ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR WHEN THE GODDESS OF RETRIBUTION AND VENGEANCE IS ON THE JOB
Once again, Nemesis, Immortal Goddess of Retribution and Vengeance, has been called back to Earth, this time from a beach vacation on a lovely little water planet in Canis Major. Her job? As always, she is to work with her friends in the Pantheon League to serve justice and mete out punishment for evil transgressions against gods and humans. Born in the primordial past, Nemesis has seen it all. She’s done it all. And she is prepared for anything—except love.
Cy Bigelow has a target on his back. Harold Jensen, the world’s first multi-trillionaire and self-declared Chancellor of New America, wants to destroy Bigelow Enterprises and take its land and mineral rights for himself. But Cy hasn’t spent years dragging the company he inherited back from the brink of bankruptcy to give it up without a fight. And Jensen is ready to give him one.
As the connection between Nemesis and Cy deepens, she pledges to do everything in her power to protect him and those he loves. Even if it means going to war with her own immortal family.
In the first book of the new Pantheon League romantic suspense series set in a near-future dystopian world, join the gods and goddesses of the Pantheon League along with Cy Bigelow, Mat Cárdenas, Brooks Paxon, and Mason Cox—four best friends from southern Arizona—as they go head-to-head with the dark forces undermining American democracy and sowing discord around the world.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Set only a few years from now, this novel imagines a fascist new America where deportations, segregation and work camps have become reality. The intent seems to be: a reckoning with today’s politics and a warning of a potential future development. To me the execution opens with a substantial info dump and felt repetitive, weaving many historical parallels together with a full Greek pantheon of gods and their offspring in a way that felt sometimes more forced than cohesive.
By the 25% mark, the point is made—repeatedly. Personally I didn’t like the MMC’s lingering marriage (even if platonic). Romance-wise, it’s insta-love with no real tension and emotional depths.
Around the half something shifted, it got way better: faster, more engaging, and less didactic.
A solid 3-star read with potential, a set-up for the sequels to come, which will hopefully answer all those open questions.
