MOON MISSING! Marc Spector has been many things - an Avenger, a Fist of Khonshu, a Karnak Cowboy and now... KIDNAPPED?! But by whom? And why?! Don't they have any idea they've trapped MOON KNIGHT?!
I’m not familiar with Moon Knight beyond the MCU show, and I didn't even watch the entire thing. The most lore I can drop is that he wears white. This issue makes me want to dive head first into anything and everything Moon Knight. I don’t know what I read, what the background is, who the villains are, or who Zodiac is but this issue was fantastic. The art is amazing. If the rest of MacKay’s Moon Knight run is like this, I need to read it all.
im new to comics so i lowkey have no clue whats going on but i cant wait to read more. the panelling, art and story this far are stunning and pretty much everything i could ask for as a new comic reader
In 2026 I'm trying to read more monthly comics on the week of release. For the week of Feb 11th I decided to try Moon Knight once again. I say again as I tried jumping on at the start of another volume (after his "death") and it was still by Jed McKay. I stopped that one as the blood moon event happened but also because it felt like it was heavily built on an earlier story.
Things haven't really changed here as it's clear this is just another chapter on an ongoing saga. Credit it where it's due, this is sort of a good place to throw new readers in as Marc Spector is also a bit lost with him being held captive and drugged to the point he's essentially lost, so I n many ways I feel like I'm with him on the journey. The story is claustrophobic and deliberately disorientating. I also enjoyed the characterisation of the villains who get the spotlight particularly "mr smith" if that's their final identity who was a mix of Wilson Fisk and "Severance's" Milchik. I admit I have no idea who the villain at the end was but he had "arch nemesis" vibe and made quite the entrance. Which I think is part of the problem - this is still very much an ongoing story that is rewarded by the readers being fully up to date with the overall narrative.
Pramanik on art really impressed. It's very dark and moody but he does some really clever things with page layouts that makes scenes that are essentially conversations visually engaging. He uses a trick where centre panels are usually stacked on top of another panel that serves as the top and bottom eg some panels appear where a desk in the "lower" panel would be. There are other examples where panels interlace so they help the flow of the scene. It may initially go unnoticed but once spotted you realise how it aids in the storytelling. The colours are suitably dark (yet clear) too and help the book stand out in terms of art from the usual Marvel style. DC will be grabbing him for an "absolute" book at this rate.
Despite enjoying the book, I won't be getting the next issue. I already have digital copies of the first several volumes of MacKay's run and I think I'm doing the series a favour and myself by reading this properly from the start. Chances are it'll relaunch again by the time I catch up.
It is a shame it's so disjointed as it makes it hard to follow in trade collection as there are "fist of khonshu" "vengeance" and "moon knight" with multiple volumes. I imagine it would be like trying to read Bendis' Daredevil or Morrison's New X-Men run over multiple relaunches. I can understand the tactic for monthlies but they should just collect the trades under one banner. I guess they will in a few years. I suspect this is a run that will be remembered but not from this point alone. Those who have been following the title will no doubt enjoy a lot and the artwork is very clever in places.
Overall = 4/5 Writing = 4/5 Art = 4/5
Will I read the next issue? No
Did I need to read previous issues/series? Yes
Will I read previous issues? Yes, I'll catch up on previous volumes in trade collections
I will say that I was a tiny bit disappointed with Fist of Khonshu before this, not by a lot but it definitely felt like MacKay was starting to run out of steam as that book, while it still had its shining moments like the Issue set in Marc's birthday, and told from Deatrice's POV, but overall it did feel like MacKay's excellent character work was starting to wane just a bit.
But I am happy to report that this issue has put my worries to rest as this has got to be one of the strongest Issues out of the entirety of MacKay's run so far, it’s full of intrigue with a great premise and some damn good moments towards the end especially. This is the kind of Issue that just celebrates everything that came before while also setting up an exciting new path forward for the character.
That being said, I hate that Marvel still decided to renumber the book when there was no need to, it’s a great issue yes, but I don’t know if it’s a good FIRST issue for a series. This is a book that you need context from the rest of MacKay's run to fully get, and I don’t think it’s a good starting point for anyone who hasn’t been reading it monthly like me and it also saddens me that this probably won’t even make it past Issue #15 before Marvel decide: "lol, let’s relaunch again". Srsly, someone needs to do an intervention on that company and their weird addiction for relaunching their books.
In any case, damn solid Issue, MacKay is so back and I can’t wait to see where he takes the character next, as he seems to be taking some elements from the Jeff Lemire run, and a take on that particular run from MacKay's writing style sounds like heaven to me.
That was an interesting first issue. I haven’t read Moon Knight since Jed MacKay’s first run and I think I may need a refresher. Something has changed since the last time I saw Marc. Hmm…
Encore un faux numéro 1 de Marvel j'en peux plus, le pire c'est les avis positifs du style "je sais pas ce que je lis mais c'est vraiment super parce que c'est mon personnage préféré" 🤓
