The Fair Way: The True Story of a Landmark Case for Equality

Rate this book
Love. Justice. A Landmark Court Battle.

The Fair Way is the gripping true story of Birgit Koebke and Kendall French—two women who refused to be sidelined by discrimination. When their country club denied Kendall the same rights given to other spouses, they didn’t walk away quietly. They fought back.

What began as a simple plea for fairness became a decade-long legal struggle that would reach the California Supreme Court and change civil rights law forever.

More than a memoir, The Fair Way is a story of love, resilience, and the power of standing up—no matter the odds.

This was a quick read, and if ever there was a story of determination and resolve, this was it. It was infuriating and inspiring in equal measure. B and Kendall demonstrated nothing but bravery as they helped change civil rights law.

The Fair Way: The True Story of a Landmark Case for Equality is a compelling and impactful short read that delivers far more than just historical facts. It’s informative, sharply reasoned, and engages your logical brain while exposing the quiet, everyday social injustices that too often go unchallenged.

What makes this book especially powerful is how clearly it illustrates that staying silent is not a neutral act, it’s a form of participation. The story shines a light on how easily people are willing to look the other way when speaking up feels inconvenient or uncomfortable, and how that collective silence allows injustice to persist.

The authors’ perseverance is inspiring. They refused to give up, even when it would have been easier to walk away, and their courage helped pave the way for meaningful change and equality for many others who followed. This book is a reminder of the impact determined individuals can have and why speaking up matters.

Highly recommended for anyone who values fairness, accountability, and justice.

The Fair Way is a masterclass in the power of principled persistence. B. Birgit Koebke and Kendall French have delivered a memoir that is as legally significant as it is deeply personal, transforming a "quiet" fight for country club benefits into a landmark victory for civil rights.
