Hi readers As co-author of this book, I'd like to let you know that this book has been completely revised from the original edition published in 2004. All reviews prior to 2020 relate to this first edition. I hope you give the second edition a look - it's much improved, up to date and I'm really proud of this book! Thanks and happy reading. Elly Robinson
Short manageable book mainly for parents trying to survive this period. It told me a lot of things I didn’t know about the Australian system so that was helpful especially alternatives to a year 12 in case the worst case scenario happens. Particularly helpful to me was the section on how to support them particularly when they are stuck in negative self talk and how to manage stress (time management etc) This book will not teach your kid how to pass the exams with top marks but it made me feel slightly more reassured and put a lot of things in context like year 12 is not the be all and end all and shock, that there are too many lawyers in Australia now - the law degree has now become the basic first degree of choice (as a law graduate I am disconcerted by this). But the point being year 12 is just a foot in the door for university which 30% drop out of after a year anyway.
This is a useful resource for parents and kids alike. Interspersed with helpful resources, it also manages to "make it real" by speaking with parents of Year 12 students and the students themselves who give realistic feedback about their experiences, from different perspectives. Worth a read indeed if you are launching yourself into the Year 12 experience, especially for first timers.
Basically things you learn in health class and common sense, for example having good sleep schedules, study harder not smarter etc... not really worth a read unless you struggle to grasp basic ideas like you should be sleeping 8 hours per night.
