The Mysterious Double Death of Honey Black: The Hotel Hollywood Mysteries, Book 1

Rate this book
It is 2019 and Lily Jones is living her dream in LA. Sort of. Instead of working as a movie producer, she is cleaning at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hotel. At least she gets to work in the renowned Paul Williams suite, site of the brutal murder of Honey Black 70 years ago, shrouded in rumour and dark glamour.

It is 1949 and Honey Black is about to hit the big time. She may have started out a country girl from Hicksville but now she is a star. And Hollywood had better watch out – nothing can stop her now!

After an accidental bump to the head, Lily finds herself in Hollywood, 1949. Like a dream come true, she is rubbing shoulders with the great and good of Tinseltown. Including Honey Black. Horrified, Lily realises that the actress has only two weeks left to live before she will be murdered.

Could this be why she has found herself in 1949? To find the killer and stop them in their tracks?

Audio Arc received from Bolinda Audio due to be published on 1st December 2025.

In 2019, Lily Jones is chasing her Hollywood dream in Los Angeles, though not exactly as she imagined. Far from producing films, she’s a cleaner at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. Her one perk? Tending to the legendary Paul Williams suite, infamous for the savage 1949 murder of Honey Black, a crime still steeped in scandal and shadowy allure.
One unsolved Hollywood killing…
A freak head injury catapults Lily into 1949 Hollywood. It’s surreal, she’s mingling with the era’s elite, including Honey Black herself. But dread sets in when Lily realizes Honey has just two weeks before her brutal murder.
Is this why she’s here? To unmask the killer and rewrite history?

I really enjoyed this easy going, cosy mystery, the characters were likeable, the writing really throws you back to the 1940s era and I loved the modern references (and bad language!) from Annie which completely threw the 1949 people.
The narration by Beth Lilly was excellent with superb accents (to my English ear)

With thanks to NetGalley and Bolinda audio for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

This audiobook book is about Lily, it's 2019 and she's living in LA. Her American dream is not quite going to plan. Lily wants to be a movie producer, instead she is working as a cleaner in the Beverly Hills Hotel. She gets to work in the Paul Williams suite, where the beautiful actress Honey Black was murdered in 1949, her murder was never solved and is shrouded in mystery. It's 1949 and Honey Black is about to make it to the big time, miles away from the small town she grew up in. After an accidental bump to the head Lily finds herself in 1949. Lily finds herself rubbing shoulders with the greats of Hollywood including Honey Black. Lily realises she only has two weeks to save Honey and get herself back to 2019.

I absolutely loved this audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job and the different character voices were brilliant. This is my first book by the author and it certainly will not be my last. I will be looking out for both the author and the narrator.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bolinda for the opportunity to listen to this fantastic book.

Audiobook.
Lily is a maid in a posh hotel in 2019, she’s in a suite cleaning it. She desperately wants to get into the movie scene. She’s just heard this was the suite that Honey Black died in, was stabbed and the perpetrator was never found.
While cleaning the bathroom, she slips and bangs her head. When she wakes up, she goes to leave the suite when two ladies come in. They are dressed in vintage costumes and Lily tries to get out, but she’s spotted. Having overheard their conversation, she agrees with the one lady who immediately hires her as her PA. It turns out that this is Lily Black and it’s 1949. Lily has to watch what she says, but here she is living the dream at the filming of what is billed as the next blockbuster.
She quickly realises she can make a difference - but what effect will that have? Can she find out who kills Honey? Or can she prevent it? What kind of butterfly effect will that have.
Well narrated. I loved it.
