Addicts and Millionaires

Rate this book
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a wonder. Those that have it have been called annoying, frustrating, unorganized, lazy, stupid, distracted, emotional, scatterbrained, and impulsive. Kids dealing with it are far more likely to perform poorly in school. ADHD adults are more prone to jump from job to job. Many people who have it try to keep it a secret. Yet ADHD may just be responsible for many (most?) of the best-known innovations and ideas of the past century or so. In other words, if you consider yourself an ADHDer you’re in good company. In this book, Mark Patey, ADHD, explores lessons learned from interviews with addicts and millionaires, describes their struggles and successes, and explains what you can do to leverage the gift and minimize the curse that is ADHD. Mark Patey is a serial entrepreneur, an owner of multiple businesses, a world record-holding pilot, an internationally recognized speaker, the eccentric neighbor you’ve always wanted, and a card-carrying ADHDer.

When I heard Mark Patey speak recently, I knew I would want his book. As very successful entrepreneur with ADHD, he felt like he should give back by sharing his experience with other "ADDers" to give them encouragement and help them believe in themselves when so many around them seem to say they won't go far. His stories are captivating, and the ADHD reader will appreciate the visual busy-ness of the book for its distraction breaks.

This was not the best book I've ever read on ADHD, but Mark Patey's positive and can-do attitude are infectious and a good reminder to ADDers and those who love them that ADDers aren't broken, just different from neurotypicals in their areas of strength. It's easy, especially as parents of ADDers, to try to "fix" our kids and make them into something that they just aren't and will never be instead of appreciating their unique views and talents, as Mark Patey reminds us.

The book was self-published, and since I am an editor, it was hard to overlook the errors that would have been eliminated if he'd worked with an editor, but I tried to not be a book snob as I read since his message is really worthwhile--and besides, he was a really genuine, top-notch guy when we met him. Despite the errors, this worthwhile book with a different perspective on ADHD really deserves to be read.

This is the most hope-giving book I’ve ever read about ADHD. I bought it because I know Mark and Mike Patey personally; they are incredibly successful and driven guys, but are also very family-focused. I’m all those things except for the successful part. I’m planning to implement the things I just learned IMMEDIATELY.

The book was exactly as good as I expected it to be. Good stuff, Mark!

A must read for anyone with a child with ADHD. This gave me a lot of hope and understanding of my son.
My favorite part is in Chapter 9 when he says imagine a world where teachers and parents see an ADHD child as truly gifted.... "Then the teacher calls the parents in and says: I've been watching your child, I think he has a gift. It's called the ADHD gift. His mind most likely moves faster than others, and is capable of thinking in multiple directions at once. This is very exciting, but it can also be a challenge at times. Studies are now showing that kids with the gift can get bored and distracted easily because of their high intelligence. I believe your son is an Einstein". ❤️
