Come and Get Her by Bruce Conord is one of those rare novels that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. Conord’s storytelling is vivid, heartfelt, and laced with just the right balance of tension, humor, and humanity. The characters feel so real that you can’t help but become emotionally invested in their struggles and triumphs. The pacing is excellent — every chapter builds momentum, pulling you deeper into a world that feels authentic and alive. What impressed me most is how Conord manages to weave powerful themes of identity, resilience, and connection without ever losing the thread of an engaging, fast-moving story. It’s clear that this book was written with both passion and purpose. Whether you’re drawn to strong character development, beautiful prose, or a plot that keeps you turning pages late into the night, Come and Get Her delivers on every level. Highly recommended for readers who love novels that make them feel — and think — long after the last page.

My Thoughts: The drug cartel’s first mistake was kidnapping the daughter of Jesse Arroyo, a former Special Forces soldier. It’s the middle of the night, and his ex-girlfriend Debi is on the phone telling him their twenty-year-old daughter Sheri is missing. She and two friends crossed the Texas border to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to visit a night club. When leaving the night club they are kidnapped but one gets away and tells the police the details. A great read! Fast-paced and with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged throughout Thanks NetGalley, Shadowbook Press and Author Bruce Conord for the complimentary copy of "COME AND GET HER" I am leaving my voluntary review in appreciation. #NetGalley #ShadowbookPress #BruceConord #COMEANDGETHER ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The first-person story starts with a gripper. In fact, Jesse says it’s ‘the call that no parent should receive.’ It’s the middle of the night, and his ex-girlfriend Debi is on the phone telling him their twenty-year-old daughter Sheri is missing. She and two friends crossed the Texas border to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to visit a night club. Upon leaving, they were kidnapped, but one of the girls escaped and gave the police in Laredo, Texas, the sketchy details. The Laredo police and the FBI are upbeat about Sheri’s safety and confident of the cooperation of the Nuevo Laredo authorities. They are sure a ransom demand will come, and if the family pays it, which of course they will, Sheri will come home. Jesse is far less optimistic. Nuevo Laredo is wracked by drug cartel violence, and two blonde Americans are prime targets for trafficking. The Mexican police, too often in cahoots with the cartels, can’t be counted on. Sadly, he doesn’t trust Sheri’s grandfather to pay up, either. Unlike Don Winslow’s The Cartel and The Border, the book doesn’t tackle head-on the problems created by drugs, guns, and money sloshing back and forth across the US-Mexican border. Yet, there’s enough here to make the story feel all-too-real. That impression is aided by Conord’s portrayal of the intransigent attitudes and tactics of US immigration and border patrol personnel.
“Come and Get Her” is a propulsive thriller set in the bad borderlands of Texas and Mexico. The setup is brutal and efficient: a girls’ party trip to Nuevo Laredo goes sideways, and they’re snatched by one of the vilest drug cartels imaginable.
Enter the dad—no ordinary dad. Jesse Arroyo is an Afghanistan war vet, a former CIA operative, and an all-around ornery dude. He heads south to rescue his daughter, kick ass, and take names.
He doesn’t do it alone. He teams up with Liza, the editor of "La Voz," an online newspaper dedicated to exposing the cartel’s crimes—at a devastating cost. Her co-editor husband and son were brutally murdered. She’s done playing defense and wants payback.
There’s also a stray dog named Dog. He has no agenda beyond getting fed, but he proves useful in a pinch—and there are many, many pinches in this story.
Pick up this book if you want to be thrilled, or if you’d like to vicariously smash a truly awful bad guy. It delivers on both counts.
What a great introduction to Jesse Arroyo. The non-stop action as Jesse and Liza take on the Mexican narco terrorists was exciting and intensely descriptive. The ending was a setup for another Jesse story – which I would welcome! I received an ARC from NetGalley, and the opinions expressed are my own.
I really loved Come and Get Her by Bruce Conord. The story pulled me in from the beginning and made me care about the characters right away. I felt nervous and emotional as the tension slowly grew. I could not wait to see what would happen next. It was an engaging and moving read.
I have never read any of Bruce Conord books before but after reading Come and get her you better believe I will be reading more of his books I can't wait to read the next one!
A fast-paced story that has a man, Jessi, who is going after the men who have kidnapped his daughter. He has helped mainly with a woman who has lost her husband and son, with the people who have taken his daughter. There is a lot of action, and as the story unfolds, the past is revealed, explaining why he was not in his daughter's life. Overall, a good book.
