emotional intensity into something that hooks you and refuses to let go. It’s gritty, dramatic, and full of “oh no she did NOT just do that” moments.

I’ve honestly never read anything quite like this before, and that originality pulled me in from the very first pages. The magic system, in particular, felt fresh and unique.

The story follows Aelorea and Rhyven, bound in a forced marriage meant to secure political and trade alliances—she is a princess of purity & he is a prince of war. They are never meant to fall in love. Love is forbidden.

As their journey unfolds, they uncover layers of systemic corruption and lies within both of their kingdoms. Their growing love becomes the cure for exposing the truth—and the hope of rebuilding something better in its place.

The epilogue was incredible and completely solidified my excitement for the sequel.

DNFed at 67%, this started off super strong and I did really enjoy the beginning of this but unfortunately I lost intrest along the way.

I really liked the world, I thought it was super intresting especially the power dynamic and how opposite Rhyven and Aeloreas worlds/kingdoms really were, having them navigate through certain challenges presented to them. The magic also seems super intresting, while I didnt finish this book I feel like it was leading up to more of a reveal of how the magic worked and its role within the world, it seemed quite unique how it was described in the little snippets throughout.

I am slumping so please take this with a grain of salt. I am super grateful that S.G Castell reached out to me to read her book, and while I loved the sound of the description and have heard such good things I couldn't connect with it as others did and thats okay.

I gave it a good go and its something I may return to read in the future, but for now I am going to put it down.

If you like fast burn romance, forced proximity, arranged marriage, and enemy kingdoms, this could be your next read.

This was such an interesting world. The magic system felt unique and thoughtfully constructed, and you can absolutely see the care that went into the world-building. There are some really strong, imaginative ideas here, and I genuinely appreciated the scope of what the author was trying to do.

The writing itself is also beautiful. It has a lyrical quality, and there were passages that were truly well done.

For me personally, though, I struggled to fully connect with the characters. I never quite found myself emotionally invested in their journey, which made it harder to feel the weight of the romance. The relationship development felt a bit quick to me, and I think I just needed more time on the page to really believe in and root for them.

That said, this very well could have been a “wrong book, wrong time” situation for me. If you love epic political fantasy, arranged marriage, and lush world-building, this may absolutely work for you. While it wasn’t a perfect fit for my tastes, I can see the strengths in the world and the ambition behind the story.

Resonance of Souls completely captivated me with its incredibly unique magic system. I’ve honestly never read anything quite like it before, and that originality pulled me in from the very first pages. I devoured this book whenever I could, constantly wishing I had more uninterrupted time to read. If it weren’t for real life and demanding kids, I easily could have finished this in a single day. A truly immersive and unforgettable read.

This was a fast paced romantasy that had me not wanting to put it down! The magic system is like nothing I’ve read before. It’s enemies to lovers with an arranged marriage and lots of corruption!

With this book, the author has aimed for a different direction than the usual romantasy books, and it shows! She had created a magicsystem and worldbuilding that is very much a mix between fantasy with a strong doctrine and their own kind of technology I would say.

«I am being sacrificed to a monster by my priest—like a sacrament he intends to break.»

This is the first line, sucking the reader right into where our FMC gets forced into a marriage with the MMC through a magical binding that will ensure complianse from her.

Where she is from, cleansing «impurities» is of importance, performance is everything, and it will bring your straight into how they have «cleansing rituals» that will make your brows shoot right up. Suppressing women is their speciality.

He is the «beast» known for brutality. His country, on the other hand, is where they break women.

The book is written very much detail oriented, with political schemes bearing us through the story. It felt like watching a episode of game of thrones, where you get to see the politics working you through twists and turns. The journey taking you through countries, friendships and realationship building up to the climax to unravel and shake the very foundation of the magic system. The arc of the FMC and MMC will leave you very satisfied, the book is very well written, with both spice and action enough to leave you hanging on as a reader. If you as a reader needs something different, this will serve you well.

From the opening chapter, Resonance of Souls had me completely under its spell. The slow, simmering tension between Princess Aelorea and Commander Rhyven Draegor drew me in immediately, and I never wanted to look away. I loved watching their relationship transform from a reluctant, politically forced union into something real and deeply emotional. The enemies-to-lovers journey felt so authentic every hesitant word, stolen glance, and fragile moment of trust built beautifully on the last. When their defenses finally began to fall, I was already hopelessly invested in them as a couple.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the incredible magic system. The concept of resonance magic was unlike anything I’ve read before—creative, mysterious, and woven seamlessly into both the worldbuilding and the characters’ inner lives. It wasn’t just a backdrop; it shaped who Aelorea and Rhyven were and how they connected with each other. Combined with the political intrigue and constant sense of danger, it created an atmosphere that felt immersive and alive. I felt my heart ache in some scenes and race in others, and the story stayed with me long after I finished.

This is the kind of fantasy romance that reminds me why I love the genre so much. It’s dark but tender, intense yet hopeful, and filled with characters who are beautifully imperfect. S.G. Castell captured themes of healing, resilience, and the courage it takes to choose love in such a moving way. I couldn’t put this book down, and I already know I’ll be coming back to experience Aelorea and Rhyven’s story again. Definitely worth the read.

This book...I am not even sure where to begin, but it had me gripped in from the beginning.

This is not your typical fantasy/romantasy. The author did a fantastic job of creating a different kind of magic system, a world full of high stakes politics, and a love story with a forced marriage where the FMC and MMC go from enemies to reluctant allies to lovers.

I absolutely loved the dynamic with Aelorea and Rhyven. The transition in their relationship is written so well and while it is somewhat of a slow burn, it is not fully. The way that their bond is created and deepens throughout the story is so good. The two of them have both grown up in worlds where they are sacrificed without even really knowing it and with brutalities of different kinds, and they are facing everything together and learning the true realities and who they really are.

The magic system, the high stakes politics, and the world building are done so well and will keep you pulled in wanting to know what happens next. Aelorea and Rhyven absolutely blow up the foundation of everything everybody has known and thought for years. Great things are coming, but resistance is absolutely expected. I can't wait for the next book!

Resonance of Souls by S.G. Castell is a dark, immersive fantasy romance— the book pulls you straight into a world shaped by doctrine, control, and a chillingly magic system, one I haven't come across in another romantasy book.

Princess Aelorea is forced into a magically binding marriage meant to ensure her obedience, born from a society obsessed with “cleansing” impurities and suppressing women through ritual and performance. Commander Rhyven Draegor, known as the brutal “beast,” rules from a land just as dangerous in its own way. The contrast between their worlds and the political schemes tying them together creates constant tension and intrigue.

The resonance magic is creative and deeply woven into both the worldbuilding and the characters’ emotional arcs.

The enemies-to-lovers romance between Aelorea and Rhyven is emotional and beautifully earned. They don't stay enemies for long. The bond tying them together ensures that they each feel each other. There is still miscommunication even with the tether between them. Dark yet tender, intense but hopeful, Resonance of Souls delivers in every aspect. The ending is satisfying while making you excited for the next book. Definitely worth the read.

Thank you, S.G. Castell, for this ARC!
We start this book off strong, with the FMC claiming to be sold to a monster. A forced marriage between Princess Aelorea of Solennea and Commander Rhyven Draegor of Vardania. She was raised to be pure, that to feel is to be corrupt. Rhyven was raised to be a weapon; culture dictates that dominance is the key to power.
From the moment of their marriage, they are tested, first through the demands of Solennea, and then later, the ruin of Vardania.
Aelorea and Rhyven start rocky, not knowing how to be vulnerable with each other, with a bond that forces them to know each other's feelings; it is hard to keep their walls built. As the story progresses, we see their bond and love for one another grow, a love they refuse to let those around them corrupt. They are tested multiple times to appease those around them, to try and tear them apart.
The magic system is so unique, and the glossary at the back of the book helped me understand the system so much better, as it can be a bit confusing, as it is introduced in a very rushed manner.
I can not wait to see what comes out in the next books within this series.

To be honest I am just starting my romantasy journey and haven't read many... but I am so glad I found this book it has everything you would want for your epic romantasy --> passion/love, drama, shady black market magic trades, tension, villains (who are truly unlikeable) and heroes, a unique magical system that you learn more about throughout the book, a fierce warrior prince who is brutal but tender only for her... yes please! It has you wondering if our couple will ever have a happy ever after when so many people want to pull them apart.

The Epilogue left me wanting the next book now... like seriously when is it coming out?

This is my first book from this author and it will not be my last. I am already asking how quickly the second book will be out and if its on two particular characters that I fell in love with..

Resonance of Souls has a storyline that is refreshing, unique and I was pleasantly surprised. This has political intrigue with a touch of enemies to lovers, force marriage, forced proximity and a unique magical abilities that are driven by emotion.

I loved both MC’s and I enjoyed watching their character growth as the story progressed. The supporting characters have depth and are not just wanted sided. This story goes to uncover so much corruption within this world that you end up not wanting to put down. You want to know what is next. How the characters in the book maneuver all the challenges they are thrown at them.

Needless to say this is a great debut novel and I can’t wait to read the next book.

❣️This book had me completely under its spell right from the beginning! What draws you in is the relatability of the characters and the bold approach to darker themes, along with characters you'd find yourself despising.
❣️This story is a masterful blend of captivating world-building, suspenseful tension, and a perfectly executed slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance that has held me spellbound since the first page.
❣️Aelorea and Rhyven, with their raw, powerful personas and beautiful imperfections, share a palpable chemistry.
❣️The dark, emotional narrative and immersive world-building make this a compelling read for anyone who loves romantasy, and the anticipation for the sequel is already building up.
❣️Being the first in the series, it promises an epic journey, and I'm excited to see the direction the author will take it.

If you haven't read this yet, then you are missing out!! Just WOW!

When I tell you I devoured this book!!

Listen, when you've read one Romantacy, you have read them all, right? NOPE! This one was so much different than all the rest. Yes, it had a lot of the same tropes, but the actual story? The plot? The flow? The magic system? It was refreshing! It was kind of an insta love situation, but it made sense, and the love between Aelorea and Rhyven felt organic and fated.

There was world-building, politics, corruption everywhere, unwavering love, so much devastation and horrific situations that the main characters had to endure, and it was beautiful. And the fact that this was all fit perfectly into a less than 375-page book??? *chefs kiss*

I am very much so not very patiently waiting for the next book to come out!

I have to go with a 4.5 for this read! This book in a direction that i was not expecting and Im so glad! The magic system was far from anything else I’ve read and so unique. The developments uncovered towards the end were so well done!
I only wish there would have been a little more detail on the FMC and MMCs lives before one another. I wanted to know more about how the MMC had the reputation he did, I feel like I had to speculate. I’m a nosey person, give me the tea! I think hearing more of their childhoods would have really added to the story.
With all of that being said, I loved this book. I feel like a lot of fantasy/romantasy I’ve been reading has become predictable and redundant, I can’t say 100% that that was NOT the case here. I was holding my breath in some parts and all but panting in others🫣🤭. I can’t wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed this story and devoured this book — I truly couldn’t put it down. The writing style was unique and completely captivated me from early on. The author layered the story well, slowly building the world, the characters, and the underlying tension in a way that felt intentional had me emotionally invested.

This felt different from the usual dark romantasy I typically read. The magic system was unique and woven naturally into both the worldbuilding and the characters’ lives, which made it feel grounded and believable. There is also a strong political element to this darker story that added depth and kept the stakes feeling real throughout.

Overall, this was a thoughtful, immersive read that stayed with me even after I finished. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing this series.

Thank you to S.G Castell for this advance reader copy.

The book was a little slow for me at times, but I pushed through; all in all, it was an unexpected delight! The world building, as always in fantasy books, was phenomenal! Writing was beautiful, descriptive and easy to be hooked into the world. Watching the FMC/MMC evolve from beginning to end through multiple pov’s was endearing; especially Rhyven’s pov bc *sigh, why can’t all men think that way!? lol!

The storyline was unique. The idea of using negative emotions, harvested into crystals, then using it to literally power up and sustain your livelihood is insane to me- and the way they retrieved it? Unthinkable. This story made me relate real world events, and all the suspicious activities going on that we know nothing about. I highlighted so many passages/quotes: “what words are adequate when you discover your entire civilization is a carefully constructed slaughterhouse…”

This is my first 5 Star read of 2026 and im so bless to have received this book. the story had my heart pushed and pull to its limited, I mean the way even though you know they doing something to proctect someone it still hurts. Aelorea is a Princess from a land that run by people who thing its a sin to show any s to the point that they punish those who show in a horriable way. Rhyven is athe prince right across the border who land is opposite they feed of the the fear and volince and if you show weakness you are done for. this Story had me hook from start to finish and i definitely getting me a shelftrohpy. i honeslty Cant wait for book 2 if you looking for slow burned, arranged marriage, Magic system an some action and soul Connection this if for you.

4.25⭐️Wow this was a wild ride. This book was originally presented to me as a Romantasy, but it felt more like science fiction with romance. The magical system is more like transferring of energy from objects that’s fuel society. The FMC and MMC are forced to marry to keep peace between their two territories and more for economic trade than for romance. However, they do fall for each other rather quickly. It’s more reluctant allies to lovers.

There is a lot of political intrigue with systematic corruption, mass manipulation, and lies. There’s a lot of layers to this story to uncover, and kept me interested along the way.

This was definitely different from what I’ve ever read, and the ending sets you up for the next book. I am curious to how this story will continue to unfold!

“From enemies forced together, to lovers who can’t let go.” This quote best describes the love story our two MC go through. Aelora and Ryhven are forced into a marriage for political and trade alliances. She being a princess of purity and him a prince of war. They are not supposed to fall in love. Love is dangerous and forbidden. But from the from their first meeting there is no denying the want they have for each other. What they share is risky for both their safety and those around them. How will they navigate their new feelings and bond that is formed. Will love be enough to conquer the system they used to believe in?????

Dark fantasy romance? Hell yes!!!

This book had me hooked. The tension between the two main characters is so good, and I loved watching them fight their feelings while being forced together 🖤 The struggle to be together made everything feel more intense, and by the end? They were absolutely powerful together 🔥🖤
If you love arranged marriage and forced proximity, I 100% recommend this book.... The story is full of nonstop tension and cliffhangers that kept me saying “just one more chapter.”

The magic system also deserves a shoutout WOOOW it’s unique and deeply connected to both characters, which made their relationship feel sooo emotional. Definitely a fun, addictive read.

I wasn't sure what in the world to expect from this book. I love the cover and synopsis. From the moment I opened it on my kindle, I was hooked!! The writing and flow from both Aelora and Rhyven povs was riveting. Though I prefer Aelora, since her life and her thoughts felt more interesting, with all that she was suffering and dealing with, I still enjoyed Rhyven. How quickly he fell for his bride but also how quickly he was to keep injustice and humiliation from her door. The plot was intricate and while there is a HFN with them as a couple, theres so much coming. I can feel it and see it in tidbits throughout the story.

This book was amazing. Definitely enemies to loves book if you like them. This book has some dark elements please check your trigger warnings. The main female character is such a strong character and I loved reading her character development in this story. She went from a meek little girl to a woman that is playing chess while you’re playing checkers. This book does deal with a lot of political corruption and not really understanding who the real villain is. But this book was really good. I would highly recommend if you like dark fantasy books.

This book had me in a chokehold from the very beginning! It is a romantasy but with more ordinary people instead of fae. It is dark at points and there are characters that you will absolutely despise! But the main characters Aelorea and Rhyven are absolutely amazing! Their dynamic is fire and they will keep you on your toes the entire time. This is the first in the series and I absolutely can’t wait to see where the author takes it!

What a ride. I went into this a little unsure in the first couple of chapters, but by chapter six I was completely hooked. The worldbuilding unfolds in such an intriguing way and the magic system is genuinely unlike anything I’ve read before in romantasy. I loved how different and original it felt. The main characters were so easy to root for, and while I personally always crave extra slow-burn tension, their dynamic kept me invested the whole time. And that ending… the cliffhanger had me immediately needing book two 👀📚✨

What a unique story with tons of conflict at every turn! This book did not give you a minute to breathe a sigh of relief as every conflict resolution was met with a more difficult situation. The characters were strong and there was a lot packed into this story. Once I started this book I found it really hard to put down. This didn’t end on a cliff hanger but this story is far from over and I’m super excited to see what happens next!

✨Now we figure out how to be broken together instead of broken apart✨
Beautiful quote from a beautifully written book. Highly recommend if you like an epic love story mixed in with fantasy. The MCs discover themselves together and find out they aren’t who they are supposed to be. From societies that taught them that pain was control and nothingness was purity, they discovered that love could conquer all.
