Pet Guinia Pigs Up Close by Brynn Baker is a fun, cute, and simple way to introduce a child to guineu pigs! It is an informational non-fiction book targeted for children Pre-K to 3rd grade (primary). The text provides children with interesting facts about pet guinea pigs. It has several illustrations, large headings, table of context, and glossary that are eye capturing and easy to use. The wording is hilarious, and really geared towards making children want to love this furry animal!
I paired this non-fiction book with a fiction book titled, "A Tale of Two Guinea Pigs" by Lisa Maddock. It is a beginning chapter book (primary) that children will love. The story begins with two guinea pigs, Teddy and Pip, who's owner has gone missing. The two guinea pigs have to solve the mystery of where she could be. The guinea pigs have big personalities, and are very hyper active. I paired this story with the non-fiction for many reasons. The first reason being that they are both about guinea pigs. The second reason is the connection that in the fictional story the owner has the guinea pigs as her pets. Students can make connections from the non-fiction, which tells of how to care of for a guinea pig, with connections to Teddy and Pip and how they are cared for. Students might also see connection on how Teddy and Pip act compared to what is described in the non-fiction book.
Great nonfiction book about guinea pigs. I learned that guinea pigs are also called cavies! The book gives you generic information about the guinea pig (eyes, nose, feet, body, etc.), but it doesn't really tell you how to take care of it as a pet. It has real photographs of guinea pigs though which are really cute and there's a glossary and a resource list at the end of the book. There's an index too!
