To the people of Tallow, Maine, Damien Ashford is just a reclusive mechanic with a shop on the edge of town.
But to those who dwell in the woods, he is the Alpha of the Ashen Ones, heir to a blood-soaked Wolf Throne.
When Jazz Snow brings her broken-down truck to his shop, she expects a repair bill, not a primal bond that threatens to tear her world apart. After one night of forbidden passion, Damien does the unthinkable.
He rejects her.
Casting her out to save her from himself—and from the enemies already closing in—he thought he was protecting a human. He was wrong.
Jazz isn’t just another customer. She is the daughter of a rival pack. As war rages for the Wolf Throne, desire and destiny collide, and Damien and Jazz must choose between the bond they were never meant to share and a fate written in blood.
An adult fantasy romance for fans of romantasy, werewolves, fated mates, rejected mates and forbidden romance. Content Strong language and sexual content.
Someone was listening when we said we needed a break from the teen FMCs! Meet Jazz, a 24 year old librarian - yes, she has a job. And a car. And a life that exists before the craziness that ensues after meeting Damien, our dark, broody and reclusive MMC.
The chemistry between them is electric. They both instantly feel the pull of their fated bond but life is rarely so simple and both Jazz and Damien must quickly decide what they value more: their love for each other or the peace of their town. They cannot have both. Not without a lot of bloodshed, anyway.
Watching Jazz's character development in this book is a joy; although she's always had a fire in her, she's been conditioned to believe that safe is good and that her little life is all she needs. Over the course of the book, she undergoes a metamorphosis into a strong, self-assured and outspoken woman, unafraid to put people in their place and share her point of view. I'm so excited to see her in book two as I just know she's going to become even more feisty and dominant, taking her place as it's meant to be in the world.
Damien is an MMC we really root for. He has good reason for his reluctance to engage in new relationships as he carries a heavy responsibility as the Alpha of his pack. However, in no time at all, he's ready to burn it all down for Jazz and
I 👏🏻 love 👏🏻 that 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 her.
Together, they are a formidable team that will stop at nothing to do what is right to protect the innocent and those they love.
The action in this book is intense. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, you're knocked sideways by something else. You can feel the tension ramping up in the book and I swear that I didn't even breathe for the last 15% - it's like I was in a trance, frantically reading every page because I just HAD to know how it was all going to play out.
Yeah, it's safe to say I need book 2. Immediately.
The concept of this book was there but I was confused as to why this alliance of wolves thought fated mates from different packs was illegal and would "dilute the alpha bloodline". Most books with wolf shifters have some sort of god that blesses the fated mate bond and its usually unheard of to reject the bond. (Though there are tons of rejected mate books out there.) I did like that despite the backlash the couple ultimately came fight the bond and chose to fight to be together. I felt karma was dealt to the other alphas during the Alphas Gambit and the fight that insured after so it made up for my confusion in the beginning. Overall it was an interesting take on wolf shifters and fated mates.
This was a quick & fast paced read for me. I’m such a sucker for shifter romance and I loved the instant attraction that Jazz and Damien have from the moment they see each other. The story was fun to read and I loved Jazz as a FMC. The timeline does get a little weird towards the end. I found myself a little confused. However, I enjoyed the story overall.
Read if you like… Fated mates Mate rejection Small town vibes Forbidden love Fight for the throne
I thought the story was good. I also liked that the FMC wasn't really afraid of anything. But unfortunately, that's where the good ends for me.
I felt that this story did not have any initial character development nor did it have any actual world building. It seemed that things moved way too quickly. For example, the FMC grew up human and didn't know about the wolf world. Then within a page of learning about wolves, she accepted everything right away and moved on.
This book is advertised as enemies to lovers, but that is not the case. These two people met, immediately knew they were mates, and became intimate all within the first 3 chapters! They were never enemies. Their families were from different wolf packs, but the characters never were.
I didn't like that answers for behaviors/actions were given before they even happened. For example, the MMC was going to have to pretend not to like the FMC for a time, but told her exactly that before the moments even happened. I actually like when an MMC is morally grey and I get mad at them, just to have their actions explained later in the book. Let me be mad at the MMC for a while!
My biggest frustration with this book was the timeline and things that happened did not align and were completely confusing! For example, the morning of the gambit challenge, there were multiple chapters that covered what happened between the main characters that morning. One chapter said the MMC woke up and snuck out of the house while the FMC was still sleeping. He met his 2nd outside with coffee and left. The very next chapter said the 2 characters woke up, were intimate with each other, and then he left. The next chapter after that said the MMC taught the FMC how to kill an alpha and then he left. The next chapter had a different variation of what happened. This left me extremely confused, wondering what actually happened and what did not happen! I felt like I was reading a story of Groundhogs Day and you had to try to figure out what was real.
I do like books that give multiple POVs during battle scenes. This book attempted to do that. However, the battle would be told by one person's view all the way to the end of the battle - and the good guys won. Then the next chapter would go to a different person's POV and retell the battle all over again. AND there were changes to the story through that. For example, the characters would be together killing the final bad guy, but how it happened changes from one chapter to the next.
Overall, I liked the story and that was promising, but it fell completely flat. It was confusing to follow, frustrating a lot of the time, did not have much world building or character development, and it took all my will power to not dnf this book.

Having been to Maine, and having a heart for all things paranormal, I really wanted this book to be my first book of the year, and so it was. Sophie, the author, has been really candid about being a debut author. In fact, she was kind enough to give me the updated/proofed copy asap.
This is my review of the updated version.
Sophie has somehow taken the best bits of Twilight (in case there's any clarification needed, I'm team werewolf) and implemented them in Maine. Specifically in a town called Tallow, which was really asking me to suspend my disbelief, but thank you to Stephen King for making Maine a veritable smorgasbord of all things weird and horrific. It wasn't a long walk, mentally speaking, to werewolves.
I enjoyed Jazz, but I'll be honest, I enjoyed Damien more. It's like Sophie took the ideal book boyfriend that we've all got in mind and just made him exist, somehow. And it got quite hot and heavy, if I'm being honest.
The story was solid! The plot was quite intricate, and the romance....well, the romance was delicious. But not without its tinge of sorrow and tension.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a fresh paranormal werewolf shifter romance, with a focus on worldbuilding, character development, and a romance that jumps at you from the first page.
If you’re craving fated mates, forbidden love, and a powerful FMC discovering who she truly is, stop what you’re doing. This book needs to be at the top of your TBR immediately.
Let’s start with Damien. He’s the kind of gorgeous, duty-bound gentleman who carries the weight of a throne on his shoulders. From Jazz’s POV, you might want to shake him once or twice (okay, maybe more), but trust me, his heart is absolutely in the right place. He’ll do anything to protect his crown… and his mate. The tension? Delicious. The restraint? Painful in the best way.
And then there’s Jazz. Our quietly defiant librarian FMC who thought she was completely human. until her entire reality gets turned upside down. Watching her journey from reserved and unsure to a full-blown, take-no-prisoners badass is incredibly satisfying. Her growth feels earned, empowering, and honestly inspiring.
This book is such an easy, addictive read. It’s perfect if you’re between series, stuck in a reading slump, or just want a standalone that delivers on romance, intrigue, and character development without overwhelming you. I was recommending it to people before I even finished it, that’s how confident I was.
I never ever post reviews like this - if you knew my dislike of atlas six you’d know I base every star off of that… and I’m pretty sure I gave that two..
I honestly don’t know why I pushed myself to finish this. The multiple different versions of ending chapters was a killer - I know it’s an uncorrected proof but you would expect there to be just one plot not 4. That really really let it down for me. I wanted to like it but when these multiple version chapters were kept in it was like why should I care enough to be nicer when you haven’t cared for your proof.
The first half was okay, I did nearly quit as soon as they banged in the first few chapters and she fell asleep because it was so ridiculous. But I really wanted this to be good because the premise was great... so I pushed through for the vibes…
The good thing is that this was the first book I read this year. It can only get better.
I spent the first 65% of this book so excited for it! The story was so good cohesive and addictive then around the 70% mark it's like the rest of the chapters till the epilogue had multiple set of 6ish chapters each describing the same scene or story development different and the. Going back and doing it differently. It was almost as if they couldn't decide what direction to take the story or how they actually wanted the end fight to look so instead of making a decision spent the time giving you every option which is confusing to say the least. However Damien and Jazz are loveable relatable characters with amazing chemistry. The fight scenes are bad ass and the love story is swoon worthy. Was it a fun time yes would I read it again no.

I hadn’t read a novel that involved werewolves since I read The Twilight series. I must say I’m back on to my fantasy world involving Shifters and werewolves thanks to this novel. I am glad that this wasn’t a slow book. Momentum was built early on and it kept it throughout. Some of the timelines did throw me off but it didn’t last long. Also, I must say I was shocked at the quickness of intimacy between the main characters. I wish that there had been more backstory pertaining to the characters and their various packs. I was not happy with the fact that the FMC had no clue of what she was but I did like that she didn’t deny or reject it.
Overall, there were some things that can be fixed but it’s still a good read in my opinion.

I usually do not rate books this low but unfortunately this one landed there. After a lot of careful thought and consideration this is my honest opinion of the book. It was an okay read for me. And I feel like it has a lot of promise. I liked the first half of it despite conflicting timelines but then towards the end of it things got really confusing for me because of the time frame, the way things jumped around, and things seemed to be a little repetitive in the last several chapters. Other than that it's not that bad of a book but just not what I was expecting. I was really hoping for a nice ending but the last bit of the book really did not line up for me. I appreciate the author for giving me a copy of this and allowing me to read it. All opinions are my own and freely expressed.
This book completely pulled me in from the start. I’ve been craving a good shifter romance, and I’m so glad I picked this one up it’s been on my TBR for a while…..
It really has a little bit of everything — emotion, growth, tension, and heart. Watching the FMC grow throughout the story was one of my favorite parts. She goes through so much, learns hard truths, feels everything deeply… and instead of losing herself, she becomes stronger while still staying true to who she is. I loved that.
And the MMC? So good. Protective, steady, encouraging, Strong, and exactly what she needed.
The writing was quick, fast-paced, and easy to get lost in, and that ending was a beautiful wrapped up present. It took me less than a day to finish it. It was that good.
Great shifter read! This story follows a human librarian named Jazz Snow and local mechanic Damien. Damien is the next in line for the wolf throne whose path changes when Jazz walks into his shop to fix her truck. Feeling an intense bond and connection immediately, the two cannot stay away from each other. Jazz was raised human not realizing shifters were real or that she was also one as well. This is a fated mate and forbidden romance that keeps the readers on the edge of their seat. If you like shifter romantasy, I would highly recommend.
giving 1 star cause I have to give something to write a review otherwise it would be 0. The writing style is hard to grasp - seemingly written in past tense the whole time so for me this was just more annoying than entertaining to read. The romance happens instantly - I'm not a fan of insta-love or maybe I read too many enemies to lovers but there should be more angst and tension especially in those opening chapters. The word "mate" was thrown around within the first 13 pages (also exactly when I dnf'd) and for this being advertised as an enemies to lovers trope I'm wondering where?
Dnf’d at 34 pages unfortunately. The cover is beautiful- that and the premise totally drew me in. But the writing is woefully lacking. Lost connections, inconsistent storyline, lack of depth.
Eg: One minute he says I’m going to hunt her down, then the next day he says “I knew you’d come and I’ve been waiting”…he wants to be inconspicuous so he takes a chopper…(?)…he makes a reservation for dinner…at a dive bar…& many many more unfortunately.

Content Strong language and sexual content ❤️ Review - This was such a brilliantly written novel. From the very first page I was drawn into the story along with the characters and didn't stop reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. There was everything that I could want in a fantasy novel and more. The author's writing is so good that sometimes I forgot that I was reading and I was in the story with the characters. Overall, a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers. I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the author Sophie L. Hart for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
The storyline was good, but the lack of editing made the book frustrating and hard to get through at times. The lack of editing was missing punctuation, to repeated sentences to retelling of parts of the storyline that then changed with each version. With some serious cleanup the story could be improved to at least a 4 star read.
I made the decision to DNF around 30% mostly due to the FMC being a 24 year woman who was living fully on her own arguing with her parents over a man and then sneaking out of her own apartment to meet said man.
Also, the insta lust paired with immediate "break up" was just too much whiplash.
This was a great story that immerses you into the wolf shifter kingdom. And a tale of new love growing to overcome a myriad of challenges. The story grabs you from the start and has you cheering for the hero and heroine as they find their strength and build a bond that can’t be broken.
I dnf’d it after 2 chapters. Throwing around the word “mate” in the first couple pages. Damien’s thinking doesn’t feel right as an alpha’s son. One who will inherit everything. So no, Im unable to continue
This is a romantasy with werewolves, fated mates, and forbidden romance. A strong FMC discovers herself on the journey of the werewolf war about borders. There is plenty of action and spice.
Hitting hot and heavy right out of the gate, my jaw dropped with how quick we ran into spice. It was great. The rest of the story felt steady, I wanted to feel more ups and downs. The ending was solid, satisfying. But I starting to lose it with how many times someone “corrected” someone else. Overall I enjoyed it!
