The big final battle is a very small portion of this book. It well drawn and the colors were terrific. The rest of this book deals with the aftermath of not only the recent events but Peter's life in general. The letter MJ writes to Peter is touching and emotional and the final page that leaves it to the reader to fill in the gaps was beautiful. I was left wanting more but also enjoy the way this ends on a more human note.
I have been following this mini-series since it started releasing back in October and those first three Issues are not only some of JMS's strongest stuff he’s ever written, but also one of the few times in recent memory where Peter and MJ feel like actual characters who are allowed to show emotions. And then these last two issues come in and show off the problem with cramming everything into a miniseries.
The resolution to the weird mystic crap with Evangeline is… well, really bad and clearly rushed, it just happens. I’m not joking, there’s an attempt at an emotional moment with Spidey but it falls flat by this mini being set around the Lee/Romita Sr. era and the portal/invasion is just… closed. Just like that. All the threats and foreshadowing from the previous issues just… vanished, like that. Like a fart in the wind.
My big issue here stems from the Peter/MJ stuff. I knew that there was gonna be something that would happen to split them up because, again, miniseries set in the past of the Marvel Universe; but the way it’s done here is just… not necessarily bad, but heartbreaking, but not in a good way. It is a beautiful moment yes, but it makes me mad that it’s framed in this idea that "maybe Peter and MJ may get together" but you just know Marvel Editorial will never let it happen because of weird, outdated beliefs. I will say it at least gives MJ's character some development as it at least shows her having some mental strength of her own.
I’m still happy to have spent my money on this instead of the ongoing TASM series. Even if I came out disappointed after a really strong start.
Kind of a weak ending but it was a great series. I had a lot of fun with this self-contained story. We need more comics like this. Nice and grounded story. Simplicity goes a long way. For me, at least, that's true.
