Steve Emecz has spent two decades working in technology, and much of his spare time in Sherlock Holmes publishing (MX Publishing). His own writing experience can best be described as eclectic (or erratic). It began with two novels (one a bestseller that almost became a screenplay) in the late 1990s. In more recent times he has moved to a role as editor including 'Sherlock's Home - The Empty House' which was translated into nine languages and 'The Happy Life Story' in 2015/2018, the story of the project in Kenya that Steve, his wife Sharon and MX support. He yearns for the time and peace and quiet that will enable him to go back to writing novels but that isn't going to happen any time soon - but that's ok too.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. It is fast-paced, light-hearted, warm and funny with just the right balance of action and character developement. In Max Jones, the author has created a highly enjoyable accidental hero/adventurer who is believable and unexpectedly loveable. He's a bit of an underdog - flawed, overweight, wrong side of forty but smart, loyal and pretty lucky when it comes to getting out of difficult situations. He's also brave and self-deprecating - you find yourself willing him on and can't resist turning the page to find out how he gets out of another impossible situation. A great antithesis of the usual dashing, fit young heros who are franky a bit boring. Just wish there was a third story to enjoy!
