As a huge Jules Verne fan, I snapped this up and read it with eagerness. However, disappointment began on page one and worsened the further I read.
The premise had promise. A sequel to Verne’s The Mysterious Island, the novel follows four people who become castaways on an island. Bloodthirsty pirates inhabit another sector of the island, and yet an unseen benefactor helps the four survive.
But the book seems to have been written on the same island, thousands of miles from the nearest editor. Misspellings, odd capitalizations, missing quotation marks, odd phrasings, and incorrect homonyms litter the novel like flotsam. You’ll look in vain for a page without at least two editing errors.
The characters seemed a little stereotypical to me, and lack depth.
On the positive side, I like the map of the island (and the other drawing included at the end). The author put a lot of thought into what Verne’s Lincoln Island might look like after the volcanic eruption at the conclusion of The Mysterious Island. The book’s cover is also nice.
Overall, I cannot recommend the book. If a copy should fall into the hands of an editor or English teacher, stand clear—you might accidentally be in the path when they throw it at a wall.
