A heartfelt story about second chances and finding your way back home
Hockey captain Silas Harrison has built his life around protecting what matters his young sister Aubrey, his team, and his heart. But when Oakley returns to Steele Valley with a broken ankle, everything changes. Despite years apart, Silas never stopped loving her.
Oakley didn't plan on returning to her hometown or reconnecting with the man she left behind. Yet as she rebuilds her life, she can't ignore the quiet strength and unwavering support Silas offers. Even as shadows from the past threaten their newfound peace.
When danger arrives at their doorstep, Silas and Oakley must decide if they're ready to trust again. In hockey and in life, sometimes the most meaningful moments come during the second shift.
Set in the same world as the beloved Havenwood series but with a steamier touch, Second Shift brings together found family, hockey culture, and the enduring power of love.
"We had to wait for our second shift, but the ice still shines the same."
The book starts out 5 years before the present and it had me crying in the first chapter where Silas and Oakley go their separate ways. Fast forward and both of their lives are kind of spiraling.
When their paths cross again you can feel how much they still care for one another. The one that steals the whole book is Silas’s little sister Aubrey, she is a little firecracker.
Can Oakley and Silas get back together and build what they thought the would never happen?
Second chance Small town Hockey Single “parent” Found family
This is a second chance romance of Silas & Oakley Kate.
The book gives off the vibe that Oakley and Silas belongs together and I couldn't agree more.
This story has a soft touch that gives you insight on how Silas and Oakley felt for each other, how even after years apart their love for each other never disappeared.
And the addition of Aubrey? Perfection. That final piece that makes everything click and turns a love story into a family story.
Overall it's a good read if you into something cute and full of heart.
⚠️ Please check your trigger warnings before diving in.
After Silas lands the hockey contract of his dreams, everything should be perfect. Instead, Oakley Kate makes the heartbreaking decision not to follow him. She’s drowning in grief after a miscarriage, and the weight of that loss changes everything between them. My heart absolutely broke for Silas , for both of them, really. Their pain felt raw and very real.
Fast forward five years, and Silas has taken full custody of his nine-year-old sister, Aubrey. He’s exhausted, overwhelmed, and constantly on edge. He’s trying to balance being a professional hockey player with being a full-time guardian. The pressure is showing, in his lack of sleep, in his game, and in the way he obsessively checks doors, alarms, and cameras. Aubrey’s safety is his entire world.
When Oakley Kate returns home after injuring her ankle and quitting her job, she’s also trying to figure out her next steps. Staying with her mom brings her back into Silas and Aubrey’s orbit. Despite everything, Silas and Oakley have stayed in touch over the years. They never stopped loving each other, they just learned how to exist as “friends.”
But proximity changes things.
As Silas struggles to manage everything on his own, Oakley steps in to help with Aubrey. Watching them slowly fall back into partnership , not just romantically but as a team, was beautiful and emotional. The chemistry is still there, simmering beneath years of hurt and longing.
And Aubrey? She completely steals the show. She’s sassy, lovable, hockey-obsessed, and adds so much heart to this story. I adored her.
With a lingering threat in the background and unresolved heartbreak between them, the tension never truly fades. The question becomes: can they overcome the past, face the danger ahead, and finally choose each other again?
This book is packed with emotion, second chances, family bonds, and suspense. A powerful, heartfelt read that kept me turning pages late into the night.
This was a new author for me, and I enjoyed the writing style—it was easy to read and engaging. I liked that from the start, neither Silas nor Oakley had ever really moved on. Their story focused more on Oakley coming to terms with her past, while Silas was steady and patient, wanting nothing more than to be with her.
I loved seeing them reconnect after so many years, especially the sweet moments with Silas’s baby sister. The family and friendship dynamics were a highlight, particularly Oakley’s brother and how protective he was of them both. I just wish we got more details about their past, as it felt like there were some missing pieces. Overall, a solid second-chance romance.
Thank you to The Author Agency & EM. Chandler for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
spice: 🌶️
This second-chancr hockey romance is filled with quiet longing and unresolved emotions. Five years after a breakup, Silas and his former fiance Oakley are thrown back into each other's lives. Silias is protective over a little girl who calls him Buba, and when Oakley enters he feels the same pull. Silias has spent the last few years doing things on his own, including taken care of Aubs. His family and friends are pushing him to ask his ex.
Oakley reenters his life injured and at a crossroads, the tension between them is immediate and rooted with pain. yet the love and care between them has never truly left. it shows through their communication and small, meaningful moments. The connection feels mature, earned, and emotional.
It delivers on healing, second chances and found families.
3.5⭐️ I really enjoyed this book!! The plot was so different from other second chance romances which felt like a bit of fresh air. There were moments where I felt like I was thrown into the middle of a series that left me a little confused and I wish we had seen more of Oakley and Silas before they broke up. The ending felt a little rushed and out of nowhere but overall I had a great time reading this one!!!
Second Shift wrecked me in the softest, warmest way and then tucked me back together like I belonged there all along. EM Chandler took second chances, cracked them open, and filled them with heart, grit, hockey sweat, and the kind of love that doesn’t shout but shows up every single time.
Silas Harrison is that quiet, steady kind of book boyfriend who doesn’t need grand speeches because his actions are the whole love language. Hockey captain. Guardian of his sister. Protector by instinct. And the way he loves Oakley? Unfinished, patient, never erased by time. You feel it in every glance, every choice, every moment he gives her space while still standing close enough to catch her if she falls. Swoon doesn’t even cover it 🖤
Oakley coming back to Steele Valley with a broken ankle and a bruised soul felt so real. She’s not magically fixed. She’s rebuilding, limping forward, figuring out who she is now. Watching her rediscover herself while slowly, carefully reconnecting with Silas was pure emotional satisfaction. No rushing. No easy answers. Just two people learning how to trust again.
And Aubrey. Sweet, fierce Aubrey. My heart belongs to her. Seeing Oakley, Silas, and Aubrey grow into the family they all desperately needed had me blinking back tears. Found family hits different when it’s earned, and this one was earned in late nights, shared meals, quiet support, and love that doesn’t demand anything in return 🏒✨
The danger, the past creeping back in, the way Silas steps up without hesitation? Perfection. The hockey world felt lived in, gritty, familiar, and the steam? Oh it’s there. Mature, earned, and deliciously intense without overshadowing the heart.
This book felt like coming home after being gone too long. Same ice. Same shine. Just stronger people standing on it.
Second Shift is about timing, forgiveness, and the kind of love that waits for you when you’re finally ready. I adored every page and didn’t want to leave Steele Valley when it was over. Absolute must read. 💙
The story starts off strong. E.M. Chandler does a good job setting up the story in a way that immediately pulls you in and makes you curious about where it’s going.
However, the story feels like it’s missing a lot of key pieces. I really wish we had gotten more of Silas and Oakley before their breakup, because it often feels like we’re jumping from scene to scene with noticeable gaps. At times, it genuinely felt like there might be another book that comes before this one. The characters react very strongly to certain things, but we’re never fully shown the root of what triggered those reactions, which makes it hard to fully connect to them.
I didn’t feel a strong emotional pull overall. The heartbreak comes more from the idea of what Silas and Oakley went through, something truly unimaginable, rather than from the way it’s explored on the page. Because they never fully discuss the tragedy or process it together, it’s difficult to connect their emotions to what happened or to feel the weight of it as a reader. I feel bad saying that because I know that this event that occurred is very close to the authors heart. And I want to state that this is my opinion on what I felt and what I got from the book. I don’t want to diminish or lessen what Silas and Oakley (or anyone else who has had to face something so heartbreaking) went through.
That said, I did enjoy reading about Silas, Oakley, and Aubrey cohabitating and forming a family together. Those moments were sweet and felt earned, like something that had been a long time coming.
Overall, it’s a story with a solid setup and some nice moments, but it left me wanting more context, depth, and continuity to really feel invested.

Silas Harrison loves playing hockey almost more than anything but when he must take in his younger sister, Aubrey, he begins to struggle with balancing everything. He knows he is letting his team down but also doesn't want to burden anyone else with helping to take care of Aubrey.
Oakley Slater loved Silas since they were young but when she felt like she could no longer give him what he wanted she broke up with him and left town. Now she has returned to Steele Valley with a broken ankle and broken dreams and is not sure what she wants to do next.
When Oakley decides to help Silas with Harrison she wonders if she could have a life with him after all but when someone from Silas's past returns will he be able to keep everyone safe?
It was clear right from the beginning that neither Silas or Oakley had gotten over the two of them and it was more about Oakley coming to terms with the past and Silas just wanted to be with Oakley and didn't expect anything else. Once Oakley was able to work through her issues everything was clear sailing.
I felt like the individual from Silas's past was a brief distraction and thought the way it was dealt with was a bit of a let down. There was a "threat" and then it was gone.
I liked the way all of Silas's teammates and coaches were really there for him and helped him with Aubrey until a real solution could be found. I'd like to see a little more on some of these characters in the future. 3.5 Stars- Rebecca
Thank you to E.M. Chandler for letting me read this book!
I absolutely loved this story. One of my favorite parts was the adult communication between Oakley and Silas. Their relationship felt realistic, emotional, and so heartfelt.
Oakley and Silas loved each other deeply, until one day Oakley left Steele Valley to pursue her dreams. Years later, she returns home with her family, a broken ankle, and the one person she never truly forgot—Silas.
Silas Harrison, the hockey captain, has built his life around protecting what matters most: his younger sister Aubrey, his team, and his heart. But when Oakley comes back into his life, everything shifts. Despite the time apart, Silas never stopped loving her, and he’s determined to prove that she still has a place beside him.
Oakley is hesitant and afraid to open her heart again, but Silas never stops showing up for her. His steady love and patience made their second chance romance so special.
This book was such a beautiful story about two people who lost their way, spent years apart, found friendship again, and ultimately came back together stronger than ever. A heartfelt and emotional second chance romance that I truly enjoyed.
Second Shift is a high-voltage, emotionally charged second-chance hockey romance that hits hard from page one and never lets up.
EM Chandler does not ease into her new Stelle Valley Voltage series—she comes in full force, and I loved every second of it. Second Shift surrounds you with a flurry of emotions: swoony moments, quiet heart-tugging scenes, and genuine tear-jerkers that come from two people who once meant everything to each other and are now facing the possibility of a second chance that won’t come easily. This is a hard-fought love story, layered with pain, history, and hope.
Silas, the captain of the hockey team, is a protector in every sense of the word—of his team, of his heart, and especially of his young sister, Aubrey, who suddenly becomes his responsibility. Then Oakley returns to Stelle Valley, limping in more ways than one with a broken ankle and a past she never planned to face again. She’s the woman who left him years ago, and now she’s back in the town—and the life—she once walked away from. As old shadows rise and unresolved wounds resurface, Silas becomes Oakley’s steady strength, but the question lingers: is this finally their time, or are some loves too scarred to survive?
What makes this story shine is that it’s not just about Oakley and Silas—it’s also about the growing family bond between Silas, Oakley, and Aubrey, which adds so much warmth and depth to the romance. Add in the wider hockey family, and this series starter feels rich, emotional, and full of promise. Second Shift is a powerful opening to the Stelle Valley Voltage series, and I cannot wait to see what EM Chandler delivers next. 💙🏒✨
*4,5 stars* This was my first read by the author and definitely won't be my last one as I loved the story from beginning until end. It was such a rollercoaster of emotions but also held hope for an old romance to still make it to the end. I truly liked the chemistry and relationship between Silas & Oakley throughout the story and how it progressed. A great beginning to this series!
When Oakley left her home town and Silas behind, she didn't expect to return a few years later. Not really know what to do next but when knowing someone she loves needs help, she's determined to make sure they are okay. Silas was heartbroken when Oakley left. Even though they've kept in touch, it hasn't been the same. When he needs to take on custody of his little sister, everything seems to fail miserably but he's trying to hold on. As Oakley finds out what is happening, she offers her help but being back in each other's life full time is harder than it seems. While they are adjusting to the new life, a threat looms over them but Silas will do whatever it takes to keep his family safe. Through it all, both still have feelings for each other. Will everything be okay in end? And will they give their relationship another chance?...
✨Tropes✨ 🏒Second Chance Romance 🔥Single Parent/Guardian Romance 🏒Sports Romance (Hockey) 🔥Protective Hero 🏒Grumpy/Sunshine (with child) 🔥Caretaker Hero 🏒Childhood Friends to Lovers 🔥Found Family 🏒Nicknames 🔥Slow Burn Reunion ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🌶️🌶️ I loved this second chance hockey read. The characters were written beautifully. From Silas and Oakley to the supportive friends and family they have. Silas, the hockey captain and the big brother taking on the role of parent, was floundering with all of the responsibilities thrown at him but would refuse help. Then Oakley hobbled back into his life. Oakley left Silas once because she didn't want what she thought he did. Now things are different. With what she wanted. With Silas. I love second chance romance and I thought the author did a great job of balancing spice with relationship development. I'll admit that I was ready to do something to Brian and I know he's fictional and it's weird. This story really brings the issues of women's healthcare and trauma to the front. The author did a wonderful job describing those issues respectfully. This will probably be a re-read for when I want a second chance romance with found family, a strong protective alpha, and a splash of danger.
First I have to say this is my first book by EM Chandler and I'm happy to report she has gained a new reader. I'm now going to be checking out her backlist. I was hooked right from the beginning of this book. My heart was crushed a little at first, but man the emotional depth of these characters. A beautiful second chance romance between childhood sweethearts. Then you have Silas single guardian of his younger sister. Oh my gosh, that just melted my heart. Aubrey is a little spitfire and I loved her to pieces. Silas' teammates awesome especially Rooks. Such a great cast of characters. Trust me when I say I couldn't put this book down I truly mean it. Silas, Oakley, and Aubrey have stolen my heart. Silas is prime book boyfriend material. He is so protective of those he loves. Silas and Oakley fit together like puzzle pieces, they truly complete each other. Everything that life has thrown at them they so deserve all the happiness and are so worthy of a beautiful HEA. This is a must read! This is the first book in the series and absolutely can't wait for more from this series!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a slow burn but I enjoyed the pace.
It was well written and flowed making it easy to read. The chapters were relatively short too which I liked.
The characters were easy to connect with , I felt everything they were going through, especially Oakley Kate. I think everyone can relate to a break up in a relationship and you really get the emotions of that throughout the story.
While there were 2 main characters the peripheral characters were included a lot in the story which was nice. It helped the group family dynamic and like they were all main characters in the story not just in the background.
There was drama and it wasn't quite what I was expecting but it did keep me hooked. I had to find out how it ended and if it would be as I wanted it to be.....no spoilers here, go read it I do recommend it if you enjoy a slow burn romance or a sports romance.
I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it's released! 😍
Second Shift- it completely wrecked me… in the softest, warmest way, and then put me back together. Chandler took second chances, cracked them open, and filled them with a love that doesn’t shout-it just shows up, every single time.
Silas Harrison is the kind of quiet, steady book boyfriend whose actions say it all. Hockey captain. Sister’s protector. Guardian by instinct. And the way he loves Oakley? Patient, unfinished, never erased by time. You feel it in every glance, every moment he gives her space while still being close enough to catch her if she falls.
Oakley coming back to Steele Valley with a broken ankle and a bruised soul felt so real. She’s not magically fixed-she’s rebuilding, figuring out who she is now. Watching her slowly, carefully reconnect with Silas was pure emotional satisfaction. No rushing. No easy answers. Just two people learning how to trust again.
And Aubrey… sweet, fierce Aubrey. My heart belongs to her. Seeing Oakley, Silas, and Aubrey grow into the family they all desperately needed had me blinking back tears. Found family hits different when it’s earned, and this one? Totally earned-in late nights, shared meals, quiet support, and love that asks for nothing in return 🏒✨
The tension, the past creeping back in, Silas stepping up without hesitation? Perfection. The hockey world feels lived-in, gritty, familiar. And the steam? Oh… it’s there.
Second Shift is about timing, forgiveness, and the kind of love that waits for you until you’re ready. I adored every single page.
EM Chandler is a new to me author and wow, what a great book to start with! I’m a sucker for hockey romance and throw in found family AND brother best friend and I’m sold.
Silas is the greenest of flags there is! This man is there for his little sister and now raising her. He lost the love of his life when she walked away because she decided they didn’t want that same things. Now he is raising a 9 year old little girl on his own. But when Oakley Kate pops back up, he can’t help but be there for her too. The way this man shows up for his girls, it’s unmatched.
Oakley Kate, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know if I was going to like her when she left Silas in the beginning. But as the her story unfolded I felt for her. She needed to find herself and the nice brought her back right where she belonged, to Silas.
This is a rollercoaster of a ride when it comes to everything that happens. Whew, just buckle up and get ready. But also the love, the joy, and character development was beautiful.
Second Shift is hockey captain Silas Harrison and Oakley Skater’s second chance at love story. It’s the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last because this heartfelt journey wrecked me in the best possible way before healing me. Silas lives for hockey and when circumstances have him taking in his younger sister Aubrey he struggles with his career and everyday living. He knows he is struggling but he will never ask for help with his sister or his team and that’s where the problems start. Oakley walked away from Silas years ago but she has never stopped loving him and now she is back home nursing a broken ankle and broken dreams. So has fate given them another chance……… I loved this story, I fell hard and fast for the characters and I loved the camaraderie Silas had with his teammates. This is a beautifully written journey that touched me on so many levels.
*I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review!*
This was such a sweet book about rebuilding a family after a life altering tragedy. **TW: Miscarriage** I unfortunately know this tragedy well, having suffered 4 myself, so I truly appreciate the way it was represented, in that I could connect with Oakley in a way that allowed me to feel without being overcome. I loved that Silas and Oakley were able to build upon the foundation they already had and despite the years apart, come back together stronger and just as in love. They had issues to work through both together and individually, and it was done with full support and guidance from the other in a way that felt authentic. My favorite character was Aubrey though, the sass and feistiness in her... man, this girl will go places and the world better be ready!
This is a new author to me, but I will certainly be looking for her work in the future. This is the first in a series, and this is Silas and Oakley’s story. Silas is guardian to his younger sister, and is captain of the hockey team, while Oakley is his childhood sweetheart, until they were town apart. Now Oakley is back in her hometown bruised and with a broken ankle, intent of rebuilding her life. Will Silas and Oakley get a second chance at love? This is a well written slow burn, emotional roller coaster, with found family, friendships, tension, angst, danger, intrigue, childhood friends / lovers, grumpy / sunshine, trust, soulmates, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and heartfelt, hockey romance. I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.
So good! What a wild ride! This is a new author for me, and I am so glad I found this novel! I love a good second chance romance and throw in a hockey theme and you can count me in. From the first chapter this novel sucked me in and held on tight. Once I started reading I didn't want to put this novel down. I was on the edge of my seat reading guessing what was coming next. I loved Oakley and Silas's story. I loved Silas and his dedication to his sister and the way he was there for Oakley. I loved their chemistry. I loved watching Oakley's walls and defenses come down and open her heart to Silas and Aubrey. So so good! What a wild ride! I can hardly wait to see what this author has coming next. So so good!
This book had me all over the place, all the emotions, tears, frustration, and smiles. My heart took a beating, but it is now full.
Silas is laser focused on hockey, making the NHL, and succeeding. He thought his dreams and Oakley’s dreams were the same. But they weren’t.
Oakley Kate returning to Steele Valley bruised, and a broken ankle. She doesn’t realize the move is good for her soul, time to rediscover herself and connect with Aubrey and Silas was the balm she needed. The past shows up, danger lingers, will Silas step up?
The second chance given to Oakley and Silas follows learning to forgive, and realizing that you had the right person at the wrong time.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
💜 Second chance 🖤 Brother’s best friend 💜Hockey romance 🖤 Found family
This book starts with Oakley and Silas breaking up then jumps to 5 years later. They both changed but their feelings for each other never went away. Aubrey is Silas’s little sister whom he is now responsible for but has trouble accepting help from other people. The way his teammates, best friends and even Oakley’s mom are always trying to help and pushing him to accept help and then finally accepts help from Oakley. This book was so heartwarming and a wonderful read.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. These are my honest thoughts.
I absolutely adored Second Shift. With found family, second chances and forgiveness, it was easy to get lost in the pages. Silas and Oakley are that couple you cheer for, as they are meant to be.
Oakley is back in Steele Valley to heal after breaking her ankle. Silas built a wall around his heart when she left and now that she is back, that wall has shifted. The feelings these two shared never went away and now that Oakley is back, they build something stronger than before.
Loved the way these two communicated and the emotions they go through. They may have spent years apart but came back together whole.
This is a really good heartfelt story that hits right in the feels. Oakley and Silas are great characters that are well suited to each other. These two have a history which is evident in this. I really liked how their second chance played out. And the narrative is engaging from start to finish. So if you like sports romance, that's also a second chance romance, with a single parent, a protective hero, found family, grumpy/sunshine and slow burn, then grab a copy of this fantastic book.
Favorite line: "This is the family we built from the wreckage. And I'll burn the world to keep it safe."
Right off the bat, Silas steals your heart! Absolutely obsessed with this man! The heartbreak gets you immediately and the way you immediately feel for both of them! Ugh my poor babies! These two are honestly soul mates that had to drift apart only to reunite whole again. The amount of emotions and the depth of the writing was just absolutely captivating! I loved this book so much!
Thank you to the Author Agency for this beautiful ARC read opportunity!

This was such a beautiful story! I loveeeeeee second chance romances and this one truly delivered 💕 I love that they were kinda friends after their break up!! That was so refreshing! Their story felt so real! I love Aubrey so much she’s so cute and sassy!
Now the spice ❤️🔥 so good!
I enjoyed this book so much thanks again for this arc and happy release day 💞
This is a relatively, if not new author to me, and I am surprised I have not come across her books before.
This is hockey captain and Oakley’s second chance at love story. Well written you cannot help but be drawn into the story that the author wove set in Steele Valley.
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Second Shift. This was a different take on second chance romance and it was beautiful. The reconnection between the fmc and mmc was magical and the introduction of the guardian relationship was lovely. The dialogue was exceptional and the banter was cute and flirty. Definitely recommend.
