The Flourishing Tree is a nonfiction book that invites readers to explore biblical stories of trees and the people who interact with them -- and also learn from the Holy One who died on a tree to save us all. Understanding the blessings of these trees' stories can point the way to our own enriched faith.
Hope Squires published her first book The Flourishing Tree in November 2014, just before packing up her home in North Carolina to move across the country to Northern California, where she lives with her husband and very energetic dog.
Hope discovered the love of book writing when she was six years old. She wrote a children's story, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and masking tape binding. The Snowy Day came to life as she took a break from playing in the snow one winter day. Hot chocolate, snow clothes drying by the fire, scrap paper and pencil in hand (she was still too young for pen).
She was hooked and has loved writing ever since.
She got her first typewriter when she was eight years old, and the first article she typed on it was a story about the Mount St. Helens eruption. She has no idea what happened to that article, but it’s probably tucked away at her parents' house in a closet somewhere with that old blue typewriter.
Now she's making a career of writing. You won’t usually find her hunched over a laptop at a coffee shop. She still loves pen and paper and prefers to write that way first and then turn to the computer for edits. But for the sake of efficiency, she finds herself writing more and more on her computer at home. At least she has a great view of trees from the window!
This is a book on the Christian journey presented in a refreshing way. The word pictures created by using nature, and trees specifically, helped me experience long known ideas in a new and different way. This would be a great book for a small group discussion or used as an individual devotional.
