This was a beautifully written collection. I really enjoyed how distinct each story felt while still subtly pointing toward a shared theme. At some point, I genuinely wondered if different writers were behind them because the voices were that varied.
That said, I didn’t read every story. A few were written in second-person POV, and if you know me, that’s my biggest enemy. I just can’t get into that style at all, so I skipped those.
I don’t think I have a single favorite, but one story completely caught me off guard. “A Meal is a Meal” had me stunned. I actually paused because I did not see that twist coming at all. It was shocking in the best (and most unsettling) way.
I also really enjoyed “Forbidden Meat.” It was so absurd it became hilarious. If it’s based on a real place, then… my apologies, but the entire situation felt wildly ridiculous in a way that made it entertaining.
Overall, the writing across the collection was strong and engaging. I was lowkey hoping for recipes at the end of each story (except A Meal is a Meal, obviously), but oh well… I’ll let that go lol

Beautiful collection of stories and I must say the way food is the bone of contention and it blends with the storyline is absolutely beautiful. The strongest stories are definitely in front and it’s a nice collection of short stories that I’d always recommend.

It’s not a gothic collection, at least not in my opinion, and not particularly food themed like you’d imagine. But, it’s a lovely collection of stories which I enjoyed and found humorous.

“A Meal is a meal” no! Not all meals are meant to be eaten.
I was gagged at the end of most story. This is a well written piece.

A collection of 12 short stories that are gothic, weird and some downright funny.
The author made use of some cultural and spiritual superstitions surrounding food in the Africa for some of the stories in this collection. Some are just generally funny, like Battle for Akara where a prime and proper man beat up a street boy for cutting the line on a queue to get hot Akara on a morning in Lagos. Love Potion is my absolute favourite, I'm a big fannn of 2kd person POV in short stories, so when I started, I love the descriptions, the protagonists delulu and stupidity and then the story took a different turn tat I didn't expect at all!! I was shocked, I had to pause and re read for about 3 times. And then the story titled "A Meal IsA Meal", gory, scary and I almost threw the book, I mean it's gothic but pleaseeee!
I really love this collection and I've recommended it a few times🥹
